Could anyone recommend a decent pub near the venue for after show drinkies ?

A friend went to see Ray Davies at the Symphony Hall and found that most of the pubs nearby had discos on when they came out from the gig.
Going to see Steve Harley later in the month, too, meeting with friends at the Brasshouse, but again need somewhere for afterwards.

Walk back  for five minutes towards the City Centre to Bennetts Hill (just past the Council building) and choose from the 14 handpumps at the Wellington. http://www.thewellingtonrealale.co.uk/pages/beerboard.php.

Also walk a little down New Street, on the left next to sandwich bar Eat is a door to the Post office Vaults, six real ales, good pump ciders, and over 150 bottled beers from around the world, plus free bar billiards.

Sorry to correct, David, but on the right going down New St from the Council building. Owned by the same man who runs the Welly.

But as you look at Eat it is on the left - I think thats what I meant anyway  ;)

So, who's going to Peggy's bash?

I can confirm that.  Lovely pub, with great range of beer ;)

I'll be there. I was in Brum today on business. Not a city I know well. I have no idea where anything is, including the venue.  ::)

You'll be fine, Al. There are pedestrian fingerposts on every corner in the centre. If in doubt, navigate on the nearly finished new Central Library, a huge yellow  building at the top of town, with curly ironwork on the outside. Symphony Hall is next door on the left.

The gig is in the Town Hall, not the Symphony Hall. It is a 10 minute rush on foot from one to the other.

That's weird! I swear I posted on this thread this morning but it has disappeared.

Anyway, I will be walking from the Premier Inn in Waterloo Street (?) which I am hoping isn't too far away. It seems to be in the vicinity of the Wellington at least.  :)

Last August (post-Crops) I got lost on my way to the airport in Brum, driving on the wrong side of the M5 (as you folks do), in the pouring rain.

Still, I wish I could come back for Peggy's party.  :(

Very convenient for the Town Hall: Looking down Waterloo Street from outside the front door of the Premier Inn, you can actually see the Town Hall. A five minute stroll at the most leisurely of paces. And yes, the Wellington is just around the corner.  :)

thats great news .. In the Wellington then (I will be the one in a Fairport Convention T shirt !!!!!)

The Wellington will be extremely busy being a Friday and it's small size. It's also become a bit expensive of late. The Briar Rose, a decent Wetherspoons is only a few doors down from it and they also have the National beer festival on so plenty of choice for a pound a pint cheaper.

Again I suggest post office vaults - stills bit of a secret.

And (thanks to FC's FB feed for reminding me) a Very Happy Birthday to the old boy.  Hope tonight is a great gig.

Surprised that nobody has commented on this.

It was good natured and slightly shambolic. No real surprises but capped by a decent Fairport set (with Simon singing the best I have heard for some while). Peggy was clearly having a whale of a time (and admitted to being refreshed) so that was the main thing. And as Simon Nicol said, Peggy could have chosen to be anywhere on his birthday but he chose to be at Birmingham Town Hall and invited us all along.

Not sure if anyone met up before or after but a definitive pub selection never seemed to have been made. In the end my fragile stomach was misbehaving a bit so I thought it best to avoid the beer. Hope everyone had a good time.

A great evening, perfectly summed up by Al. Highlight for me was probably the storming version of "Like a Rolling Stone" performed by the entire cast.

Great to meet up with Addie, Martin and Adrian. If the pub hadn't shut at 1:30, I think we would probably still be there!

In a way, Swarb not playing is a surprise.

I know what you mean but the emphasis here seemed to be very much on Peggy's current activities so it was Peggy & PJ, Peggy & Anthony John Clarke, The Dylan Project and the current Fairports.

Was curious about how this was as well and now I know it wasnt like the 60th with Ian Campbell, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Dan Ar Braz, etc, etc. Thanks for the report and glad it was a good evening....and a good post evening for some of you  ;)

Forgot to mention, amongst the many people Martin introduced us to was Rui ( as in Rui's guitar )What a perfect gent!

I was soo pleased that Steve Gibbons and co were there a brill set and as you say Rolling Stone was enthusiastic
I loved the strawchestra .. All that time learning hte Bassooon which i still can't play and hte straw was there instead ..damm
Many more years i hope David .. Alwasy loved his music and look forward to a lot more  [;-) {:-)
