Title: Re: Fairport on Mark Radcliffe Post by: KascadeDan on January 24, 2013, 12:55:34 AM The lads sounded really good. They always seem to be in really good form around this time of year.
Title: Re: Fairport on Mark Radcliffe Post by: hendo (Dave) on January 24, 2013, 07:20:56 AM More importantly, what do Fairport get up to on the programme? Worth a listen? they were their usual affable selves and if you need to hear them do Spens, , walk awhile and ledge again then its required listening Pleasant listen. Enjoyed Spens and the other 2 are special songs, especially MOTL which I am sure most of us have heard an awful lot. I would be interested in a new listener to the programme/ folk music reaction to them. i thought Radcliffe talked/spluttered too much through the interview but Peggy was able to say Cropredy is not a folk fest so if you don't like the line up go to the bar or do something else......which seems fair enough. Obvious plugs for Cropredy and the tour, which is why they were there, so again fair enough. Nice plug for FakeThackray. Nothing to do with Fairports but cos it's live Radcliffe does seem to be turning it in to a request show. ' for Nick and Debbie who are having consexual sex in Burnley, here's Bob Fox.' We were supposed to be away next month. We're not and I'm wrestling whether to go and see FC at De Mont. I do want new stuff. I do want to be surprised. I know I'm not going to get it. Pleasant. Imust get a copy of Jim Moray;s Skulk and i loved the Simon Emmerson stuff. Title: Re: Fairport on Mark Radcliffe Post by: YaBB Master (Colin) on January 24, 2013, 08:50:45 AM I think we got a mention just before 'Sir Patrick'.
The 'lively' discussions about the Cropredy lineup were alluded to, "Talkawhile indeed". Title: Re: Fairport on Mark Radcliffe Post by: Alan2 on January 24, 2013, 09:17:49 AM I was s urprised at how good Fpt sounded. On the one hand they ough t to, after all these years of practice, on the other, we've all heard enough vintage bands sounding tired and lacklustre to know how disappointing they can be.
I left the FM steam radio on for Janice Long afterwards, and was agreeably surpsised by a track by the band : I am Kloot. There's so much music out there, new and not so, that it's easy to ignore it- then something like that pops up. Title: Re: Fairport on Mark Radcliffe Post by: GubGub (Al) on January 24, 2013, 10:44:48 AM I do want new stuff. I do want to be surprised. I know I'm not going to get it. I suspect that this is the wrong year to hope for new stuff. I think this is likely to be one of the band's quiet years after a busy "anniversary" year last year. It is only two years since Festival Bell. I reckon we are at least a year away from another one though I guess they may start debuting a couple of new songs on the tour. Title: Re: Fairport on Mark Radcliffe Post by: Jono on January 24, 2013, 11:22:03 AM Walkawhile got played on the Chris Evans breakfast show this morning (09:21) ... that's some premium airplay that is. Well done boys. :)
Made my drive through the ice and snow much more enjoyable :) Title: Re: Fairport on Mark Radcliffe Post by: Tasha on January 24, 2013, 03:05:30 PM If you just want to hear fairport go to the BBC music showcase pagehttp://www.bbc.co.uk/music/showcase/clips/p0145tg9/in/justadded/justadded where you can hear the 3 tracks. There is also an archive session there recorded live in session at the BBC on 18th March 1969.
Tracklisting: - Autopsy - Cajun Woman - Percy's Song - Si Tu Dois Partir Title: Re: Fairport on Mark Radcliffe Post by: David W on January 24, 2013, 04:08:51 PM I enjoyed their set but - and it may just be me - the music seemed a little hurried, especially Patrick Spens, it felt a tad rushed.
Still, good to hear them sounding on decent form, albeit without a leccy ... I can only agree, sometimes even TAW is positive and receptive. I listened, enjoyed Sir Pat, mentally danced to WalkAWhile (the first Fairport track I ever heard) and thought MoTL should be saved for Crops (a personal foible), but was ok. Title: Re: Fairport on Mark Radcliffe Post by: Shane (Skirky) on January 25, 2013, 10:54:49 AM I used the feature on the BBC iPlayer which allowed me to listen to just the FC music bits. I thought it was very sprightly - there's no new album to plug and so I thought the choice of a folk track, a hit and an anthem to play on the country's biggest radio station was, not necessarily inspired, but certainly pragmatic. Having CL in the band does rather feel to me like there's an insider in terms of fandom when it comes to suggesting the set list (I did catch a brief comment by them regarding being surprised by a couple of the most popular suggestions for By Popular Request, which indicates that they might not be quite as certain of what their hardcore audience wants as they might like to think they are) but that the three songs they played all had the hallmark of RT imprinted firmly upon them just goes to show what a very long shadow he's cast over the years.
Title: Re: Fairport on Mark Radcliffe Post by: Sir Martin on January 27, 2013, 02:38:37 PM Listened to this on iPlayer this morning. not bad, but it would have been great to hear the band talk more.

Title: Re: Fairport on Mark Radcliffe Post by: gower flower (Shirl) on January 28, 2013, 01:24:22 PM I completely forget to tune in to Mark Radcliffe last week, and having lost the sound facility on my computer, I am unable to listen again on i player. Bah! The good news is that my trusty IT person Nick is on his way to sort the thing out very soon. Hurrah! :D
