Title: Never seen this pic before
Post by: Jules Gray on February 06, 2014, 10:38:29 AM
I imagine others have seen this, but it was new to me.  A very young Richard Thompson and Hugh Cornwell in their teen beat combo Emil And The Detectives:-

Yes, I was wondering why the name of the drums didn't match up.  Thanks for that, Darren.  Was that another name they went under then?

No idea Jules, I've only ever heard of Emil and The Detectives.

I found the web page you got this from -  nice little story from Hugh Cornwell about meeting up with RT in 2008 after 30 years. There's also a great pic of some scouse band. Being for the benefit of others reading this thread:

That one of Lemmy is scary, they look like they had been made up and posed by an undertaker

Brilliant pics - and all the better for not being photoshopped  :)

apparently they never had a permanent name, changing from week to week.

Quote from RT "The drummer in the band was the son of the jazz critic of Melody Maker, so we would get to hear all of the Melody Maker demos, singles and promotional copies that would come through. We used to sift through that stuff to find interesting material, so we were slightly less orthodox than some of the bands in North London in those days. We used to do a bit of Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. Some of the songs I remember doing included “Man With Money” by the Everly Brothers, “Jack O’Diamonds” by Ben Carruthers and Bob Dylan, “Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing” by Kiki Dee, and “Parchman Farm” by Mose Allison.

I don’t think we ever had a real name. We had a new one every week. Emil and the Detectives might have been the name for one of those weeks. For 16 years old, I think I played pretty well. I was still developing. I probably had the beginnings of my sound. Two years later, I was a much more complete musician. At 16, I was still really just copying people like Pete Townsend, some of the blues guitarists like Otis Rush, and traditional acoustic players like Davey Graham. I also grew up listening to Django Reinhardt and Les Paul via my dad’s record collection. Those were other underlying influences that informed how I play."

Isn't that the basic policy Ashley was operating on as well-Doctor K's Blues Band, Ethnic Shuffle Orchestra, etc? Gearing the name towards different audiences week by week.

Perhaps they should co-write a song called  'Who knows whatever happened to all the times where the heroes go?'

Or maybe not.
