Title: Fairport knowledge required Post by: YaBB Master (Colin) on April 23, 2014, 11:32:03 PM Fairport Towers (Simon) have asked if we can help.
Someone who has been described as an obsessive Fairport fan has died and his brother in law (Chris) is trying to sort out the masses of CDs, albums, t-shirts, programmes, etc. However he has no idea what's what. I have explained that most of it is probably clutter, but he wants anything that would be treasured by somebody else to find a good home. All of this stuff is in Garsington, near Oxford, but only until next Wednesday. It might be all a complete set of re-issued CDs, or just maybe early, mint, first pressings. I have no idea. As a first step is there anybody in the area who could go and use their Fairport knowledge to sort through it. Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: Jim on April 23, 2014, 11:38:29 PM Where are you going to find a FC fan in oxfordcesterceshire?
Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: MikeB (Mike) on April 24, 2014, 12:55:22 AM I have a colleague who lives in Garsington. Maybe I could ask her if she could drop in and take some photos of it? Then maybe people here could have a look. Otherwise, I could try and get out there to have a look myself but I'm pretty pushed for time over the next week so not sure if I'd be able to make it before Wednesday.
Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: YaBB Master (Colin) on April 24, 2014, 08:55:15 AM Thanks Mike.
I think we'll make a call at the end of the day. More than one person might be a good idea. On this time scale I think we need to just make a box of the best and sort it out later. Maybe a group effort. Chris (the brother in law) is far more worried about throwing out something that could find a loving home, than anythings value. I would suggest if we identify anything really rare, we advise the family to hang on to it and trade it themselves. (eg a mint+, first pressing of 'Sandy', 'AT2/The Boot' CD box) Things that have some value we list, people here could grab and make a donation to TCT. (Distributed at Cropredy or something.) (Old t-shirts, complete sets of programs, less than mint LPs, etc.) Things of personal interest, but no real value, or too tedious to list. Anybody helping can have. (eg the 1986 Cropredy programme that's missing from your set.) So please we will need a few volunteers to do this: Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: jude on April 24, 2014, 09:01:18 AM I could probably get there if that would help?
Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: YaBB Master (Colin) on April 24, 2014, 09:19:22 AM I could probably get there if that would help? I think Jude, somebody with a camera and somebody you can be fairly ruthless would be a great combination. (Somebody would also have to store this stuff while we list it.) Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: tony the roundhead on April 24, 2014, 10:34:45 AM I'm close. Free Sunday/Monday/Tuesday evening. Could pick Jude up on way.
Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: Jules Gray on April 24, 2014, 10:44:30 AM Could pick Jude up on way. Steady, Tiger! ;D Jules Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: Chris on April 24, 2014, 10:48:10 AM I've got some time free this weekend & am, in Oxford anyway (Folk Weekend tickets)
Also have a camera....but I'm pretty sure I know most of what'll rare....if he was an obsessive (and it will be a 'he'!) it's likely that there will be a lot of rare stuff. Willing to go. Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: YaBB Master (Colin) on April 24, 2014, 11:00:38 AM Great ;D
I think Tony, Jude and Chris would be a great team. I'll PM you all later, with Chris (brother in law)'s contact information and see if you can organise a convenient time. And everybody else keep watching, because there will be more to do and I'd like to spread it out as a little each. Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: Dad Volt on April 24, 2014, 11:01:28 AM Pretty much sounds like a Talkawhile dream team!
Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: hendo (Dave) on April 24, 2014, 11:56:47 AM Great ;D I think Tony, Jude and Chris would be a great team. And everybody else keep watching, because there will be more to do and I'd like to spread it out as a little each. There's a TV prog in this. If Jude and Chris could arrive in classic cars, ideally wearing scarves and tweed , Tony arrives as a roundhead and then they try and sell fc memorabilia at an auction!!! Now all it needs is a title......... answers on a post card please. Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: bassline (Mike) on April 24, 2014, 12:48:06 PM Fairport Fanauction - The Reel Deal?
Edit: And Bassline is awarded three thwacks on the skull with an inflated pig's bladder. Colin Edit: And now back on topic please. Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: jude on April 25, 2014, 09:11:03 AM Ummm should we be a little careful with what is written here ?, as I believe the people see this thread and it is the funeral of the gentleman today, I understand?

I hadn't read the first 2 posts and my response was flippant and thoughtless. I can only apologise. David Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: jude on July 23, 2014, 03:59:39 PM Update:
All the memorabilia and CDs have now been collected by the Friends of Fairport and will be for sale on the FOF stall at Cropredy (top of the stage field). All money raised by the sale of these items will be given to the Teenage Cancer Trust. The family of the late owner of this collection are extremely happy with this solution to their dilemma of how to make sure it went to people who understand what it is to be a Fairport fan and I hope people will be happy to buy it and raise money for a good cause.. ;D Jude :) Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: Will S on July 23, 2014, 04:46:01 PM Sounds like a great solution to the problem!
Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: Paul on July 23, 2014, 10:02:01 PM Any chance of getting one of the Teenage Cancer Trust patrons there?
Preferably not the one who is duchess of York. ;) ;D Paul Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: jude on July 23, 2014, 10:30:58 PM Any chance of getting one of the Teenage Cancer Trust patrons there? Is possible I suppose.. :) Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: Polly Oxford (Andie) on August 03, 2014, 09:49:51 PM Too late to buy them a ticket now. ... ;D
Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: Chris on August 04, 2014, 11:07:44 AM As the CDs aren't being sold at the festival, but afterwards, there wouldn't/won't be any presentation....
Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: jude on August 04, 2014, 01:17:55 PM As the CDs aren't being sold at the festival, but afterwards, there wouldn't/won't be any presentation.... The CDs and memorabilia from David Taylor's estate are being sold at the festival, they will be on sale on the Friends of Fairport stall at the top of the field.. That's the plan.. All money raised from the sale will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust. But I don't think there will be a presentation. At least I don't know of one ::) Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: Chris on August 04, 2014, 01:36:55 PM fyi, Jude - Ian Burgess emailed yesterday to say the CDs wouldn't be at the festival - but he'll have a list with him & they'd be sold afterwards....
Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: jude on August 04, 2014, 01:38:06 PM fyi, Jude - Ian Burgess emailed yesterday to say the CDs wouldn't be at the festival - but he'll have a list with him & they'd be sold afterwards.... I wasn't aware of that... :-\ Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: Chris on August 04, 2014, 01:42:25 PM I guess the stall space isn't sufficient to display all the CDs....but I'm sure there'll be signage & he'll make the list available.
The books & programmes will all be there. First come, first served folks! Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: tony the roundhead on August 04, 2014, 03:08:06 PM That's a shame.
Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: jude on August 04, 2014, 03:32:34 PM That's a shame. Yes it kind of defeats the object of having everything sold to people at the festival. I will ask Ian about it Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: Chris on August 04, 2014, 04:06:57 PM He'll be in Banbury by now for the warm-ups, I suspect having left the CDs at home.
Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: RevRed on August 04, 2014, 08:51:13 PM Hi,
I can understand that the memorabilia, etc., may complicate selling the normal stuff at the stall, but it's a shame it wouldn't be available to festival goers. Would a list be available during the festival? RevRed. Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: jude on August 04, 2014, 08:59:15 PM Hi, I can understand that the memorabilia, etc., may complicate selling the normal stuff at the stall, but it's a shame it wouldn't be available to festival goers. Would a list be available during the festival? RevRed. I understand the memorabilia will be for sale on the Friends of Fairport stall but the Cds won't, but there will be a list. Which is a shame because then they will require postage and jiffy bags and all that, whereas they could simply have been sold as seen. I really don't understand the thinking behind it, the point was for it all to be sold at the festival. Well.... Title: Re: Fairport knowledge required Post by: Chris on August 05, 2014, 08:51:15 AM I have an explanation from Ian -
The official record stall on the field has exclusive rights to sell CDs. Ian has held long discussions with them over this, and while they might well have given Ian one-off permission, there was concern that it would still set a precedent. The Record Stall is the second most expensive concession on the field. The CDs also take up 6 racks, and finding sufficient space on the stall to allow proper browsing wasn't going to be easy. There will be a readily available list to browse instead, along with the books and programmes. Ian felt this was the best overall solution.
