Title: Best RT guitar example? Post by: samnitzberg (Sam) on July 07, 2014, 05:26:20 PM OK, a guy I know, a rock-n-roll guitar player, has never heard of Richard Thompson. I want to either show him a YouTube video or play him one or two songs, to back up my claim that there's no one else who plays like him and there's a reason why he's always on the various Best Guitarists Ever lists. Suggestions?

Title: Re: Best RT guitar example? Post by: Dan O. on July 07, 2014, 07:01:18 PM Play him "Shoot Out The Lights" (title track, of course) for its truly unique Stratocaster mangling, followed by "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" for acoustic finger pickin' balladry. These textbook examples should encourage him to investigate further...

best to all p. Title: Re: Best RT guitar example? Post by: Chris from Fieldtown on July 09, 2014, 08:43:28 PM Thinking about this question I overlooked this song when thinking through perhaps more obvious titles. But what a powerful performance. Courageous song-writing and intriguing and dramatic guitar playing. Probably needs a Vincent or SOTL to seal the deal but great suggestion.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lX9iavUiLY4 That French INA video of FC doing Reno, Nevada displays a young Richard playing as if a man possessed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5IUHjLpf3A Title: Re: Best RT guitar example? Night Comes In.......the best version I ever experienced, though, was circa 1996 at Cropredy. Unbelievable. Title: Re: Best RT guitar example? Post by: KascadeDan on July 10, 2014, 07:53:44 AM "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" for acoustic finger pickin' balladry. That's usually my first choice. Title: Re: Best RT guitar example? Post by: Shankly (Peter) on July 10, 2014, 08:04:34 AM There are some pretty good live versions of 'Can't win' on youtube - I think there's one from Bristol a few years ago that I would recommend. I can't check youtube in work, but I'm sure it'll come up in a search.
Title: Re: Best RT guitar example? Post by: DarrenWilliams on July 10, 2014, 09:20:14 AM I'd second Can't Win (live versions). Also Calvary Cross and Night Comes In from Guitar, Vocal (and subsequently re-released on the 1975 live album)
Title: Re: Best RT guitar example? Post by: davidmjs on July 10, 2014, 09:22:05 AM Also Calvary Cross and Night Comes In from Guitar, Vocal Hear hear. If they don't get you, then nothing will... Title: Re: Best RT guitar example? Post by: Jules Gray on July 10, 2014, 09:44:28 AM The live version of Hokey Pokey from the R&L In Concert November 1975 CD. Richard plays the living bejaysus out of his guitar.
Jules Title: Re: Best RT guitar example? Post by: GubGub (Al) on July 10, 2014, 03:27:36 PM Calvary Cross
Night Comes In Can't Win All good choices but if you are trying to convince a rock n roll guitarist than I guess you need to go for something uptempo. Live versions of Valerie, Little Blue Number or Read About Love would be my suggestions. Title: Re: Best RT guitar example? Post by: samnitzberg (Sam) on July 10, 2014, 07:09:29 PM Great suggestions, guys, keep 'em coming. What I think I'm going to do is make him a CD, a "Best Of RT's Guitar" or something. Terrific as his songwriting is, this needs to concentrate on the playing. I need 70 minutes or so. The one of the two from Guitar/Vocal suggested here so far is a definite, maybe the other if there's room. Probably a few from "More Guitar," too. Many of the others suggested sound like they'd be right (Shoot Out The Lights, Vincent, and I need to go back and listen to that Hokey Pokey version). What else?
Title: Re: Best RT guitar example? Post by: RobertD on July 10, 2014, 08:22:25 PM Couple of others that spring to mind and that I enjoy the guitar work on especially are Haul Me Up, Hand Of Kindness, Mother Knows Best and Put It There Pal
Title: Re: Best RT guitar example? Post by: samnitzberg (Sam) on July 13, 2014, 07:14:56 PM OK, made the CD. Very hard to trim all that I chose to just 80 minutes (and even then had to edit away silence at the beginnings and ends of some of them in order to make it fit), combined with what I owned on CD -- I just couldn't go down the digitize-from-my-LPs route. Here's what made it, in case anyone has the need to repeat this:
Shoot Out The Lights (SOTL) 1952 Vincent Black Lightning (Rumor & Sigh) Can't Win (Live) (More Guitar) Dimming Of The Day (PDLS) Easy There, Steady Now (Mirror Blue) Tear-Stained Letter (Live version from Watching The Dark) Sloth (Full House) When The Spell Is Broken (Live) (More Guitar) Mystery Wind (Rumor & Sigh) Le Forze d'Hercole / Lo Ballo Dell'intorcia (The Bones Of All Men) Mingus Eyes (Mirror Blue) Calvary Cross (Live) (In Concert, November 1975) Title: Re: Best RT guitar example? Title: Re: Best RT guitar example? Post by: Jim on August 14, 2014, 04:26:10 PM Night Comes In from the Guitar / Vocal Lp. What he said, it convinced me 40+ years ago. It and Calvary Cross I had always loved Henry the human fly and his FC records but it was Pour down like silver that really did it for me and then in fairly shory order Guitar,Vocal came out and proved that he had taken it above and beyond Title: Re: Best RT guitar example? Post by: Rory. on August 15, 2014, 11:21:39 AM Beeswing is another - it's a beautiful example of RT's composition skills - I like a blistering solo as much as the next man, but I really love a good harmonic accompaniment.
His voice too - he's a great singer, I don't mean he has a huge range or masses of power, but he delivers the song perfectly, with all the emotion you'll ever need. (+ pretty much anything from Strict Tempo on the geetar front would do) Title: Re: Best RT guitar example? Post by: davidmjs on August 15, 2014, 08:36:34 PM Does Richard ever still play NCI? I'm trying to work out the last time I heard him play it (I suspect it was at Cropredy)...
