Yes, I was looking to see if Celtic Cousins was on sale @ amazon yet, and I saw the single. And yes, it's puzzling that there seems to be no mention of it on the RMcT website.

I'm disappointed I won't be seeing the man liv e this year, which means I have to get the 4th of the 6 strings series by mail, and pay a large postal charge. I guess there's a reason for this.  ???

'The Unknown Soldier' is a four-song EP with two new songs - the title track and 'Canopus' - and new recordings of 'Maginot Waltz' and 'England 1914' (re-named 'The Lamplighter (England 1914 June 28th)' to set the song precisely on the day the Archduke Ferdinand was killed). The EP is numbered TPGCD 11-11-11 and will be released on 10 November (to arrive on your doormat on the 11th).

Alan, 'Celtic Cousins' was issued to complement the tour and the few remaining copies are in Ralph's webshop.

It seems Amazon jumped the gun and announced the release of 'Unknown Soldier' ahead of the embargo date, somewhat spoiling Leola's intention to be the first with the news.

Still, as Tryer says, it got our attention!

An email today from Leola....

Leola Music is proud to announce the release of a new EP from Ralph McTell
“The Unknown Soldier."

It will be officially released on the 10th of November the day before Armistice Day to coincide with Britain's most poignant national day of mourning for the sacrifice of all those who perished in two World Wars.

Making a personal tribute has been one of Ralph's ambitions and hints of his strong emotional ties to the WW1 conflict have appeared on his recordings going back more than forty years with songs England 1914 and later with The Maginot Waltz.

Both of these titles are included on this CD as brand new recordings with arrangements by the legendary Graham Preskett.
The EP also features Canopus which Ralph debuted on his last national and international tours.
The title track The Unknown Soldier completes the 4 song EP.

The CD features notes and stories about the project that manages over the passage of four classic songs to portray a vision of lost innocence and deep reverence for those who gave everything in the war to end wars.

The Unknown Soldier is available to pre order and for a limited time includes free UK delivery.

I received my CD today 'The Unknown Soldier' almost to the hour at just gone 11 on the 11th day of the 11 month.....

The artwork is so fitting, the disc is a replica of what was known at the 'Widow's Penny' issued in 1918 to the family of every service man or woman killed....

Ralph's moving song 'The Unknown Soldier' beautifully and sensitively written, together with The Lamplighter, Maginot Waltz and Canopus, this album so aptly forms part of the WW1 commemoration, together with a delightful photo of Ralph's Grandfather and family in 1916 before he left for France......

I hate to be the one complaining but the single has some serious distortion.Mastered too loud? You don't need to be an audiophile to hear this. I even heard it when Mark R. played a track on th e folk show.

Looking @ the website from your link, John. I notice 'Unknown Soldier has been re-pressed. Has the mastering error (I believe there  to be one, I may have mentioned it elsewhere) been corrected?

Edit: Moved from 'Tour' thread

Now got #2 to compare. The recording level is lower than on #1, which clipped a bit. I thought it was dust on my old hi-fi contacts, but maybe not...

Ah, that's good. As I said, the first version was so obviously over-recorded I could hear the distortion when it was played on the radio.

Is it me? Having bought the latest pressing of Unknown Soldier, purely to get a preview of the Drury lane video, I have yet to see anything. I have had others attempt to achieve the playing of the dvd. All to no avail please don't reply with over techie jargon [Thanks] I just think if I buy something to relax with, I should not be expected to go to untold lengths to do just that? Fit for purpose?

What are you trying to play the DVD part on? A DVD player, computer (laptop/desktop) or something else?

Thank you Chris, as it said on site? I am playing [or attempting to play] on Computer

Try(er) this then... with the CD in the computer CD drawer, open My Computer and right click on the CD drive icon and select Open. The CD-Extra file name will be displayed. Double click it. The video will play in your default media player. Maybe  ::).

Try playing in a DVD player....?

Those machines are designed to find & play the video files

I wish I hadn't started this? [thanks for suggestions] I have indeed tried Dvd player! seriously thinking of returning my copy? as I feel it may be at fault?

If it won't play in a DVD player, I would return it & say that it is faulty

I'd have said the DVD player was the least likely means of playing it.

Are you saying that in a PC drive looking at it through My Computer (or equivalent) you can see and select the file concerned and yet not play it?  What's the error message?

I have confirmation from Leola that the Drury Lane footage is "intentionally a hidden bonus on the CD, perhaps a little too well hidden", and will play only on a computer. It plays best if you copy the file to your hard drive.
