Title: Introducing Sandy Denny.
Post by: Glen S on July 15, 2016, 07:06:25 PM
Having just spent a lovely couple of hours listening to various Sandy Denny albums, I had the idea of a mini sampler of tracks for a friend, as a kind of potted introduction to Sandy.

But if you had just 20 minutes (5 tracks?) of recording space at your disposal ?...Which songs would you choose to put on the tape to inspire your friend to search out Sandys catalogue further ?...Solo or band collaborations...It doesn't matter...  :)

Apologies if something similar to this has been done before... :-[

This may be quite a bit over 20 mins, but Hey Ho !...I know !...It's impossible... :-\

1/ Late November.
2/ John The Gun.
3/ Next Time Around.
4/ It Suits Me Well.
5/ The North Star Grassman And The Ravens.

Got to have Who Knows Where The Time Goes in there.  The Pond & The Stream from the Fotheringay period maybe.  Late November?  Sweet Rosemary?  It'll Take A Long Time?  Ah God, I dunno.  5 random tracks?   ;)

Solo, Fotheringay, WKWTTG, Sailors Life, Rising for the Moon.
....or a completely different 5.... 😇

Two of my favourite performances by Sandy were songs that she had no hand in composing.

'Ballad of Easy Rider' and best of all 'I'll Keep It With Mine'.

Good calls, both...my five today would be those two, Solo, Sailor's Life and Late November.  I don't really enjoy WKWTTG any more.  Heard too many poor cover versions....and if I'm honest, I think it's one of the few performances where I think Sandy 'oversings'.  I have no idea if this is even a thing, but it makes sense to me...

I have a problem with Sailor's Life as first intro to Sandy. I love it now but on first hearing it might be a bit off putting (almost too pure folky, duck for cover). I certainly would not include that just yet. Ease them in with other balards.
I am very interested in this tread as I also want to get people into Sandy. I will consider all suggestions.

Taking the above points in mind,
immediate top-of-the-head quickie response:

Who Knows... (just because)
White Dress
Tam Lin
North Star Grassmen ...
The Sea

Now ask me again in half an hour...

Agreed on all points... :)

I think the opening track on Sandy,  'It'll take a Long Long Time' is mainstream enough to grab a lot of people straight away, but after that I find it difficult. Sandy's lyric writing was indiosyncratic, and her melodies aren't always predictable either. 'It Suits Me Well' would be a must. A fine song- - tells a story, mid tempo, great singing. If you want Fpt stuff included, there's just so much choice.

I do wonder if we're listening to the same track?  It's a feckin' all out psych-folk freakout!  Well, it is in my head any day....

These are two of the main reasons that I, and many others love her writing.

Oh sure, me too. I think it would also be the things which might initially scare people off.  8)

20 minutes!?

Depends on the audience, but if its someone like me who's happy with longer stuff then

I'll Keep it with Mine

One More Chance

Reserves if I'm allowed 5 tracks instead are

Dawn, John the Gun, and No End for sure.  After that, it gets really hard to pick just two more.

Wot, no "Battle Of Evermore"?

Imho only, that's an incredibly minor piece in her canon of work.

The bloke doing backing vocals might put some people off.   ;)

The first Sandy Denny song I remember hearing is "The Sea" from the first Fotheringay album, so it resonates with me.

Others: "Listen, Listen", "It Suits Me Well", "Percy's Song" and WKWTTG. The last being a thing of beauty and sadness.

That's today. Tomorrow, or even this afternoon, they may all be banished by other favourites.

'Banks of the Nile' would have to be on there.  Probably 'North Star Grassman' as well.  'Fotheringay', 'Who Knows...' and 'Listen, Listen'.

That would do, but there are many others that could be used too.

For texture I would suggest Lets Jump the Broomstick - something to demonstrate there was more to Sandy than a ballad singer

Except that it's one of her worst records.

I agree. In truth, our Sandy wasn't the greatest interpreter of up tempo rock 'n' roll numbers was she?
Although, when I saw her at Kingston Polytechnic in the 70's, she came on unexpectedly and did a great version of 'Memphis Tennessee'. You probably needed to be there to realise the excitement that song caused!

So just for the sake of diversity, five of my favourite vocal performances not mentioned so far

Quiet Land of Erin
Genesis Hall
Crazy man Michael
The Music weaver
No More Sad refrains ( Marc Time version)

I do agree about Ballad of Easy Rider, a tremendous track.

Some great choices here. My list has some essentials, but a few that I just generally really enjoy, so for me its-

Who Knows Where The Time Goes
Solo
One Way Donkey Ride
By The Time It Gets Dark
The Sea
