A sailors life. Title: Re: Fairport @ 50 Poll - Song 1967 - 79 Post by: Shane (Skirky) on February 27, 2017, 11:13:48 PM One More Chance. There have been great performances and ensemble pieces, covers, and interpretations of traditional works, but this is the best bespoke band-generated song in the canon. It's atypical, and I'm not a fan of her work generally, but for whatever reason, Sandy Denny knocked this one out of the park.

Title: Re: Fairport @ 50 Poll - Song 1967 - 79 Post by: Shankly (Peter) on February 28, 2017, 10:41:37 AM Incredibly difficult choice but I think I'd go for sailor's life - it has a bit of everything. Wonderful vocals from Sandy and great electric guitar sections from Simon and RT and Swarb's fiddle. Just tremendous.

Sir Patrick Spens Title: Re: Fairport @ 50 Poll - Song 1967 - 79 Post by: ColinB on February 28, 2017, 11:39:43 AM Poor Will and the Jolly Hangman
One of the first Fairport songs I heard when a friend lent me his copy of RT's (guitar, vocal) album. Title: Re: Fairport @ 50 Poll - Song 1967 - 79 Post by: Bridgwit (Bridget) on February 28, 2017, 12:17:44 PM Now this is really hard!
Having deliberated all morning I'm going for Tam Lin. I think :-\ Title: Re: Fairport @ 50 Poll - Song 1967 - 79 Post by: Tasha on February 28, 2017, 03:14:11 PM Reynardine
Title: Re: Fairport @ 50 Poll - Song 1967 - 79 Post by: Tony Mc on February 28, 2017, 03:46:32 PM Matty Groves...because nothing signifies we are near the end of another Cropredy when you know Meet on the ledge is just moments away.
But sticking more with the rules, Poor will gets my vote. Title: Re: Fairport @ 50 Poll - Song 1967 - 79 Post by: Albie on February 28, 2017, 04:26:26 PM So many to choose from, but Tam Lin probably.

Title: Re: Fairport @ 50 Poll - Song 1967 - 79 Post by: RobertD on February 28, 2017, 04:40:20 PM Confirmed it isn't already selected, so I'm going with Genesis Hall since my first choices are already selected.
Title: Re: Fairport @ 50 Poll - Song 1967 - 79 Post by: DarrenWilliams on February 28, 2017, 09:01:39 PM What We Did On Our Holidays was the first FC album I listened to and Nottamun Town is the track that really knocked me for six and opened the door to a new genre of music (new to me at any rate - this was late 1980s).
Title: Re: Fairport @ 50 Poll - Song 1967 - 79 Post by: Adam on February 28, 2017, 09:20:45 PM Meet on the Ledge - familiarity may reduce its impact, but I really love the Holidays version. It was the second Fairport album I heard in 1987/8, and the track totally blew me away.

Just happens to be from the right era. Title: Re: Fairport @ 50 Poll - Song 1967 - 79 Post by: Will S on March 01, 2017, 02:24:52 PM To Althea From Prison. Beautifully arranged and played. Sir Patrick being a big favourite, but for me its; Bank of the sweet Primroses with Swarb singing. Jules * This might not be strictly true I think you are going to find yourself alone on this one Bridgj. It is a much beloved cornerstone of the Fairport catalogue and a song of such lightness of touch that it floats on gossamer wings, passing briefly but enthrallingly like an iridescent damsel fly on a summer's day. Yay :) I'm happy to be alone in this case. I see no point in saying I like it if I don't, however, I have just spent 30 minutes listening to various versions to make sure I'm not missing something vital. And IMHO I'm not. Funny, though, as I love Sloth!
