Title: Re: Worthy of mention. Post by: Greg on May 15, 2017, 12:48:57 PM There's a version of Fair Fortune's Star up on YouTube that I think is off this album. It's brilliant. Proper folk rock with a cracking solo by (I think) Albert Lee. Never heard the rest of the record so I'm quite excited for this release!

Not worth starting a new thread, but I just discovered that the first Hudson Ford album Nickelodeon, features one Gerry Conway on drums. The 3 HF albums are just out in a box, and long overdue. Post by: David Gladwin on June 21, 2017, 04:28:24 PM Marian Segal and Jade are getting the 3CD anthology treatment from Cherry Tree, in late August. Details from Spin CDs (I know the link looks wrong, but it works):
https://www.spincds.com/coming-soon/freeway-jam-radio-broadcast-cd-53572 Press release: ----- In the pantheon of rare Folk Rock albums from the genre’s golden era of the early Seventies, FLY ON STRANGEWINGS by Jade is a bona fide classic. Largely ignored on its release on DJM in1970, the album is now widely acclaimed, which has led collectors and connoisseurs to consider Jade’s main singer and songwriter, Marian Segal, as a much-overlooked talent. FLY ON STRANGEWINGS is now treated to a deluxe 3-CD edition which finally tells the full story of Marian Segal’s musical career. Compiled and annotated with Marian’s involvement, this new package offers a second disc of early recordings of Marian with fellow Jade member Dave Waite, while Disc Three brings the story more up-to-date with solo and Marian Segal Band recordings. Disc One re-presents the classic Fly On Strangewings album with seven contemporaneous bonus tracks, two of which are previously unissued. Before becoming Jade, Dave Waite and Marian (or Marianne) Segal were a duo, playing the university circuit and in London clubs at the height of the Swinging London era. Their music was a fusion of British and American folk, but already contained many original elements, including superlative vocals, in the vein of Sandy Denny and The Strawbs. This period is remembered on Disc Two, recordings which have been out of print for a decade. Four track sare previously unissued. Disc Three includes two historic mid-70s recordings with Jeff Wayne (of War of The Worlds fame). The albums include a host of session talent from the 1970s including Dave Mattacks, Herbie Flowers, Clem Cattini, Pete Sears, John Wetton, Chris Spedding and Terry Cox as well as sweeping string arrangements by Phil Dennys (Rodriguez). Post by: Alan2 on December 22, 2017, 02:01:15 PM At my most cynical, I'd say the trend for these bonzer giant boxes is a ploy to mine the rich seam of middle aged and retired fans, who are comfortably off and have the dosh to spend. I'm slightly allergic to boxed sets, so it doesn't affect me much - -I always go into 'do I really need it?' mode when I see these things advertised.

Nothing on the Who's official site yet.
This appears to be an official release on UMC (Universal Music Classics), and purports to be remastered by Bob Pridden. I have had several bootlegs of one or other of the Fillmore concerts over the years, and they are seriously flawed recordings of spectacular performances. One version of "Relax" speeds up to about 1000X normal (like pushing the FF button on a cassette recorder) during the instrumental interlude, I presume because the bootlegger wanted to "fit" the whole song on one side of an LP and didn't care how it sounded. If this is an official release, and has been truly speed corrected and cleaned up, it is a must-have for Who fans. Title: Re: Reissues of interest. I am pleased to report that my previous impression was incorrect - both "Relax" and "A Quick One" are presented in complete form (at least I can't detect any edits). Furthermore, the sound quality is as good as anything of that vintage could possibly be. If Keith were here, he would no doubt complain about his drums not being properly miked, but that was true of every live Who recording I've heard before the Tommy era. "My Generation" is interesting, but incredibly sloppy. Keith seems to be struggling with changing tempos and, frankly, finding something interesting to play while Pete experiments on top of everything. This is a proto-jam, something they did much better from Tommy-onward. I'm not sure I'll listen to MG again, but Disc 1 is worth the price of admission. Title: Re: Reissues of interest. I think the price will come down between now and the release date but 7a are a very small label specialising in releases by the individual members of the Monkees, beautifully packaged, for which there is a limited market. They do it for the love of it and do not, I think, make much of a profit so I am prepared to pay a little more for their releases. It seems increasingly that the cost of small run CDs is going up. One veteran independent artist that I recently went to see sells his CDs online for £20 each and they were the same price at his concert because that is what he needs to charge to break even on them. To compensate, he also sells his albums on a USB stick at a considerably lower price. Title: Re: Reissues of interest. Post by: Jules Gray on June 19, 2018, 11:46:25 AM Have you seen this Jules? I have, thanks Paul. I don't know how bothered I am about a live album, to be honest. I nearly blew my top though when I saw that the recent reissues of Nez's first 6 albums all have tempting bonus tracks. The downside is that thus far they are download-only. I bought one track, a 1971 remake of Circle Sky with the Second National Band, while I wait and see what gives in terms of a possible physical release for these reissues. I like the look of their earlier comp. ‘Coming into Los Angeles’, but that does seem to be vinyl only. Unless anyone knows better? Title: Re: Reissues of interest. Oh, and for Paul, Ringo and John and George's families. None of whom need it. The record company on the other hand... My copy has not arrived yet so I haven't heard it. I have always maintained that Abbey Road was not in need of a remix. Like you my hearing is not great but I am looking forward to things like the separation of the guitars on The End into different channels. Similarly with the harmonies on Here Comes The Sun (nice promo video on YouTube by the way) the full I Want You with Billy Preston's organ solo and The Long One as originally envisaged. None of this replaces the original and much of it I may not go back to twice but if there is one thing as revelatory as the long take of Revolution from the White Album box it will be worth it. Discs of demos and outtakes are always a bit of a mixed bag but I think they are more hit than miss on this set. Some nice early versions of songs that appeared on later albums. A few previously unreleased songs of variable quality and the near 10 minute take of Hear Me Lord with the extended guitar solo is worth the price of admission in its own right. In addition to remastered sound, it sports a side of rarities including "Eminence Front" partly sung by Roger Daltrey and a longer version of "Cry If You Want." I'm a hard maybe. I don't really listen to this album, which I have purchased in multiple formats starting in, oh, 1982. Title: Re: Reissues of interest. I always think it's a better than decent album that stands up against a lot of the (really rather average) Who studio albums (there's a couple of classics in there too, of course). I'd have less than no interest in a very expanded set though I think. I'm increasingly coming to the conclusion that most albums are best left how they were. Title: Re: Reissues of interest. Only two discs though I think so not vastly expanded. Just one side of the vinyl contains extras. The original album has been stretched over three sides of vinyl. Title: Re: Reissues of interest. Post by: mickf on June 20, 2022, 09:46:03 AM Not one of my favourite Who albums, but, as David said, there are a couple of classics on it. I have a feeling, although I may be wrong, that this one was more of a hit in the US than over here. I must admit I also feel that most albums are best left alone. It's one thing to include some live stuff and some tracks that were never released, but when you get a different version of a track that's either almost the same as or (as in many cases) worse than the original, what's the point?

Jules Full House is a rare example of an album that was actually improved as an entity by the addition of extra tracks. Another example would be the addition of the magnificent Silver Springs to Rumours For the most part I regard the bonus tracks on reissues as something separate from the album itself, sometimes worth hearing in their own right, sometimes less so. Also speaking of Full House , I have a pink Island label pressing with the correct track listing on the label but I daren't play the vinyl in case it still hasn't got you know what on it , and I picked up an original sleeve not in very good condition with you know what listed on it , before the over printing kicked in. It's just nice to own a copy and look at. Title: Re: Reissues of interest. I wouldn't be surprised if It's Hard was more popular here than elsewhere in the world. I checked the database and they performed a grand total of two UK shows in 1982 (both in Birmingham) before embarking on a 40-date tour of North America. So they promoted it heavily here and nowhere else. Title: Re: Reissues of interest. Sometime in the dim and distant 70s, I'm in the living room of a flat where I've bought my little bit of contraband for the week, and someone puts this on. I realise saxophones can be as exciting as guitars, and my listening is never the same again. Jazz becomes part of the musical repertoire of my life. I never bought the album , but 'it all comes round again'. Title: Re: Reissues of interest. Could buy this in an urge to educate myself, as well as because it features some unreleased material by the peerless Kevin Coyne. Title: Re: Reissues of interest. I can see why some people accuse them of being saccharine, but when you're in the mood for a bit of a sugar-hit there's no better band :) Jane Relf's vocals are lovely and John Tout is a great keyboardist, heard to equally good effect on two Strawbs albums, Hero & Heroine and Ghosts. As to the later Annie Haslam version of the band, I'd particularly recommend Novella, which is probably their most adventurous outing and often overlooked.

I think you mean John Hawken Phil, John Tout replaced him towards the end of 1970. Hawken was the last man standing from the original line-up but supposedly he had a problem with Jane Relf's replacement and jumped ship to join Spooky Tooth briefly. I've just got the Live Fillmore West and Other Adventures box, lots of early live material from the original line-up and some interesting video including a BBC documentary from '69 I've not seen before. But I agree that for many of us those box sets are just too much .... as in taking up too much space on the shelf as well as too much money. Now, when Jethro Tull brought out their Songs from the Wood and Heavy Horses box sets, they also brought out single disc "best of the box" releases. Those really were worth getting as they included many of the "new" bonus tracks. I suspect that the reason nobody now puts out such releases is that it discourages too many of us to refrain from splashing out on the box set itself! (In any case, I suspect that no other band could boast of such a wealth of high-quality unreleased material as Tull ... and from just one songwriter as well ... ).

I'm still holding out for a comprehensive remastered box of their albums from DOFP through SS, with bonus tracks. If such a unicorn exists, please tip me off. There seems to be a chasm between the Decca and Threshold releases that makes this challenging to pull off. I've been making due with "This is the Moody Blues" for two decades or so. Meanwhile, I'm also holding out for a sealed copy of Billy Joel's complete albums box set, which covered everything back in 2011 and promptly sold out across the globe. I didn't become aware of its existence until recently. Title: Re: Reissues of interest. Post by: GubGub (Al) on March 23, 2023, 10:03:58 PM £75? Not a hope that this mug will be buying that. I have ordered it for £56 including delivery from my usual UK price busting source. Nearly £20 cheaper than Amazon UK. I love The Moodies, but I'm not really a fan of box sets with hundreds of extra tracks that I'll probably not listen to more than once. The extra tracks are pretty good here, a lengthy set of BBC sessions and a full 1969 concert from the Royal Albert Hall. I think I am likely to go back to both of those. Also the blu-ray has both the albuma and the concert in surround. Not everyone wants or needs the latter but for those of us who like that sort of thing this set is a pretty good collection, at least at the price I have paid. Compare that to the flimsy Revolver box by the Beatles last year and the ludicrously over inflated price of that one. Title: Re: Reissues of interest. That's a story worth a TV documentary - how they track down the musicians , get the permission's , best sources for leftovers , which extra tracks make the cut , which remain unheard , how they make economic sense of it all , how many to press in which format , marketing m publicity..... Didn't they have their own TV channel Title: Re: Reissues of interest. Post by: davidmjs on March 24, 2023, 07:48:57 PM £75? Which is? Amazon.de? Title: Re: Reissues of interest. I have used FNAC in France too with the same result. Title: Re: Reissues of interest. Post by: davidmjs on March 27, 2023, 10:27:29 AM Very simply. No, I think it is luck of the draw. I have looked at stuff from time to time that hasn't been any cheaper than here but I have been lucky with the last two Dylan Bootleg boxes, the Doobie Bros quadrophonic box, Vol 2 of the Joni Mitchell Archives (though that one did reduce in price in the UK fairly quickly), the Beatles Let It Be box and probably some others that I have forgotten. Remember the price to the UK is cheaper than the price you initially see as they remove the German purchase tax at the checkout. The Waterboys Magnificent Seven big box was another one. I got it from jpc for just over £50. Currently £128 on Amazon UK. Title: Re: Reissues of interest. Post by: davidmjs on March 27, 2023, 12:40:10 PM Very simply. Dave Evans : Elephantasia ( Earth Records, 2 formats). This was scheduled for a vinyl reissue a few years ago on Rif Mountain but was inexplicably cancelled. This time it looks like happening. I expect it will be pretty good, although word is the LP won't come from the original tapes which are 'lost '. I don't know how someone can lose something as big and important as a reel to reel tape, but there you go, we hear of it happening. It was Dave Evans's 2nd album for Village Thing and really is very nice. RIP Mr. Evans. Title: Re: Reissues of interest. I love vinyl as some of you will know by now, but I won't be buying either of these. At £125 and £180 respectively, they won't attract a lot of buyers. I might have been interested in the Donovan, but it would have to be on the other side on £100. All the Young Dudes I already have in Absolute Analogue's audiophile edition, which I would recommend to anyone interested in how this album sounded when it came out. Title: Re: Reissues of interest. The Beatles are like the air, a common treasury for all The time for buying them is long gone. It stays in my mind that 30 years ago someone pointed out that Beatles albums in the relatively new CD format were not going down in price, ever. Other albums drop in price as they become part of the massive ocean of back catalogue. Beatles stuff is repackaged and resold to us and always at a premium price. I'll try to buy something from a new band instead, just to encourage them. Title: Re: Reissues of interest. Post by: Jules Gray on October 29, 2023, 11:55:17 AM The time for buying them is long gone. I think I've found all these second hand for less than a tenner each. I notice Genesis's back catalogue was reissued (Again). I don't see much shortage of their stuff in second hand shops. Some people just like new stuff- i love a pristine new record. All the luck and respect in the world to folks who can find used copies. Reissues also remind me that it does indeed ' all come round again'. :) Title: Re: Reissues of interest. There is indeed. And of course there's the argument that purchasing new or reissued music new, in a physical form, ensures the artist gets a few coppers at least. Title: Re: Reissues of interest. I'd love to ask Simon just how much he sees out of these reissues... ;) ;D But, yes, definitely. Title: Re: Reissues of interest. Post by: Alan2 on October 25, 2024, 12:40:13 PM Juliet Lawson : Boo! I haven't checked this out yet but apparently it's another lost folk/songwriter album. Early 70s. It may even have Fairport connections. Title: Re: Reissues of interest. Some of the 2nd hand stuff I've bought plays pretty poorly, and also smells. I've had to remove stuff from Oxfam Coventry from my collection as the smell of 1970s pub they come with was spreading and infecting everything else. Looks good, especially as I only have the first one (If You Saw Thro' My Eyes).

Post by: davidmjs on November 21, 2024, 05:20:37 PM The Pentangle albums box set gets a 14-LP release... I mean any vinyl head that doesn't have these albums already needs a good slap so...who knows? But, personally, I'm quite happy with the CDs (which can be picked up for £45 or so)...

I'm going to have to.think very hard about this one. I mean, i have copies of nearly all Pentangle on vinyl , all but one purchased new. So unless there's some superhuman mastering effort going on involving the original tapes.... Hmm, a standalone vinyl reissue if Solomon's Seal might do. |
