Less folky than the first two albums from what I understand. More of a straight up rock album. I'm looking forward to it but I hope the change of direction is not a mistake.

The single sounds exactly like it's a long lost follow up to Shoot Out the Lights.  Absolutely impossible to dislike, but like most of their material, I can't but help wonder why they are wanting to follow the R&L line quite so slavishly?

They are very rocky live (full band line up obviously). Fronted by two electric guitars, not an acoustic in sight when I saw them.

Indeed , as Fairport used to be at times , with Simon and Maart with his gold top Les Paul

I'm thinking I might just stop with the debut album, and the ep I have.  I like their sound but I don't really want a more rocked up version.

If you like rocking R&L there's nowt to be afraid of.  One is a direct extension of t'other.

Amazon US have a track listing for the 12 CDs but no details of the thirteenth disc, which I think I'm right in saying will be an audio DVD or Blu-ray with 5.1 mixes. I've been trying to convince myself I'm done with expensive multi-disc box sets but I feel I might make an exception for this. This seems pretty comprehensive for the Virgin years but has any idea what is being earmarked for the even bigger box set that Snapper have in the pipeline?

Intriguing. RT doesn't usually like this stuff coming out and has been known to try and block releases but this is on a legitimate label, Angel Air so does not seem to be a grey market product.

Are they really legit?  That screams 'boot' all over it to me.  They spent at least a fiver on the cover, anyway.  Still, will be interesting to hear...

That was my thought too but yes they are an absolutely legit reissue company of many years standing. For a long time they held the licence to issue Mott The Hoople's Island albums (for example) though this has now reverted back to whoever owns Island (BMG?). They have put out solo work by Verden Allen and Overend Watts. They have an extensive catalogue and unlike grey market labels they have a full website with an online shop and clear contact details including postal address. I own a number of their releases including both British Lions albums and some After The Fire material that was issued in collaboration with Pete Banks from the band (BBC Recordings. Demos for their fourth album. A live album etc).

I do notice that the label has recently changed ownership and has been sold by the (I think) married couple who used to run it.

That one is definitely a grey market release. Real Gone are prime movers in that market. Presumably a recycled radio broadcast.

Clive and Christine plus John Kirkpatrick, Ruari McFarlane and Gerry Conway. It's from a Radio Trent broadcast - Angel Air must have done a licensing deal with whoever owns their archive these days, I don't think they exist any more. They've also put out quite a few other similar titles recently - Graham Parker and the Rumour, Steeleye Span, Gallagher and Lyle, Jimmy Page. There's been an off-air recording of this doing the rounds for some years, it's also the full gig so hopefully they'll do the right thing and not chop it down to a single CD.

Are you sure Al, I thought Real Gone were legit? The two guys that started the label have a decent track record with other reissue companies. I know they also did the Fairport Finland 1971 CD, which I thought had a sniff of grey area about it, but they appear to have a lot of other stuff on their website that clearly isn't.

I've got the CD, it's the gig where the Across a Crowded Room video was filmed. As far as I'm aware there's never been radio broadcast of it. Unlike the video it's the full show, so definitely not just a rip of the audio track. It's pretty decent, although the vocals are a bit burried in the mix at times.

My mistake and apologies. I got them confused with one of the faceless European grey market labels. I forgot that Real Gone also put out the recent Badfinger Warner Bros reissues (though these were not very well received).

I might be interested in this. It  marks the time after which I lost interest in RT, so the tracklist has lots of familiar  (to me) stuff.

Has anyone seen a confirmed track listing? Angel Air's website isn't showing it yet and neither are Amazon. It's already on various streaming sites but Amazon's version is incomplete with just the 16 track main set but none of the encores and Spotify's is even more truncated with only 11 tracks. I see Christine's Warm Love Gone Cold is shown as The Life and Loves of a She Devil Tune, which would indicate that someone hasn't put in a lot of effort getting the detail right. That and the dreadful artwork make it look like a typical grey area, even if it isn't one. Sounds pretty decent though, although I haven't compared it with my off-air version yet, I'm assuming it's going to be a significant upgrade but I have my doubts.

That's strange, it only had eleven when I looked. So a double CD then, so why not include the encores?

Cat Stevens  has or is about to, re record Tea for the Tillerman for  50th anniversary release.  I'm not a fan of his particularly   but  I'm curious.  

Why do artists do this(re-recording classic material)?  It is always a bad idea...and yet they seem to stubbornly persist in convincing themselves otherwise.

I don't know why they do it. Is it very common? I'm trying to think of artists who've done it.

Obviously Fairport have re-recorded the odd song, and done an album full of them, but never replicated a whole album in the studio (cf. Babbocombe Lee live). The only ones I can think of are both Martin Turner and Wishbone Ash re-recording Argus.

I actually nearly mentioned the Martin Turner Argus.  I really rate that.  I think legal/moral reasserting of material is (very nearly) a get out of jail card  ;)

I think it's occasionally done for legal reasons, so the artist can obtain financial rewards by re-recording popular tunes that, by virtue of old contracts, belong to somebody else. Other times, I presume it's done for artistic reasons. Sometimes, both. In 1987, Roy Orbison put out a collection called "In Dreams: The Greatest Hits," featuring very familiar tunes re-recorded in the studio using modern technology. Wikipedia says his original recordings belonged to Monument Records, with which he was involved in a legal dispute at the time. I really love this collection. I prefer this version of "In Dreams" to the original. I have a mid-80s compilation rerecorded by Pure Prairie League, as well, which is sonically superior to their original recordings.

Lately, Taylor Swift has been threatening to go down this path in order to co-opt sales of her catalog titles, which currently belong to her old label, Big Machine.

Not whole albums, but Suzanne Vega recorded four albums of acoustic re-recordings (largely - there were a few 'new' songs in there) of her songs, at least partly for control reasons.

Although Wishbone Ash's was part of a live session with an audience recorded for XM Radio in the States, rather than a studio re-recording. Universal had recently put out the 2CD deluxe version of Argus so a full run through of the album was a regular part of their set at the time.

Come to think of it, The Strawbs did a revamp of Hero and Heroine a few years back. Not my favourite of their albums but I think it actually adds something to the original.

That's interesting. I didn't buy it because I felt happy enough with the original. Out of curiosity, where do you feel the new recording adds to the music?

Publishing royalties, I imagine...

IQ recorded a new version of their cassette-only debut album Seven Stories Into Eight when they gave it a CD release. Mainly because the master tape had deteriorated so badly they had to master the CD from an original cassette, so decided to re-record it and release both versions as the double CD Seven Stories Into 98.

I seem to remember The Enid recording new versions of their first two albums in the 80s, can't remember all the details but something to do with a dispute with EMI who released them originally.

Firstly it begins with a 'prologue ' which is the lyric to 'Lay a little light on me'. Then between tracks 6 and 7, 'Midnight Sun' and Out in the cold' there's a short bridge piece 'Aurora', played on keyboards. Finally there's a reprise of 'Round and Round at the very end, finishing the album.

The effect of all if this, I find, apart from making the album longer, is that it slightly subverts my expectations and gives the album a more organic, layered feel.

Overall it's a great performance, with something of a live feel. You may find DCs vocals a strain at times. If you're at all familiar with later Strawbs you'll know what I mean here. 8)

Genius guitarist... Mighty Baby and Chilli Willi and the Red Hot Peppers are the bands most people know him from.. He was also an antiquarian bookdealer of great renown and legend.   Like all Shagrat releases, this is a peach.

Live tribute to  Leonard Cohen.  Apologies if this is common knowledge. Sound interesting to me.

There’s a Who Sell Out deluxe reissue coming up with 112 songs. A hundred and twelve! I mean, even by the standards of the dozen or so they got right on the original LP, that’s got to be a lot of filler, hasn’t it?

Mono & stereo versions of the album. Contemporary singles and B sides. Pete's demoes and a disc of tracks recorded betweeen completing the album and starting Tommy. Of the boxed sets being released that day it looks like a lot less filler than the John Lennon Plastic Ono Band box. A 10 track album expanded to more than 150!  :o

That is (to my ears) a genuinely odd collection of not very mutually coherent tracks.

Well, I don't know how coherent it is because I have never heard the vast majority of the tracks, which is probably why it appeals to me and at £25 for 4 discs it is definitely worth a punt for me.

It's a bloody flimsy thread to tie a collection together, I'd argue, but it's actually not a bad comp.

I finally took the time to leaf through the big "Sell Out" book and play with the extras in the box. The book contains two clever essays by Pete Townshend, plus several more by eyewitnesses to the 1967-68 scene reflected in "Sell Out" (e.g., pirate radio DJ, owner of the Speakeasy). It's got a track-by-track commentary and lyrics. It's also full of contemporary photos, not just of the band, but also of people and places referenced in the album. The extras include two posters, two vinyl 45s with an adapter (reproductions of the original "I Can See For Miles" and "Magic Bus" singles and sleeves), and other goodies reminiscent of the original "Live at Leeds" package. All in all, it's a fab package.

Apparently (if unexpectedly) Robert Plant and Alison Krauss are supposed to be recording a follow up to Raising Sand.

I have to disagree regarding the latter. Skimpy packaging and nearly £90 more than the three disc set. That is an extra £30 per disc without any other real sweeteners. The 8 disc vinyl does look attractive though.

You should check them out Jules, a really fine band who were sadly always under most people's radar. They toured quite a bit with Man and swapped a few members along the way.

I have had the Help Yourself Reaffirmation 2CD set on order from Amazon.
At the first attempt it became unavailable.
At the second attempt the delivery date got pushed back to early July.
Thanks for the tip off David, it has enabled me to cancel the Amazon order and will now purchase the only slightly more expensive 6cd set direct from Cherry Red.
My introduction to Help Yourself was from the All Good Clean Fun LP.
One of those multi-artist compilation albums from a labels roster of recording artists especially popular in the early seventies.
I have picked up on many great artists via these type of compilations over the years.

An 8CD set from Faust... Details on the SDE website. Around £88. Only 2000? being produced. Vinyl version, too. Fill yer boots, fans of avant-garde krautrock.

All good  Clean Fun got a CD release some Years ago but apparently the tracklisting was different from the original 2LP.

Just been doing a compare and contrast between the LP and CD versions Alan.
The CD set has been expanded to 3CD's each with a very generous playing time.
It was released in 2004.

Mine turned up a couple of days ago and I was listening last night. Need to listen again but it sounds like a strong set. I have long been a fan of The Korgis and James Warren in general. To me this is reminiscent of a peak period 10cc album, which is high praise indeed.

On the subject of James Warren, I bumped into my buddy Mutter Slater this afternoon who told me they are releasing a new Stackridge compilation  soon  - 3 discs apparently and not all remasteredl studio but some live stuff.  Hopefully some good stuff.

Yes he lives in Bridport  , did you get to see him play when you lived here?   The album is to celebrate 50 years of Stackridge - unbelievable. I think apart from Keith Gemmell they are all still around even their original manager Mike Tobin who is in his 80s now.

Just the once, yes.  I'll be honest and say it wasn't really my thing, but very nice to see him nonetheless.  Definitely looking forward to the compilation.

His solo stuff is very different ,  lacks the quirkiness  and humour of the Stackridge  I much prefer his Stackridge output

My favorite band on Earth. As I've said here before, in addition to their scores of incredible originals, Los Lobos have recorded and/or performed many of the best covers I've heard (taking "La Bamba" to number one in the process). Politician (Cream), Don't Keep Me Wonderin' (Allmans), What's Goin' On (Marvin Gaye), Bertha (Grateful Dead), Shoot Out The Lights (an obscure English songwriter), I Wanna Be Like You (from the Jungle Book), and now Sail On, Sailor.

I'm always wary of the covers album.  It usually means inspiration has dried up.  Can anyone think of an essential covers album?

I'm wary of the covers album for the same reasons.
However, one of my favourites is The Wonderful World Of The Wondermints - currently out of print but available from Discogs from £4.80. Featuring entertaining covers of The Porpoise Song, Skyman, Arnold Layne, Guess I'm Dumb, etc., and a superb alt-rock version of Knowing Me, Knowing You (no "A-ha's" whatsoever), it's no wonder Brian Wilson said "If I'd had these guys in 1967 I would've taken Smile on the road".

That does sound genuinely intriguing.

Here's a Brian Wilson/Wondermints story - I talked to a fellow at a Pet Sounds 50th show who was carrying a BW-autographed copy of the Wonderful World... He said he waved the LP at Brian during the soundcheck, and Brian said "I don't sign things." The guy explained it wasn't a Beach Boys LP and started singing the praises of the Wondermints. BW was intrigued, and a stagehand retrieved the LP for BW to autograph before the show. So the guy has a one-of-a-kind Wondermints LP autographed by Brian Wilson, who's not on the album.

For about fifteen minutes the Wondermints might just have been the best band on the planet.  Baby Lemonade run them pretty damn close at times though....and one (sort of) became the Beach Boys, and the other Love.  It all kind of made sense in the end perhaps...

Another vote for Loft music, Ever Fallen In Love is a brilliant interpretation. Whilst it's various artists, the Rubber Folk reworking of Rubber Soul has some great tracks on it and several artists emerge with a big thumbs up from me.

More recently they've (as you've discovered) become one of the best reissue/repackaging/compilation labels in the business.  I could spend my entire buying budget on their releases...and I often do!

I don't disagree but there is some algorithm type thing that dictates these things. Something like every eight note has to be different so the entire feel may be the same and the melody almost identical but just varies 12.5% of the time.  ;D

Steve Ashley's Family Album (Revisted) Well it has arrived and I have to say it's a lovely package, if you are going to re-release or revisit an album and bring people in who missed it the first time round this is how to do it, with extensive sleeve notes which give you a really insight into the creation of the album and lyrics, and some extra tracks. I have been a fan of Steve's since hearing Speedy Return in the mid to late eighties from my dads slight jumpy vinyl and with the exception of the demo tapes, I have managed to get hold of his entire back catalogue. I think he is a brilliant songwriter, who delves into subjects both personal, and universal, he gets to the heart of things and captures the essense of sujects and takes you on interesting journeys, making you laugh, cry, think or see things from a different perspective. On the family album he has surrounded himself with a fine cast of musicians, most of whom will be familiar to fairport old and new, I think this hints at some of what was to come from the early sound from the eighties incarnation of fairport. The songs on this album produce a snapshot of family life, and the characters and familiar incidents from Granny, Dad and even the family dog. Overall the album has a sound of a bunch of old friends getting together telling tales of the family, through words and music and it has a real relaxed feel, with the renewwed sound giving a chance for the music to shine. It has some real high points, for me feeling lazy (here have I heard this before cropredy perhaps?) and Somewhere in a song one of the extra tracks stand out, definitely worth it for these for me. This will never be my favourite of Steve's albums but with such greats to compete with , it doesn't mean its a dud, but sorry but 'Lost and Found' must contain an insight or humour that is for someone else, I just don't get it....and I have dogs.

Peggy's bass is brill (as usual) throughout and Simon, perfect (as usual) and.... little Chris Leslie in the days before he became a Fairporter, wonderful.

I missed this album the first time around so it is a shear joy to be listening to it now as if a new album in my collection.

Angel Air release some great stuff generally , but they could make more effort with sleeve art.

When I spoke to Mutter a few weeks ago, he said Andy Davis was choosing the tracks and there were some different live versions of things - I am bit disappointed that Angel Air have not given a bit more information in their listing about that. Not sure if it comes with a booklet or not either.

If I was a member of a 'heritage' band and someone put out a compilation or box set of my earlier material, I'd want it to be Cherry Red (or one of their subsidiary labels).  The contrast between their attempts at quality control and those of some of the others is breath-taking.

I don't have the set but I suspect that any live tracks come from the two live albums that Angel Air has the rights too, The Forbidden City and The Final Bow. In particular I notice that all of the A Victory For Common Sense tracks come from the latter as Angel Air does not have the rights to the final studio album.

Apparently the Jethro Tull Broadsword and the Beast boxed set (due for release next year) may contain up to 40 tracks from those sessions, of which 15 or so have never seen the light of day.

I’ve a real soft spot for Broadsword, and some of the session tracks that have been released already are fantastic (Jack frost and the hooded crow, Jack-a-Lynn, etc). Very high hopes!

That was the new album as I became a fan so I too am interested.  The session tracks I've heard sound much better than the finished album (imho).

An all new Jethro Tull album is out soon, apparently.

Not of interest  to me, being  a pre 1975 Tull listener, but I know there are Tull die hards amongst you.

Very funny and so well observed about family dynamics. Beautifully performed by a stellar cast and gorgeous Isle of Wight scenery too.

I'm a fan of Spriguns. It's folk-rock but like all the best bands in that genre, they don't quite sound like anybody else. Looks like an excellent value set.

I was incredulous when Jules said something similar.  Mighty Baby, Chilli Willi & the Red Hot Peppers, Savoy Brown, Pink Fairies etc etc etc.  Also a renowned and important antiquarian bookseller.

I've heard of all of those bands, but never actually heard any of them.

My brother used to have a Pink Fairies album so I must have heard them but can't remember anything about it. I have heard a bit of Savoy Brown, but only the early stuff as I used to know one of the band members quite well.

He was a bit of a blink and you'll miss it part of them tbh.  Absolutely everybody who has an interest in 'psychedelic' influenced British rock music should know Mighty Baby though.  They're one of the truly great bands.  

That's where I am too.  Apart from maybe Pink Fairies.  I know i considered getting a compilation by them once to refresh my memory.

 I remember hearing a track from the 'Big front yard' album on an obscure radio station (WFMU? Jeff Conklin?) and enjoying it enormously, so I was hugely disappointed that the Shagrat/Thylacine imprint was only putting it out on vinyl (don't get me wrong, putting it out at all is laudable), but I do wish there were a downloadable option available.... :-\

 Still available I note.... Aye, I know what you mean.  I'm having a falling out with vinyl and learning to love my CDs again in a big way thing at the moment.  I'm thinking of selling the lot tbh apart from the things that don't exist in any other format  ;D

Jah Wobble has recorded a new version of PiL's Metal Box album, with more "sophisticated" arrangements and dubwise production. Out on Friday 19th November. Unless Mr Lydon decides to try to block it, as he has done with other PiL tapes that drummer Martin Atkins wanted to release. Hopefully not, seeing as relations twixt the 2 Johns appear to be reasonably cordial.

On its way to me right now from Canada: Bachman-Cummings: The Collection.

I ordered an autographed (by Messrs. Bachman and Cummings) copy. It features a collection of songs by the referenced gentlemen, composed together or separately, and spanning the Guess Who (1969-1971 period), Bachman-Turner Overdrive and Burton's solo career.

I am a huge fan of the Guess Who's music, stretching from their early days as a great garage band mimicking British Invasion music in the early 1960s, all the way to the mid-1970s, when they effortlessly churned out pop/rock masterpieces on every LP. During their fertile period, the band featured the cream of Canadian musicians and songwriters: Randy Bachman, Garry Peterson, Jim Kale, Burton Cummings, Kurt Winter, Greg Leskiw, Donnie McDougall, Bill Wallace, and Dominic Troiano. BTO also has considerable charm (with the greatest Canadian belter, Fred Turner), as do Burton's somewhat dated-sounding solo albums ("Stand Tall" may be his best song). (The less said about the Guess Who, post-Burton, the better.)

I think I already own all of this material, but that won't stop me from happily plowing through it again.

You might say a person 'can't get arrested ' liking Gentle Giant now 😄, but I still like them. Civilian, iirc, was their last album, and not of the standard of the Vertigo albums or In A Glass House, but would still be if interested to a fan.

You couldn't be more wrong, Alan...their critical status is higher than it's ever been and all their reissues sell well, get 4 or 5 star reviews etc etc.

They certainly get a lot of attention on another forum I frequent, mainly from Americans.
I bought the recent Alucard vinyl reissues of the vertigo albums and they are superb.

I really like what I've heard by Iain Matthews from that era. He'd moved away from the country rock style into a bit more soft-rock / AOR and even a bit of new wave. Sounds a bit dated now mind. I love the cover of The Baby She's On The Street (Jona Lewie) on Siamese Friends.

I've ordered the Iain Matthews set. Seems like a bargain!  Stealin' Home was the first of his solo albums I bought - way back - and the only one I owned for many years.

Im guessing you already have the album in some edition Jules?  I've never had it, so the box is worth my considering.  

I do. And I would consider buying an expanded CD of the same, but I just don't need or want all the vinyl and extra gubbins. It's hard enough keeping up with all the "super deluxe" releases for the artists I'm obsessed by, without attempting to do likewise for artists that I have a more casual interest in.

Just received my autographed "Bachman Cummings: The Collection" box set from Canada!

Now I have some clarity on the contents. It contains the following complete albums by the Guess Who:

(1) Wheatfield Soul
(2) Canned Wheat
(3) American Woman
(4) Share The Land
(5) So Long, Bannatyne

These CDs purport to be remastered, and bonus tracks on previously issued CDs have been removed. I already have excellent remasters of all but Canned Wheat, issued by Iconoclassic Records, though I am curious whether they have been improved. Canned Wheat is a notoriously poor-sounding record (BC hates it), so I look forward to hearing what they were able to do with it. The box also contains:

(1) Bachman-Turner Overdrive: Collected
(2) Burton Cummings: Collected

These are greatest hits/favorites collections presumably curated by the artists.

As a serious fan of the Guess Who, my collection also contains the post-Bannatyne albums as well as the pre-Wheatfield Soul catalog. I guess the artists wanted to focus on the "middle period," which is unquestionably their most fertile.

Our RADIO SESSIONS CD is due out this October on the Think Like A Key Music label. In our heyday, we recorded only two BBC radio sessions, a Top Gear slot and an In Concert, both with John Peel. Frustratingly, the BBC’s tapes were wiped, but after extensive research with European collectors, TLAK has been able to locate off-air recordings of both sessions, which have been painstakingly restored. Added to these are brief radio sessions for Dutch and Danish radio sourced from the original recordings, as well as a Dublin rehearsal take of Sign On My Mind featuring Gary Moore, our friend and guest on Heavy Petting. The accompanying 24-page illustrated booklet has been compiled by Fitting Pieces To The Jigsaw author Adrian Whittaker.

Talking of old radio material and off air recordings,  plans are afoot for a large box of Martin Carthy radio stuff. There's been a call out for anyone with old cassettes. That could include me, but my tape collection is in miscellaneous boxes and was never systematically sorted anyway.

Aye, from Colin Harper...it's a massive box!  Last thing I saw from him stated: "I posted here a few weeks back about crowd-sourcing otherwise errant material for a 'Martin Carthy at the BBC' box set. I'm thrilled to say that between BBC holdings, producer-held masters and generous donations of off-air cassettes (late 70s to 90s) from fans that it's looking like a 20CD+DVD project. It will be a colossal celebration of the great man's artistry. 🙏
One thing, though... one of the best concerts in the set-in-progress, to my ears, is a 32-minute broadcast by the brief trio Wood, Wilson & Carthy, on Radio 3's 'Impressions', 4/1/97. We have one imperfect complete recording of this so far, and the British Library seems to have a few minutes of it. Restoration magic will make a difference but I'm hoping someone else out there recorded it... Anyone? 🤔

I am the opposite way roiund. I have tried with Steeleye, I really have. I love Hark but after that they just don't do it for me. The absence of drums on some of the records is part of the problem I think. I haven't heard their more recent stuff.

They've had a drummer since the very early days! I must admit that my interest in Steeleye had waned over the last 30 years or so (I've always loved Hark though) but the addition of a second lead guitarist over the last few years has given them a lot of extra bite and the live stuff has been particularly fab. Another band could take note!!

Er...no they haven't.  They didn't have a permanent one until well into '73.

Err.... without a drummer  1969 to 1973 = 4 years , with a drummer 1973 to 2022 = nearly 50 years . I think if you were 54 you'd class your first 4 years as very early!!

But aren't those years regarded as their heyday? They are certainly at the core of the forthcoming box set. I have listened to those albums and they just didn't grab me. I never got beyond them.

I love the first few Steeleye albums, but from 'All Around my Hat' I can live without them. Too much tum te tum rhythm. Although I saw them livev just a couple of years ago and they were very good.

Yep, this.  To the Nth degree...  And to add to it all, I've really gone off Maddy's voice recently.  It started with the 2012 Sandy tour which I didn't think put her in a good light at all (I realise many others disagree).  

But I still adore the first few years  I could well be tempted.

Yep. He's been back in the studio for a while. He also takes the lead vocal on a track on the new Dirty Knobs (Mike Campbell) album. I think Campbell plays some guitar on Ian's forthcoming record too.

Yes, not the best, especially from a man of Cambell's vintage but he has been playing shows under that name for decades. I imagine it has some specific derivation other than the obvious. Their first album a couple of years ago was great.

I haven't listened to much from them since their first couple of albums. I have a friend who spent her late teens living in a Krishna temple and she finds Crispian's spiritual influences somewhat nauseating.

But I saw them at T in the Park a couple of times back in the day and enjoyed their music. Didn't their keyboard player go off and join Oasis?

I think a lot of the spiritualism is fairly tongue in cheek.  They were ridiculous posh idiots (I mean look at his heritage) who said lots of stupid things - that whole Swastika thing backfired on them enormously.  But having said that they were a blast to see live around the time of the first album...

I was really into them back then - bought most of their cd singles. First time I saw the at T they played one of the marquee stages in the afternoon and it was packed out.

The whole class thing still gets picked up on. It's a bit of an obsession here in the UK. Look at Frank Turner. He went to Eton but that wasn't his choice. I know his sister and as she said for families like them, that's what happened - you got sent off to boarding school. Frank then got into metal and punk and has now released his 9th studio album.

It's a rock n roll thing isn't it. You have to be seen to pay your dues, not have your daddy pay them for you!  ;D

It can be unfortunate. There are certainly some very talented atrists who had privileged upbringings that can work against them. They can't help their background but by the same token their background often affords them opportunities that others do not have. The British public in general don't like any hint of unfair advantage. I personally think that Sean Lennon is something close to a genius. He is a brilliantly gifted musician and writer but his parentage (and his slightly avant garde leanings) probably works against him in terms of popular acceptance even if they have actually enabled his work and his access to the media. But Kula Shaker had a couple of songs that were catchy enough to succeed in their own right before people knew too much about them.

I'd agree with you there.  But for every Sean there is a Julian....

I don't think that was the case with Frank. From what I've read he cut off all contact with his parents after he left school so there was no cash from them when he started trying to earn a living playing music.

And being the offspring of famous musicians can be an albatross around your neck. I think Sean Lennon has probably had an easier time of it than Julian, as has Dhani Harrison and Zak Starkey. But I don't envy James McCartney as his old man casts a very long shadow.

Julian is a case in point. He seems to be a nice guy and pretty level headed (against all odds) but was a fairly pedestrian musician. I actually like some of his stuff but there is no question that his music career was enabled by his parentage, particularly in the wake of his father's death, but faded pretty quickly when it became clear that he didn't have the chops to sustain it.



It is an interesting comparison. Julian got major record industry backing and early but fleeting commercial success. Sean is critically loved but commercially ignored and has had to make his way largely without industry support.

I imagine he scrapes by....  ;) ;D (and comments like that illustrate exactly the problem he's up against, poor love).

I actually reckon Zak might be the winner of child of iconic musician who has somehow made his own and highly successful way in the same business award....

I just like Kula Shaker's music , enjoy Crispin's vocals and song writing and love seeing them live. (Plus I thought Haley Mills was the bee's knees when I was a nipper - Parent trap, Pollyanna etc).  I couldn't give a monkeys about spiritualism, if he uses it as a base to inspire joyful English psychedelic raga rock:-  good show!

I am sure a lot of there stuff is tongue in cheek - look at the song Hari Bol on K 2.0 (released 2016) about the wine gums Harybo, 0k I know its actually Sanskrit, meaning chant the name of the god Hari, but I prefer to interpret the lyrics are about a sucky sweet.

Well, what a surprise. This turned up in the post and clearly necessitated time to be put aside for a serious listening. So this afternoon I took a long sit down and gave it a glistening, listening thought which turned out to be this…
Listening to Dr Strangely Strange has, for me, always been like going to church, a particularly acid-drenched church set deep in the countryside where, as one of their songs put it, ‘time delivers a handstand and the colours are ever so bright.’ So the arrival of these Radio Sessions which included some scarce Strangelies songs immediately drew me in…
Beginning with a rehearsal of Sign on My Mind, from the Heavy Petting sessions, this one is just as groovy and essential as the album version, with slightly less fluid whistle and gorgeous guitar from Gary Moore. Then we’re into a couple of tracks from John Peel’s Top Gear (6/6/70), Ashling and Mary Malone of Moscow. The sound quality leaves something to be desired, but that desire is far outweighed by the existence of the tracks at all, and Strangelies fans will love them for what and how they are.
Then to a recording for In Concert (1/11/70) of Frosty Mornings, Horse of a Different Hue, On the West Cork Hack, Ballad if the Wasps and Sweet Red Rape. Again, the sound quality isn’t brilliant but that’s not why we’re here is it; listen to Coldplay if you want that sort of nonsense. These are delightfully ramshackle versions of songs we’ve come to know and love, musical diaries of events in the lives of the Strangelies some, I’m happy to report, the result of playing out whilst on acid (Goulding explains further in the notes). Frosty Mornings has a slightly different ending, Horse canters along nicely before going delightfully jazz-prog-folk-tastic and fading out. On the West Cork Hack stars the trippy Howson Phonofiddle and Ballad of the Wasps is as tremendous as ever, a rollocking acid parable and cautionary tale if ever there was one. The final track from this session, Sweet Red Rape is another Strangelies rarity and not on either of their original albums, inviting you to join them in downtown Belmullet in a sort of mutated blues about, well, the title of the song. As with Horse this one rocks out toward the end and never has bird seed been so celebrated!
Then just one track from Dutch Radio (9/4/71). But what a track! It’s Gave My Love An Apple, from Heavy Petting and Booth forewarns the audience that Ivan is going to take a solo. Radically different from the album version, I laughed all the way through; cod gospel? psychedelic country? faux-wop? Pub singalong? It’s all there! Gay & Terry Woods too and Ivan ‘wah wah’ Pawle’s solo. It’s all joyous, life affirming stuff played with enthusiasm and humour.
The album finishes with another track from Dutch radio (20/3/71) and it’s another Sign on My Mind. Can you have too many Signs? No, obviously not. This one has some band chatter as it slides into the song itself, with added bongos! As usual I felt the urge to dance to the skies as the boys wailed away, passing on the open secret that, as we all know, things aren’t what they would appear (but nor are they different as the Zen saying has it).
But there’s more! A brief group chat, typically surreal, funny and self deprecating, about the origins of the band and its name. Then it stopped. Awwww.
So, it’s perhaps not the album you’d choose if you were trying to persuade someone that the Strangelies are one of the best bands ever (your mileage may vary, mine never does) but if you’re a fan this is essential stuff. And if you’re not a fan start with Heavy Petting and work backwards and forwards. Strangelies chronicler Adrian Whittaker has done a marvellous job in sourcing these tracks and ensuring they see the light of day and has provided detailed sleeve notes in the accompanying booklet
The only sad thing about this release is that I don’t think it’s available to mere mortals until October, but that’ll be here before you know it"

I haven't heard of Folk  Heritage Records, so most of the artists featured are new to me. Still, it makes a change from folk compilations where I already have more than half the tracks. 🙂

I have heard some of these acts and those I have, I have enjoyed, but often I understand why they never broke through, despite their talent, in a lot of cases. I find moments from them on albums, but barely enough to fill an album and I skip through what I have of theirs to specific tracks. Still others may find more.

Thinking the way  I do about CD reissues as a whole,  I wonder how many of the tracks on such a compilation are taken from master tapes, and how many are needle drops from the  scarce albums?

How many reissues are done from needle drops? I thought that was just a pirating technique. Am I being naive?

To some degree.  A lot of comps are from needle drops...but sometimes that all that remains and it's not necessarily underhand in any way.

Some legit releases are needle drops, if tapes are unavailable or lost.  Record companies are not obliged to say 'buyer beware' in these cases. They will however generally tell us if original tapes have been used.

This Bert BBC box looks very good, but the price is pretty eye watering...especially for the download.

34p/track for the download.  Not so bad really.  But you still have to really want it, I guess.

I preordered, as they say now, this on 4LP. Thinking the CD version might have been a better buy, as you get lots more material.  The extra stuff  you get as downloads with the 4LP  version, but I've not much use for downloads.

Sure they'd let you change...Earth are a good company?  I'd go for the CD set if it was £20 less.  Personally I think the download cost is outrageous, but maybe I'm out of touch.

Well, I have.  £67.41 on Am*z*n.  Sorry, but that comparison with what Earth are charging is ridiculous.

Compare also the amazon price £79 for the 4LP with  Earth's.price.

I suspect they're not able to negotiate a lower price, which of course Amazon can due to economies of scale.

But it is a LOT extra  :-\

Amazon don't negotiate anything, they just demand a huge discount (up to 70%) off the publisher/record company etc.  One just puts up or shuts up. Even Colin who put it together seemed surprised by how much Earth are charging.  I wonder if they're effectively charging for the digital release as well as you get that through Bandcamp...but whatever, it does seem very disjointed.
