£3.99 for the Stills & Collins cd Everybody Knows at HMV yesterday. Picked up Karine Polwart's latest album too. And a Queen dvd.

I had a look through their vinyl section but I can't bring myself to buy LPs any more. Feels like I've been there, done that. Last year I bought a new turntable and although I always thought I'd taken good care of my records over the years, this new turntable is showing just how worn out many of them now are. Quite depressing really.

I wasn't quite sure about the whole concept of the Band of Love album, but was prepared to give it a punt at that price, and after one listening I have to say it isn't half bad!  It probably helps that, apart from some of the real standards on there, I don't know the songs really well.

My experience with vinyl has been the opposite. I was playing some Elton John albums before Christmas that I had not played in many years (admittedly not the better ones. It was the run of albums from A Single Man to Reg Strikes Back, with the exception of Too Low For Zero which I have on CD) and was surprised to find how well they played. One album jumped on one track and I think that was just a bit of dirt in the groove. My problem with new vinyl is the cost of it. I would like to buy more, especially if it comes with a download code. I have bought the latest album by Savoy and the reconfigured double album version of ELO's Secret Messages during 2018 but mostly I can get 3 CDs for the cost of a single vinyl album so the pricing is prohibitive.

Is there not an alternate view that people which have donated these CD's are expecting that they achieve the best possible value for the charity rather than let them go for next to nothing ... only a view from someone who has sold on CD's bought from charity shop at big profit?

All I ever seem to see in charity shops round here are One Direction and Enrique Iglesias!

That's a debate for the charity, not for the buyer.  Imho.

It's the market rate in town. A couple of shops try selling them for a quid for a while, but have to have sales at 50p in order to clear some of them. DVDs are between 20p and 50p. Books similar, although one shop has them at a quid.
If the CDs had been, say, a quid, I would have bought the Steve Earle/TVZ/Guy Clark one, and perhaps an Arcade Fire one, the rest would have stayed there. As it is the Wolfstone CD had been there since October or maybe September trying to tempt me and I finally succumbed.

I've given loads of stuff to charity shops and it's as much about wanting it to be used again as expecting much money to be made.

Oakengates is a smallish market town and there are seven charity shops and another one opening soon. Prices have to be competitive.

I think in the next year or two some charity shops will stop donations of DVDs and CDs because there isn't enough demand, except at very cheap prices (and not always then).

They have obviously had a donation from a "proper" music fan, or maybe more than one. As well as those I bought I left some by Steve Earle, the Coral, Bruce, and Tom Waits because I already had them, and also several by The Fall, Morrisey, The The, Manu Chao, Arab Strap, William Orbit to name a few. It's normally boy bands and pan pipes.  :D

Having given Roger Daltery's "As Long As I Have You" album a listen on Spotify I found they were selling it half price in HMV on vinyl so I thought I'd treat myself. I know I said elsewhere on here recently that I couldn't bring myself to buy any more vinyl but old habits die hard.

It's almost a Who album as Pete plays guitar on most of the tracks and Roger credits him as being the reason why the album got finished, interrupted as it was by Daltrey's health problems. And Andy Cutting plays melodion on the final track.

The guy who served me assured me that no store closures or redundancies have been announced and not to believe what the press are saying about HMV's imminent demise. I hope he's right.

As a regular frequenter of charity shops in different towns I think the pricing is pretty consistent across the country. My home town has around 15 charity shops at present. Most sell CDs, DVDs, books for between 50p and £1.00, some do 3 for 2 offers as well.

The exceptions tend to be those charities which run specialist book/music shops. I need to declare an interest here as I am a volunteer in my local Oxfam bookshop, specifically looking after donations of vinyl. Our prices tend to be higher, typically £1.99 for a CD vinyl LP or paperback book but can be significantly higher if item is of value. Donated items are researched and prices on sites such as eBay, Amazon and more specialist sites (e.g. Discogs for vinyl/CDs) are checked to gain an idea of market value and a fair sale price set to maximise income. Obviously this is largely a question of time and resource that a particular shop has when it comes to evaluating donations. For many it is no doubt easier to adopt a standard price across the board, which can be great news for those who have picked up the kind of bargains posted here over the years, myself included.

Interestingly, with the increased 'hipness' of vinyl, I am seeing some charity shops selling old LPs at significantly higher prices than I would consider they are actually worth.

My main gripe with these specialist charity shops (especially Oxfam, I'm afraid) is that they take very little (both books and records) account of condition, and when they do, they generally get it wrong.  A Fine copy of the first Fairport album is not worth the same amount of money as a Good copy.  But they consistently (and frustratingly) seem to think it is.  I'm sure your shop is the exception to my rule!

Amen to that. A trashed coy of a rare or rareish record is not worth the 'book price'.

If anyone happens to visit Badlands in Chelt, there's a copy of the CD release of RTs Strict Tempo in their sale section. 50% off £12.99. I'd have bought it, but I already have a copy.

Anyone with a passing interest in up-tempo, feelgood, bluegrass flavoured jam band music could do worse than downloading "Travelogue 2018" a monster Nugs.net freebie (mp3) from the fab String Cheese Incident. Four CDs worth culled from last year's shows, coming in at 4.5+ hours. An 'andsome bargain indeed.  :)

Sarah Jarosz's Undercurrent and Rhiannon Giddens' Freedom Highway for 7 and 8 quid respectively and they're doing 2 books for a fiver so I picked up Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell and Billy Bragg's Still Suitable for Miners.

I couldn't remember exactly where I'd heard Sarah Jarosz before but I'm glad I bought her cd as it's a fine collection of songs. Her voice reminds me of someone like Alison Krauss or Gillian Welch. That sort of sound anyway.

She was on the main stage at Shrewsbury FF a couple of years ago, if you were there or watched the live feed.

Nope I wasn't there and don't think I saw the live feed. I think it was a video or two I saw last year of the band she's in called I'm With Her. Again, I saw their cd in HMV but just knew I'd seen the name somewhere. I wasn't having a good time remembering things as I knew I'd heard a track by Rhiannon Giddens on the latest Songlines cd but couldn't remember the name of the group she's in and couldn't get online on my phone to google her. That group is called Her Native Daughters which also features Allison Russell of Birds of Chicago.

Nick Drake's box set Tuck Box for £20 from a flea market, still shrinkwrapped. Currently £120 on Amazon. Not bad I got £300 for my vinyl copy of Five Leaves Left a few years ago.

Nice one!  I was pleased to pick up an 'as new' copy for about twice that a few months back.  

Picked up a clutch of pre-loved Kate Rusby cd's for uder a tenner, "Awkward Annie", "Little Lights", "Underneath The Stars"  & "The Girl Who Couldn't Fly". Nestled under the tray of the former was Ian Anderson's "The Secret Language of Birds". Something I would not have gone out of my way for, but "one man gathers what another man spills".  :)

I always thought she was destined for bigger things , maybe she still is ! Or maybe mainstream success  would have came at too high a price , the compromises required etc

At last, after months of being jealous of other people's charity shop finds, I've finally found a bargain in a local charity shop. Not earth shattering, but finding Bellowhead's 'Matachin' for 99p amongst the Michael Buble, One Direction and Spice Girl's stuff that usually fills our local shops has made my day. (I'm easily pleased)

James/Eno "Wah Wah" and (since they're on at Cropredy this year and I thought I'd better get to know at least some of their stuff!) the Waterboys' "Fisherman's Blues". £1.50 each.

CD tent in The Field: LAU [remixed] (£7), and - an unmarked/untitled CD on the Venture label for £1 that had an interesting and slightly familiar sleeve design... I later Googled the catalogue no (DSRM1) to discover it's "Ember Glance - The Permanence of Memory" by David Sylvian & Russell Mills.  Now wonder it looked familiar - I already have a copy (the full 96-page photobook + CD edition), which was also a bargain buy from a record shop in St. Helier, Jersey many years ago.

And from discogs: £2.50 for Sarathy Korwar's "My West is your East" 2CD set of live interpretations of pieces by Alice Coltrane, Shakti etc.

Eliza Carthy's Red Rice picked up from the Reading Oxfam music shop for £3.99.  Nearly bought the David Gilmour Live from Gdansk double CD + DVD set for the same price too, but the cover was pretty duffed in and when I took it to the desk the discs were as well, so passed on it.  Shame.  Would have been a real bargain otherwise!

I think there's 4 in total, all of which I have (on CD).  A fifth was mentioned, but not sure if it ever got released.  Sadly, there was all sorts of bad vibes about the series because one or two of the artists (and I do mean one or two) have rather challenging political opinions....

Yep, Far Right stuff...there's a weird crossover point with some of the very furthest reaches of the Wyrd Folk people.  It's a tiny minority, of course... e.g. Tony Wakeford of Sol Invictus was a member of the BNP in the 80's...and has never really renounced such views.  I was going to say it's not black and white (hmmm) but, really, it is.

Hmm, a quick google of Mr Wakeford doesn't make for particularly pleasant reading does it.  Still, as you say, a minority, and it shouldn't be allowed to invalidate, or whatever a better word would be, the remainder of the music.

Last week, in USA... Hendrix @ Woodstock for $5 (new) in a Walmart (!), and 2 CDs @ 50c each (!!) from a thrift store in Moab: Herbie Hancock "Dis is da drum" and Dubtribe Soundsystem "Bryant Street". Only managed to listen to the first few tracks of Herbie so far, fair to say a bit of a curate's egg - some nice jazz/funk but a couple of iffy raps - by guests, not Herbie!

My local HMV in Hull  reduced their last pink vinyl "Unhalfbricking" to £9.99 late last week , certainly a better price than their £22.99
Worth checking the stores as they seem to have quite a few reductions on , presumably to clear space for big sellers in the run up to Christmas.

Most of the HMV stores have a few copies of "Unhalfbricking" on pink vinyl for that price. I was off work last week and it could be picked up in Leeds (which I did!),Lincoln,Doncaster or York.

It's not a bad sale as I also got the Rolling Stones "Rock And Roll Circus" triple vinyl,reduced from £57.99 to £24.99!

Whatever you might have expected from a new Tickell album, this probably isn’t it. It may even turn off some longstanding fans… but it deserves to attract a lot of new ones too.

I noticed they had copies in my local HMV too. I think it might be a sign of the failure of World Album Day as much as of the store. I have a nice black reissue from a year or 2 back so the pink LP didnt tempt me.  8)

Camel - Snow Goose (+extras), Fleetwood Mac - 50 Year's Don't stop 3 CD comp (sealed), Penguin Cafe Orchestra Concert Programme 2 CD (£3 in total); Yes Speak 35 2 DVD comp (£1.50); Patrick Humphries Richard Thompson Strange Affair (£4)...oh, and a rather more expensive (but still well under half it's actual value) New Naturalist.  Plus more coffee and GF cake than any man can truly want.  I do like Bridport.

Strangely, I had that Camel CD delivered today too. I bought it on vinyl a while ago, but following recommendations from this here bunch of folk, I've bought that, Mirage and Moonmadness on CD.
My bargain was buying a second hand copy of Dylan's 'Albert Hall' gig online for £2 and getting a nice sealed un-played one.

I'm 59 this year and bought my first ever Beatles album today.

I was in a charity shop when a bloke brought his entire Beatles / Lennon / Harrison etc CD collection in ... I'll have them £1 a piece £22.

He then goes out and brings in Hendrix / Zeppelin and Pink Floyd collections ... all in £54 result!

A rare case of being in the right place at the right time. I happened to be browsing Ebay when a a brand new sealed copy of the Deluxe edition of Bob Dylan's More Blood More Tracks appeared for under £50 from a UK based seller. This was massively over priced on release but patience has been rewarded.

By contrast I have also picked up a copy of Triplicate for under a fiver, which may still be considerably more than it is worth, We shall see. It fills a gap in my collection.

Talking Elephant are doing an offer on a bunch of Ashley Hutchings and related bands (Albions, Rainbow Chasers, etc) albums, so if anyone wants to get hold of some of his back catalogue, there's some decent albums in there for only a fiver.  I picked up the Dylancentric album, My Land Is Your Land and his Beginnings of FC show.

Just to clarify - are the CDs still signed?

Of the three I bought, only one was.  And seemed to be signed 'to Adrei', so I assume that had been left over from a previous signing session when someone didn't collect their CD?!  The other two were just in cardboard sleeves, wrapped in plastic, so couldn't have been signed easily anyway.

Tony Banks' 4 CD compilation A Chord Too Far is available on Google Play for £5.99 (https://play.google.com/store/music/album/Tony_Banks_A_Chord_Too_Far?id=B74m756lhnfmqtpwnfhmc46er6m).  Actually there are 4 tracks missing compared to the physical version, all from his two more 'classical' albums on a different label, so I assume it is a rights/permissions issue.  Since I have one of those anyway, it didn't bother me too much.

Listening now and enjoying it on the whole.  There are a couple of tracks on there with Fish on vocals.  Was this a nod to those who said that early Marillion were Genesis clones?!

The Police, in a box, all the studio albums plus a CD of versions, etc. £4.99 in HMV Cheltenham. I was slightly tempted by the Hot Rats box at a little over half price... but £75 for 6 CDs is still, I think, over the top. It's rumoured HMV is again in trouble, and may well be selling off a lot from its overstocked warehouses... worth keeping an eye on??

Got myself a fistful today there are mostly £2.99 with a nice range to choose from including Richard & Linda, Mister Marley, John Martyn, Traffic etc.
My haul included Rosanne Cash, Lee Perry, Courtney Pine and the two Mark Knopler CDs I didn't possess.

We went to town in search of a large plastic box thinking of going to Wilko or similar. However passing by a charity shop we were tempted to go in. Of course we found a large plastic box of the type we wanted. It was priced at £15 but contained nearly 50 X-Files DVDs containing 4 episodes each. How long is social distancing going to last?

I have had the Byrds set for a few years now and I visit it regularly.
The only problem I have with it are some of the bonus tracks added on.
Sometimes it is obvious why certain tracks never made it to the original albums.
Less can indeed be more!

Those two are definite bargains - haven't got the Jude one, but I bet that's a good one too.

I'm the opposite - I think The Byrds had more gems hidden away in the vaults than most other bands.

 I found her albums a bit "easy listening" in my younger days and haven't heard them since I took them back to the record library circa 1990. Be nice to reassess them. Chris Rea's "Blue Guitars" 11CD (+ 1 DVD) boxed set for £15, used but seemingly in good condition from a stall in Gloucester market. All disks appear OK to the naked eye.  I've been thinking of getting this for some time - but not at the inflated prices I've seen on various sites.  I nearly missed it - I was browsing the CD shelves and overheard a conversation between 2 young ladies and the chap looking after the stall - they were asking him whether "Driving Home for Christmas" was on the album; I assumed they were looking at an LP, but as I turned, I realised what they were holding. The chap didn't know, and as there's no track listing on the cover, they put it back. Cue swoop...  ;)

Prog Magazine has a 3 issues for £3 (followed by a quarterly - aka 2 issues - for £13.50 or something) offer all over Facebook.  I can't see how this makes any business sense whatsoever, but I felt duty bound whilst there are still a few music mags left around to enjoy.

Desperate measures, methinks.  Last hope of netting a wider readership.

Just had a subscription renewal notice from Uncut offering half price subs if you pay by 6 monthly standing order.

This is where I wonder how those 6 issues for £6 offers actually help them.  The vast majority won't renew at a reasonable rate.  Too many people are too used to buying heavily discounted mags.  I can't imagine they'll last much longer...

Does £8 for a new-looking LP count in these days of Vinyl Renaissance? Methinks so ... Anyway, it was the one album from Jackie McAuley's Poor-Mouth, "Gael Force". Mr McAuley was the guitarist for Van Morrison's Them and then formed the duo Trader Horne with Judy Dyble. Anyway, the LP in question sounds rather like Horslips meets Chris Rea ... definitely recommended if you like Celtic rock. Anyway, do patronise your local record shop if you are lucky enough to have one - the joy of discovery will always beat surfing the net ;)

Totally agree , whilst HMV have their moments , we are lucky in Hull to have an indie "Wrecking Ball Music" directly opposite HMV , with a wide selection of new vinyl and secondhand , plus new books , in store signings ,a cafe,  and a music venue upstairs with a bar .Proper gem of a place , great place to browse and buy , so if you unlucky enough to find yourself in Hull at a loose end .....

Funnily enough that's the one out of the three First National Band albums that I consider the least essential, but it's all about personal taste. I very much recommend that you hunt down a copy of the third record, Nevada Fighter, if and when you decide you want more.

I think it's worth it.  It sees them moving out of the more keyboard-led sounds of the 80s back towards more guitar-led stuff.  But if you've never heard any, it might be worth sampling it on Spotify or whatever before buying.

The one album it doesn't include is their final studio album Clockwork Angels, which is excellent.

Thanks I have heard that actually.  I "quite like it".  I suppose I have probably heard some of the material I'm saying I've never heard as I've listened to some live stuff.  Only time I ever saw them was on the Signals tour.  At that price, it might be worth a punt..

Cherry Red have 20% off all of their folk and reggae titles during May. It is mostly reggae to be fair but there are titles by Iain Matthews, Steeleye Span and Pentangle. I have just picked up a Swarb anthology and, bizarrely, compilations by Hotlegs and Rachel Sweet which are included for some reason.

As a fan of both folk and reggae, I need to have a shufti at this.

Oh yes, get that one. It's very good. Not as good as the proper albums of the same period, but still good.

I had a look. Much of it is late 60s/turn of the decade stuff. Pre-roots. I'm no expert on that era. I'm sure there are plenty of great things here, but none that I know well enough to recommend.

Must admit to having very few Macca studio albums in my collection so I thought I'd make a couple of purchases off eBay including 'Flowers in the Dirt' which arrived today. It's the 2017 remastered edition with a bonus disc of demos. I chose that one as I saw him at Wembley on his 89/90 world tour and the set list included a few numbers from that album.

There's a Fairport connection in that DM drummed on one track though the main guest on the album was Elvis Costello. Trevor Horn and David Gilmour are also in the credits.

I rarely follow up ads on Facebook, but did at the end of last week for an ad for classic rock albums from Rock Review records at £3.99 each, and ended up buying the following, all at that price:

It's not often that I say this but the demos disc is well worth a listen. It's Paul and Elvis doing acoustic versions of some of the songs from the album plus a few others. Just them singing together with guitar or piano accompaniment. Giving it a second listen.  8)

I'm lucky to have a couple of good ones locally. They stock all the performers you mention (along with things like Dodgy's Free Peace Suite and The Thrills' So Much For The City, which seem to be compulsory for charity shops, in my neck of the woods) but they also often have gems at reasonable prices, happily.

Interestingly, cassettes are starting to overtake CDs, price-wise, in a few of them.

I'm interested in this development, which I've certainly not noted around Cheshire/Liverpool/Manchester.  Where are you?  What sorts of charity shops?

The Al Stewart boxed set is £500 on amazon, but only  £325 at Burning Shed. In relative terms, I think the latter sounds like a bargain. 🙂

Based in West Yorkshire but I spend a lot of time in Cumbria and South Wales. It's mostly been in Oxfam (especially the specialist shops) that I've noticed the price of cassettes overtaking CDs but there are a couple of places in the Lake District and Swansea where I've spotted a similar trend.

Just adding an observation to the charity shop discussion : I certainly find the odd gem on my occasional trawls, but I find it alarming that the majority of cd's on offer (apart from the obvious landfill) are albums made in the last 25 years. No "classics" to be found.

Potential old f**t remark : does this mean that modern music is rubbish, that popular music's best years are behind it ? Has pop eaten itself ? Or is this an indication of how people buy music these days : purchase cd, rip the best tracks, donate to chazza ?

I've got hundreds of CDs stacked up at home from the early 1980s to today. Love to sell them off but

a) 200 or so are from the USA so their barcodes don't work for the "we buy your CDs" sites

b) Even when they do recognise the barcodes, they offer me pennies.

Can't be arsed.

I bought from Burning Shed and the service was excellent. You do have to pay delivery but it's only £8. Amazon , when it's in stock!,was £590 when I looked. My best mate has also bought it. Believe me it's great.

I tried to sell some books on Music Magpie , I'd filled  large box and was only up to £1.50 offered. Wasn't worth the strain on my back!

Oxfam are by far the most expensive of the Charity Shops. You'll never buy anything from there that qualifies for this thread.

I find that I'm more likely to find something of interest in our Oxfam book and cd shop whereas other charity shops tend to mainly display pop cds from the last 20 years or so, I suppose partly because they have less space to display cds.

I volunteered at a BHF shop several years back and discovered some real gems - it looked like someone had left their cd collection to the shop. So there were albums by Dylan and all sorts of other 60s/70s artists. I don't know what happened to them all. The shop manager wanted me to concentrate on the books and dvds as presumably they sold more of those.

Records are expensive, locally. CDs & cassettes, much less so.

Mine is as yet unopened, but I look forward to it, Nick.

I already have the Rick Rubin "American" albums, but, having looked at reviews of the Legend set, I spotted there's another set of mainly unreleased tracks from those later sessions - "Unearthed" - and I've managed to find a copy in near mint condition for £35.

That's probably all the Cash albums I'll ever want.....

One of my favorite albums is Blood on the Tracks. Ryan Adams has recorded the whole album and it's free to download from his website ditto Nebraska.

My conclusion, for what it's worth, is that this is by quite some margin the very worst version of Tangled Up in Blue I've ever heard (and I speak as someone who has been a long time fan of Ryan).  I'm not entirely sure I'll get any further!

You may want to re-visit this some of the tracks towards the end are jolly good particularly the extended acoustic jams.

Nebraska on the other hand is pants.

erm, not sure if this really IS a bargain, but...

I bought a tombola ticket at a recent event (50p), which turned out to be a winner - a limited choice of prizes left -  mostly cosmetics and the like, but there was a bottle of coconut liqueur, and a wrapped box of approx CD size marked "mystery music".  So I chose the latter...

On removing the wrapping paper, I discovered a sealed white box bearing the legend STUMM433...

It's a 5CD set of artists on or associated with the Mute label recording their interpretations of John Cage's 4'33" - at a stroke becoming the most bizarre inclusion in my collection.  Hours of (not quite) silence.

But, is it music? It's sound, maybe even noise...  [to quote the Floyd's groovy Pict "'ere, that's pretty avant-garde, isn't it?"]

Ha Ha!..Now that could easily turn out to be bargain of the year! :)

Just a little bit of dedicated listening & patience now required... ;D

The only tenuous link I spotted: "In 1847, the Band of Hope was founded in Leeds, with the stated aim of saving working class children from the perils of drink".  Sounds like the sort of thing Tam would be well aware of.

Meanwhile, I picked up recently: "White Noise - An Electric Storm" (2007 remaster) and "Johnny Boy Would Love This - A Tribute To John Martyn" (2011 2CD set) - £4.99 each

The White Noise album, being a collaboration between Delia Derbyshire, David Vorhaus and Brian Hodgson, was highly innovative and still sounds very modern, in some ways. Absolutely love "Here Come The Fleas"!

George wasn't always best served by his producers in my opinion, despite the praise heaped on ATMP. Some of the songs for me were lost in the big sound that Spector loved so this set with many demos looks wonderful. The fragile voice, fab guitar playing, is where I think George really shone.

Haven't managed to listen to it yet - too busy preparing for Cropredy! - but while out buying last-minute provisions this afternoon, the charity shop next door to the Co-Op had Joanna Newsom's "Have One On Me" 3CD set for 50p. I've never knowingly heard anything by JN, so whatever she sounds like, it'll be a surprise.  I must remember to put ATMP at the top of the pile if I buy any media at the festival....

There have been a few ludicrous FC related bargains on eBay recently, but I think this takes the biscuit...I'm annoyed at myself for not going in for that one!

Realised to my horror that we are going to Cornwall in the van for a couple of weeks and, with the nights drawing in, and needing our TV and DVD, and there will be an unnecessary amount of egg chasing for the grossly overweight on our screens. No problem 6 DVDs for a quid in total from a charity shop.

For some reason I never did get around to buying the Swarb Free Reed set, although I have the Fairport, RT and Cropredy releases which get regular revisits. It seems a lot of love went into the creation of these boxed sets, and I still enjoy the experience of finding hidden gems and browsing through the booklets.

Who is he?

I love Daniel Johnson's stuff.

He is classified as an "Outsider" musician whose music was admired by the likes of Kurt Cobain, Tom Waits, the Flaming Lips and Sonic Youth.

There is a documentary film about his life, death and works called "The Devil and Daniel Johnson' (it was available free on Amazon Prime a while ago) which is a fascinating viewing of a tortured creative.

An appearances towards the latter part of his life was captured on video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkczI1-be1k a really moving and fragile performance with Glen Hansard.  His solo recordings and performances, like so many outsider musicians are pretty raw and sometimes difficult for people to get into - I think this reveals what a great song writer he was.

I'm glad somebody's got the patience to respond to a "who is he" query like that.  I just mumbled "FFS, just google it (or don't)" under my breath ;) ;D

I saw the Daniel Johnson documentary some years ago. It was very interesting and quite moving.
I also visited a very small exhibition of his paintings and drawings. I don't know how well known he is for these.

That Celtic Airs and Ballads album is a good one - I bought it many years ago from a Past Times shop (remember them?).  I also have the Broadside Band's English Country Dances from Playford's Dancing Master, 1651-1703, which is good too.  Seems like an excellent haul.

£2.99 from the local Oxfam for Kate Bush's Before The Dawn live album. And then picked up Green On Red's Gas Food Lodging and Green On Red EP on one disc from a stall in the market, together with 2 UFO albums for a fiver.

Couple of jazz samplers for 50p each, and Rush's 3CD "Different Stages - Live" set for a quid.  Never been a fan of Rush, never really listened to them much. so thought I'd give 'em a chance!

Can't understand that... but then I would probably say very much the same thing about some of the bands you're into, so chacun à son goût.

I saw them 41 years ago and enjoyed them but when I listen to anything but the most classic of classic material I tend to wonder why they're playing 7 notes when only 3 would suffice.  I think that a lot about music, mind, so it's not to be taken seriously (hides King Crimson and VDGG material under the bed quickly so nobody accuses him of being a hypocrite)...

My uni roommate was a massive Rush fan, and i was educated/tormented by them for a few years, and saw them live twice. I respect the musicianship but never quite got into them beyond  some of the basics. Occasionally I will dust off the compilation I have by them but I seem to hit the skip button eventually…sorry to the Rush fans!

Many years ago in a article, one of my musical heroes Dave Gregory of XTC, mentioned "Inner Mounting Flame" as a big influence on him in his formative years, which immediately prompted me to go out and buy a copy...

I still have it and have tried several times to get into it, but have so far failed big time! ;D

We have a local band called Greg Murray and The Seven Wonders, who play at Bank holiday festivals , small venues etc , and have played at The Acoustic Festival. Many would consider them a party band but they are a cut above due to Gregs outstanding original songs. I enjoy them immensely. I was therefore chuffed to find a 2005 solo album by Greg in a local charity shop. On getting it home I was intrigued to see a list of "thanks to" including one John Kettle as producer. Of course I had to follow this up. John remembers the album and played quite a bit on it himself , and has asked for a copy. Quite a find. The album is pretty good too , as, by the way, is John's latest excursion with Phil Odgers on The Songs of Phil Ochs. Will have to discuss further when we see Merry Hell twice next month.

Greg is great.  I have an album and a triple album download of his.  All superb stuff.

Simple Minds "Live in the City of Light" for £1.60, and a CD+DVD by Dolennu (multi-tracked & looped violins, synths & drums) for £1.10, both from charity shops in Bridgnorth on the way home.  The former because it's got the late John Giblin on bass; the latter is reminiscent in parts of pieces by Ed Alleyne-Johnson, Ric Sanders and Don "Sugarcane" Harris, with a smattering of Jerry Goodman and Jean-Luc Ponty.

A huge chunk of my collection came from there, after finding it on a school trip in early 1978, for 40 years, give or take.
I'd take a trip, buy a load of stuff, hang out on the beach for a bit, then come home.

If I didn't already own the 2CD version of "Liquid Tension Experiment 3", I'd have been tempted by a 2CD + Bluray version...

I didn't know COB was still around.  Way back in the past I used to buy from them mailorder to save a little and avoid going 'into town'.  Thinking about  it now it wasn't a great service as returns were a hassle and their packaging was poor, by today's standards.

I did mail order with them for a while, I never had any issues with that.
I took great joy in looking through the list whenever it came out.
They opened branches in Bangor, which I visited, and Wrexham, which I didn't, but only the original remains.
The first thing I bought from there was an Italian picture sleeve single of Pink Floyd's Point Me At The Sky c/w Careful With That Axe, Eugene.
I can't remember the last thing, but I've got a few thousand albums now, I only had about a dozen then.

I too have fond memories of COB mail order and their long stock lists  , no recollections of packaging issues , only item I know I still have is "Adventure" by Television on red vinyl , bought from them in 1979 for £2.29 , a bargain

I love Decade.  Had it really early on, so I still hear (in my head) some of it in that order...

As to how many copies of an album you want...well, that's up to the individual.
I have, off the top of my head, eight copies of Liege And Lief - vinyl, pink island label vinyl, misc CD copies with bonus tracks, cassette (yay!), and as part of box sets.
I have twenty copies each of Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here - one of the latter purely because it has a different shot of the burning guy on the sleeve - for much the same reasons as L&L.
I have recently bought additional copies of around 150 CDs I already have, just to play in the car.

Sort of a bargain, depending on taste.

In my bid to explore the work of Phil Ochs I found a twofer of his first two albums on Ebay packaged with a twofer of the first two Tim Buckley albums. All four albums for £12.

I am entirely unfamiliar with Tim Buckley's work though I of course know his story and his reputation. Unfortunately, after an initial listen, these two albums are for the most part not for me.

Tim Buckley albums vary enormously as to style and quality. The debut isn't  the most interesting album. I have a few of his , and really the only one I've found disappointing is Greetings From LA .  Try to hear Happy Sad and Goodbye and Hello. If neither of these grabs you he may not be for you.  

If Gub grabbed a twofer of the first two Tim albums, then he's already heard Goodbye and Hello and it didn't do it for him.

I'm the same - don't really have the Buckley appreciation gene.

I found Tim Buckley to be, at the same time, difficult and genius. My 'in' was Dream Letter, which to me is an exceptional live album, helped along by the presence of Danny Thompson. My 'out' has been Starsailor which I just cannot get to grips with even though it contains Song To The Siren.

Starsailor is the one I haven't got to yet. As always, there are some people who say it was his best album. I think it was his last.

My entry point was Lorca, which I heard a long time ago.  Strange really as it's a difficult album and now having heard others I don't think it represents his best work.
Happy Sad is a beautiful and seductive album imo, and Goodbye and Hello is all over the place in terms of style, but way ahead of its time.
I also have Sefronia on CD. I'm undecided about this one- again it's very varied, but not always in a good way  . The CD doesn't do it any favours either.
The 'sex funk'  of Greetings from LA  leaves me unmoved.

I don't think there's anybody on earth who would say 'Lorca' was a representative TB work, but I think it's a great one.  Weird funky cocaine music...what's not to love?

I adore the entire cannon of work...there's something in all of them and at least 3 absolute stone cold classics...

In the 1990s I used to pick up books at Spitalfields Market for dirt cheap prices, including a complete set of P.G. Wodehouse for a tenner.

Those books came from reviewers at a prominent newspaper. God knows what they reviewed because even the newest books were untouched. The stallholder paid them by weight.

Bargain of the century.  Amazon but not THAT much more elsewhere.  17 CDs, 1 DVD.  Some of the best bonkers music in the universe.  I thought it was a bargain at twice the price
