Title: Judy Post by: Nick on July 12, 2020, 11:01:16 AM With tremendous sadness I must report, Judy Dyble has passed away. She informed us of her developing lung cancer towards the end of last year. Unfortunately she was to have only a short remission. She moved to the Churchill hospital in Oxford a few days ago and died in her sleep last night. Family have been with her throughout as best they can. They ask, please allow the family their peace. She was gifted, and she gave that gift to us. She was and remains much loved. We will miss her. Title: Re: Judy Post by: davidmjs on July 12, 2020, 11:27:39 AM This is on Facebook from David Longdon:
Tribute to Judy Dyble 13th February 1949 – 12th July 2020 12th July 2020: It is with great sadness that we announce that English singer-songwriter Judy Dyble passed away on 12th July 2020 following a long illness borne with great courage. Judy Dyble was one of the pioneers of the English folk rock scene in the 1960s, most notably as a founding member of Fairport Convention and vocalist with cult band Trader Horne. Judy largely withdrew from the music scene in the early 1970s to concentrate on her family before being invited back to the Fairport fold in 1997 for the 30th anniversary reunion at Cropredy. To Judy’s great relief, her worries, ahead of the event, disappeared as ‘suddenly the years fell away.’ Further Fairport anniversary appearances reassured Judy and showed that her passion for music had remained through the years and she made three albums with Marc Swordfish, of Astralasia, as she began a revival of her music career. This included numerous guest appearances on albums by a host of artists including, in 2017, Big Big Train. Judy went on to form a close working relationship with Big Big Train’s multi-instrumentalist frontman David Longdon. Together they will release their album Between A Breath And A Breath on 25th September 2020, with Longdon providing the music for Judy’s poignant lyrics. Two songs from the Dyble Longdon sessions which are not included on the album, Crossbones and The Daguerreotype, will be released by English Electric in the autumn subsequent to the release of Between A Breath And A Breath as a tribute to Judy Dyble via Bandcamp. The lyrics for Judy’s final collection of songs are, at times, haunting and beautifully fragile, dark in tone but neither morbid nor desperate. Specifically, The Daguerreotype looks at how the Victorians dealt with death, turning it into an art form. In accordance with Judy’s request, Crossbones and The Daguerreotype will be made available as free downloads, with listeners being encouraged to make a donation to Judy’s chosen charity, the Barley Greyhound Sanctuary (www.barleykennels.co.uk/) if they wish. David Longdon says: “It is with great sadness that I write to say that my dear friend Judy Dyble passed away this morning. Judy and I became friends during the writing and making of this album. Along the way, there was much laughter and joy - but also challenging moments. She was a woman of a certain age and she wrote articulately and unflinchingly about the autumn phase of her life.” “She dealt with her illness with incredible courage and fortitude. She suspected this album was her swan song and she gave it her all. Judy reassured me that she’d had a great life. Which indeed she did. And I will miss her greatly.” We wish to express our deepest sympathies to Judy’s family, friends and many associates from her musical career at this time. Judy’s family would like to thank her fans for their messages and good wishes on social media over the last few weeks, but at this time ask that they avoid contacting them for now as they would just like some quiet time. Title: Re: Judy Post by: Brendan on July 12, 2020, 11:34:57 AM Just read of this on Facebook, obviously very sad news for all those who are close to her and knew her, and my thoughts are with them. Someone who never stood still with her music, with the purity of her vocal a constant throughout her career. On this site she was always a welcoming voice and just ‘one of the group’ with some great insights into the band and the music industry. Thank you for everything Jude. Rest In Peace

Very sad to hear the news that Judy Dyble - original female voice of Fairport Convention, co-conspirator of Giles, Giles & Fripp pre-King Crimson, half of the duo Trader Horne with Jackie MacCauley and remarkable solo artist has passed away following a long illness. In 2009, my ex-partner and I were relief managing The Blue Posts, a pub round the corner from London's 100 Club. When Judy held a launch party for her solo album “Talking With Strangers” there, her then-manager contacted me and asked if they could use the pub's function room for a pre-gig meetup and a post-gig drink, of course. The date was set, a couple of weeks after that year's Cropredy Festival, and was a wonderful occasion. Great to meet several fans of her music, and the gig went swimmingly – Judy's band including her old Fairport cohort Simon Nicol who had also played on the album. A lovely day all round, and one of which I have fond and proud memories. Her marvellous second bite of the cherry as a musician (indeed, she named her autobiography “An Accidental Musician”) continued, and I enjoyed catching some of her mini-residency at WM Jazz in the O2 complex – she'd found the right blend of sympathetic musicians and was growing in confidence. In one of my emails to her, I joked that she'd get a taste for a touring – become a gigger. Her response was words to the effect that she enjoyed it but wouldn't go that far. But, carry on she did – culminating in an emotional appearance at Cropredy 2017 – Judy totally owning that hallowed stage with her material, her musicians and her beautiful, pastorally English voice wafting over the field. The set included a full rendition of the 20 minute epic “Harpsong” which showed off her prog-rock tendencies. And the collaborations continued with the likes of Mark Swordfish, Dodson & Fogg, The Conspirators, Sand Snowman, Big Big Train, a Trader Horne reunion and her brilliant album “Summer Dancing” with Andy Lewis – released on Acid Jazz Records. From then on I'd always refer to Judy as “Acid Jazz Records recording artist...” as opposed to “folk rocker or progger”, and this extra layer of “street cred” appealed to her wicked sense of humour ! And it continues...her collaboration with David Longdon of Big Big Train “Between A Breath & A Breath” will be released this coming September. The last time I saw Judy was exactly two years ago today, at the Anvil in Basingstoke, the occasion being a Big Big Train gig – they were warming up for their appearance at Night Of The Prog in Loreley, Germany. Lovely to see her as always, and we exchanged mirth and remarks about weight loss (my general lack of !). The news of Judy's illness came through at the tail end of 2019, however, she kept her veritable army of Facebook friends updated every stage of the way, never a grumble to be heard. Her domestic and gardening escapades and strange recipes kept everyone amused, likewise the tales and photos of her beloved rescue greyhounds. With her folk-rock foundations and her prog-rock collaborations, Judy was a one off and a truly lovable English eccentric. She will be sadly missed. Sleep well, marvellous Judy. Title: Re: Judy Post by: RobertD on July 12, 2020, 05:19:46 PM Echo what everyone else has said. This was a real gut punch to wake up to this morning. That was really touching. I’m very sad at this news

You couldn't help but think "If there were more people like Jude in the world, it would be a much better and happier place" :) Sincere condolences to her family. We were lucky to know her, even just a little bit. Title: Re: Judy Post by: John From Austin on July 12, 2020, 06:34:40 PM We had a lovely visit with Jude way back in 2007, a few days before our first Cropredy, at a little pub near Banbury. She brought with her a rescued greyhound, and most of our conversation was about this poor, high-strung dog and its recovery. She was a genuine expert on this subject, and I think she would have saved every greyhound in the world, if she could have. RIP. :(

Also at these times people are prone to enthuse about what a lovely person somebody was. Make no mistake Jude was lovely. I spoke to her once on the field, and she was even more lovely. I was a bit star struck, and spent most of the time talking to Tiggy, she didn't seem to mind. I loved her singing voice, she could teach a lot of singers in my group about phrasing and expression. She could really put meaning over in a song, and had a real ethereal quality to her voice.
Not only was she lovely to us humans, but she lived for her greyhounds. There are quite a few greyhounds who ended their lives in the most loved situation they could have because of her kindness to them. I am really sad at her passing. I'll have to think about what tracks to play in tribute to her on my next radio show. Certainly one or two songs from Talking With Strangers which I was listening to yesterday evening. I've read all the online obits (even The Star - I hope that doesn't stay in my cookies!) and this thread, plus Facebook & Twitter. She was very much loved, I don't think she had any idea how much... Judy was very kind to me when Mike was diagnosed with COPD, something she had suffered from for years. Also when I missed a deadline to get a signed copy of her book, she was more than happy to oblige. I will miss her Facebook posts, her gentle humour and her love for her dogs. I loved her twinkly tree idea and I'm creating one in my garden so when the sun shines the garden will be full of sparkles :) One comment that has stuck in my mind is "if only more people were like Judy the world would be a nicer place" and I think that says everything. I've just had a look through some messages that Jude sent me back in 2008 when I started on Diversity FM. She was so supportive and over the next few years sent me a couple of cds and the occasional mp3. Sad I never got to meet her or see her in concert. I'll have to think about what tracks to play in tribute to her on my next radio show. Certainly one or two songs from Talking With Strangers which I was listening to yesterday evening. The same here, in terms of sending her music over (to Adelaide, Australia) for me to play on air, and even agreeing to a Skype interview a few years ago. She didn't have to do any of the above, but was just the sort of person to do so anyway. I have the same problem regarding what songs to play in tribute - there is such diversity among it all that if you're choosing just a handful or so, you're going to miss something important. But we can do our best. Must admit I haven't heard of all of them. I'll have to see if I can find something by Harpo Marx. Quote Influences were Phil Ochs, Eric Anderson, The Left Banke, Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis, John Handy, Clarence Ashley, Lovin Spoonful, Judy Collins, Leonard Cohen, George Melly,The Marx Brothers....etc etc. As you can see the influences were many and varied and eclectic and I haven't even really started. we were all influenced by different musical styles and everyone was appreciative of everyone else's likes and dislikes. It was just a vast mixture of what we were listening to and how we could change it to make it distinctively FC. That's what I remember anyway. Others would say differently probably. Currently listening to Summer Dancing, which is one my favourite albums of recent years. I once mentioned that I bought it on CD and vinyl on her Facebook feed and she thanked me and called me a 'Lovely person'! My condolences to the family and friends. Just a little mistake, but it bugs me a little, for no apparent reason other than my being a detail person!

https://www.specialauctionservices.com/Auction-Calendar/2021/Music-Entertainment Jude's record collection is to be sold at auction in February. Between them, Simon and Jude amassed a vast vinyl collection, covering pretty much everything from the 60s and 70s and stretching to prog, jazz, classical and singer-songwriter. Most are to be sold as grouped collections, though there are probably a few items of particular interest for this forum: 244 (https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/special-auction-services/catalogue-id-srspe10412/lot-d8c79e03-3a23-4ae0-a840-acb60120ef28) - First press of Dark Side of the Moon 245 (https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/special-auction-services/catalogue-id-srspe10412/lot-3ce99778-3672-4e4f-8ba6-acb60120ef28) - Original release of Liege and Lief 269 (https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/special-auction-services/catalogue-id-srspe10412/lot-92803636-46a8-4761-b440-acb60120ef2d) - Original releases of Sandy and North Star Grassman and the Ravens 310 (https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/special-auction-services/catalogue-id-srspe10412/lot-b054fbbe-0471-4fb5-9649-acb60120ef2d) - Original release of Atom Heart Mother 313 (https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/special-auction-services/catalogue-id-srspe10412/lot-6f01b1a6-a17c-4753-bd23-acb60120ef2d) - Evening Blue, a really, really good looking box set from Chris Wood (the jazzer not the folkie) (If you're looking for Jude's collections of Terry Reid and Jefferson Airplane albums, to late! Title: Re: Judy Post by: Nick on January 22, 2021, 10:19:40 AM Just to clarify...are all of the entries from 1-808 from Judy's estate? It's not clear (to me). No, hers are only a part of the auction, and its not entirely clear which came from her estate and which from elsewhere. I've not figured out how to search across the Lots, and the PDF of the catalogue isn't available yet. The auction says "A number of records in the Vinyl section are from the personal collection of Judy Dyble", though I know Jude had a significant CD collection and various cassettes too which I thought were to be included in the sale. From what I've seen, the most notable individual Lots are tagged "From the personal collection of Judy Dyble" (I've linked to a few that I managed to spot). I'm pretty sure I recognise some of the compiled Lots from her collection, but I don't see them marked as such. I don't think they have mixed up items from different collections in the compiled Lots (at least, I hope they haven't!) I'll see if I can double-check. Edit: I've found you can search by name like this (https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/special-auction-services/catalogue-id-srspe10412?searchTerm=Judy+Dyble&whereToSearch=%2Fen-gb%2Fauction-catalogues%2Fspecial-auction-services%2Fcatalogue-id-srspe10412#lot-039f80cd-65d6-4fda-a2c9-acb60120ef23), which finds Lots that have been specifically tagged, but as I say, I'm sure there are other Lots that are from her collection that aren't marked.
