Title: CSN(Y)
Post by: Will S on January 20, 2023, 10:24:51 AM
Reading all the comments about the death of David Crosby, I have to (to my shame) admit that I really don't know the music of CSN (+/-Y) at all, which is a big hole in my knowledge, since I like a lot of other of the 'Laurel Canyon' stuff.  So where should I start? Is there a good compilation that gathers the best stuff together?

First CSN album, CSNY Deja Vu then maybe a selection of solo albums - Croz's If I could Only Remember My Name, Nash's Songs for Beginners, Stills' 2 maybe.  There's a massive amount of decent material after that but that should get you going.

There's also that amazing CSN boxed set from 1991. Or Crosby's Voyage comp. But as David already said, start with that first CSN album from '69, and CSNY's Déjà Vu.

Sorry to be a pedant but Will asked about a compilation. The best individual comp is probably Carry On by Stephen.

Yeah, but if there was a decent comp you'd end up buying all these anyway so why not do it properly from the off.  I'm saving him money really..you know it makes sense  ;) ;D

Buy the first two albums and make a comp out of them. Job done.

You could try the 'Daylight Again' DVD. A good selection on that.

Hmm. Crosby was far from well at that point.

Yes, but a good performance IMHO, fine harmonies.

4 Way Street is a great live album (from what I recall), necessarily drawn from more than one album.

Thanks all!

I basically mentioned a compilation because I'm cautious about loading the house with even more CDs!  But maybe I will go for those first two albums and start there.

Edit - ordered them, and added this in https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000006XVW?psc=1&smid=A23F0CM6MG3PFN&ref_=chk_typ_imgToDp because it was only £2.30 + postage!

First two albums are indeed a good place to start. Only drawback is that you won’t have the superb (and essential) Ohio which was single only. It is on the So Far compilation and there is an excellent fiery version on Four Way Street. Alternatively yo7 could treat yourself and get the Neil Young compilation Decade.

More than one performance, you mean?

Lovely versions of solo, band and previous engagement songs, although I mostly only ever listened to the first record. I’m still convinced that fade-in on side one was just so Stills could claw in some extra royalties.  ;D
