Title: 30 Years of Richard Thompson Dream Box
Post by: Shane (Skirky) on October 24, 2024, 05:06:22 PM
As has been noted on another thread here, it's been three decades since Richard Thompson's 'Watching The Dark' compilation was released - just after (but not including anything from) Rumor (sic) and Sigh.
Now, I know we're not the sort of community to spend endless hours arguing about which or whose selection better than what or whoever else's, but assuming a three decade three CD retrospective were to be issued just in time for the lucrative Christmas market, what (say) 42 songs should our compilers put together? Extra marks awarded for thematically sequenced and/or deep cuts to be included alongside 1952 VBL.
On your marks...

I think Keep Your Distance from Rumor & Sigh made it on Watching The Dark.  I remember this because I never understood why it made the cut over Vinny Black.

I refuse to drop any of the earlier material.  So there's no room for the modern rubbish.  Sorry.  ;D

Good spot. I guess at the time it was too close.

Phew. Ok, so, the last 30 years?  Christ - I'll struggle to get to 8 tracks, I imagine...they all sound the same.  But I'll give it a go.

I got to thirty. One CD of shuffly opening tracks, one of acoustic ballads and one of guitar wig-outs.

So that's 3 tracks...what about the other 27?  ;) ;D ps I'm not just being cantankerous for the sake of it (Oh, no, I'm not!) - they really do all sound the same don't they (within the differentiations that Shane's laid out above)....

Not quite sure what will make the cut, but it is bound to reflect Thompson’s current method of marketing.
It will probably be a double CD selling at £250 and will include an autograph in invisible ink.

Hmmm.  I might have to eat my own words - that's pretty damned decent actually.  Good work, Sir.

I would want to include : Bathsheba Smiles -live version and Dry my tears and move on (Mock Tudor); She said it was destiny (OKB)

Must also say that WTD is one of the finest one singer/band boxsets ever produced.

Roy Harper :  Man and Myth  (Bella Union,  2012).

Well, not completely blank,  it has an etching.  It's not common, i agree.

No, it is pretty common. I've heard about many examples. I can't name them, but then I don't buy vinyl anymore.

Joe Jackson-Big World (1986)

Wikipedia-"Jackson's intent for the recording was to capture the intensity and spontaneity of a live performance, but without the distraction of noise from the crowd. He requested that the audience remain silent while the performances of his band were recorded"

Apologies...I am completely off topic now... ;D

OK, I'll give this a go. Since Rumor & Sigh was barely represented, I will include it. I actually don't have most of the EP's, or side projects (Chrono Show, Cabaret Of Souls, etc) and live albums so this leans mostly to the official studio albums. We all know what they are but represented are-Rumor & Sigh, Mirror Blue, 13 Rivers, You, Me Us,  Sweet Warrior, Still, Ship To Shore, Old Kit Bag, Mock Tudor, Front Parlour Ballads, Electric, Dream Attic. Not included is anything from RT boxsets, The Acoustic albums,  Soundtracks or guest appearances. Two exceptions are one track apiece from Industry and 1000 Years Of Popular Music. I'd need a day to do sequencing, so these are unimaginatively done by album-

God Loves A Drunk
Why Must I Plead
1952 Vincent Black Lightning
I Can't Wake Up To Save My Life
Beeswing
I Ride In Your Slipstream
O Cinderella
The Storm Won't Come
You Can't Reach Me
Hide It Away
Dark Hand Over My Heart
The Ghost Of You Walks
Take Care The Road You Choose
Dad's Gonna Kill Me
Guns Are The Tongues
Johnny's Far Away
Fork In The Road
Beatnik Walking
She Never Could Resist A Winding Road
Freeze
Singapore Sadie
Turnstile Casanova
Gethsemene
One Door Opens
Outside Of The Inside
Cooksferry Queen
Uninhabited Man
Walking The Long Miles Home
Sights And Sounds Of London Town
Let It Blow
A Solitary Life
Miss Patsy
Good Things Happen To Bad People
Salford Sunday
Stony Ground
The Money Shuffle
Haul Me Up
Bad Again
Big Chimney
King Henry

You? Me? Us?: Train Don't Leave, Razor Dance, Cold Kisses
Industry: Sweetheart on the Barricade
Mock Tudor: Sibella, Crawl Back (Under My Stone), Dry My Tears and Move On
The Old Kit Bag: Gethsemane, One Door Opens, Happy Days & Auld Lang Syne
Front Parlour Ballads: Let It Blow, The Boys of Mutton Street, A Solitary Life
The Life and Music of RT: My Daddy is a Mummy
Sweet Warrior: Too Late To Come Fishing, Johnny's Far Away, Guns Are The Tongues
Dream Attic: Haul Me Up, A Brother Slips Away
Electric: Salford Sunday, Good Things Happen To Bad People
Acoustic Classics: From Galway to Graceland
Still: Long John Silver
Bloody Noses EP: If I Could Live My Life Again
