Title: Message From The Swarbricks
Post by: Ces on October 10, 2004, 11:46:17 PM
Hi all. Been asked to pass this on

"Dave & Jill understand that people are anxious to know Swarb is OK but are concerned that continual discussion may be unhelpful in creating expectations or worries.

They have asked that if people want news about Swarb's progress could they please access his website at

www.folkicons.co.uk/swarbnew.htm

Where news is being posted regularly. If the site doesn't change, it means there is no further news.

They are anxious to stop the spread of speculation and rumours, especially as the recovery process is likely to be a long one. Whilst appreciating the thought, they also think that the talk of presents and gifts is a little premature, but welcome e-mails of support via the website, and ask everyone to be patient'

OK - so let's chill? :D Keep Swarb in your thoughts but give him and Jill a bit of a space...God! I'm a hippy! :-[ ;D ;D...Seriously though - let's not harp on about things here...but please send e-mails to the Swarbster...I do know that's something he REALLY appreciates :D

Carey

Thanks Ces: Jill is shatteringly tired by what's been going on (while being hugely relieved by the massive progress, of course). She really needs to get her sleep and while she appreciates she is the main locus of communication, it can't be easy answering the phone twenty times a day to make the same speech to every concerned individual. (T'was a bit like me and the other chaps for three days at Crops...) As it happens, right now there appear to be some post-op probs, but this is not unexpected, so PLEASE, everyone, keep your heads down, and do what is suggested just to watch his website and send him your good wishes and yes, prayers. She knows how much we all care for him already: I think HE does too!

Latest update on Swarb - as posted at http://www.folkicons.co.uk/swarbnew.htm

“Hello folks. Sorry we haven’t posted any news for a few days but progress has been a little slow. Dave ran into a small post-operative problem that meant he had to have some minor surgery to clear an obstruction from one of his lungs. The op. went well and, once again, everyone is pleased with the way things are shaping up. The messages that people have been sending have been keeping our spirits up and, as you can imagine, we’re on a bit of a roller-coaster at the moment. Many thanks to everyone for their concern and keep sending the messages. Onwards and upwards! Lots of love, Jill”

Hi all. I think Jill's a bit worried that "Cutting and pasting' updates from the Swarb board onto other sites, means that less people visit there and MOST importantly, by not doing so, people might not take the opportunity to send messages of support to Dave (which she says are like medicine to him).

So  can  I urge anyone/everyone to regularly visit the Swarb site and if you have the time/inclination send the old fella an e-mail to cheer him up?

Cheers, Carey

Hi everyone,
does anyone have the actual Email address for messages to swarb , when i hit the send a message button on the folk icons site it brings up my email ready to send a message but without a full address

thanks and regards

Paul

Just to let you know that the click through on the Folkicons Swarb site is the direct channel for messages to Dave & Jill. We're in constant contact with Jill and as the messages arrive she gets them. We've processed hundreds of them in the last couple of weeks and as far as we are aware there are no problems with the link. Jill would like to thank all those from the Fairport List who have sent messages and jokes and she hopes to have a new bulletin up on the site in the next couple of days.

he certainly does look well!!

Incidentally, we were talking about Swarb yesterday, and we worked out that 4 generations of my family have seen him playing live ---- in person.

My grandmother saw him at a folk club in Birmingham (Solihull, I think) in the 60s - we think with either Martin Carthy or the Ian Campbell Group.

My mother saw him with FC in the mid 70s.

I've seen him numerous times with Fairport & with Whippersnapper.

And my 2 sons saw him at Croppers a few years ago.

and he's still only 63! but much younger at heart.....

Nothing to worry about but I think a few encouraging e-mails of support would be greatly appreciated.

Go to the site...and, please, give him a "shout'! :D

Nice one Randers :D.

I think we all probably jabber when addressing Higher Life Forms!...I just keep saying to myself "Chill Hancock - he's just like you!....but a thousand times better!' :D

Which doesn't help much. ;D

But, whatever, let's just keep letting him know he's still being thought of!

For those of you old enough to remember Andy Capp cartoons....

My local library has a supply of leaflets produced by MacMillan Cancer Relief, encouraging people to get a health check, etc. etc.

Any road, on the front is  a cartoon of Flo being hotly and lustfully pursued by Andy Capp with the speech bubble which reads

"Come on Flo, now the Doc's checked my lungs out, let's have a look at yours......"  ;) ;D

It loses something in the translation (i.e. no scanner to put the picture in). Still I thought I would send it to the Swarbs under the heading "I saw this, and I thought of you...."  :o

In the latest Swarb update Jill mentioned Johnny and Fanny Craddock. I well remember them too. They must've been the first tv 'Celebrity Chefs.'
Anyway it reminded me of a story I heard which may be true, possibly apocryphal. So I sent it to Swarb and then thought perhaps I could share it with you.

You must remember that this was 'live' telly in those days...................

Fanny had been showing viewers how to make doughnuts and had brought out the finished articles on a baking tray and presented them to camera with her usual flourish.
Cut to Johnny who says something like:
"Don't they  look wonderful. And for all of you at home, I hope your doughnuts turn out just like Fanny's!"

Apparently you could hear the studio staff's laughter as the final credits rolled. Even the camera was shaking with laughter!!

Absolutely Tasha! It must be so depressing/irritating to be stuck in hospital again - even though it's "par for the course'.

You must get a bit despondent...and if you haven't gigged for a while maybe even feel a bit forgotten.....

Don't let this happen people!

Your Swarbrick Needs YOU (as Lord Kitchener would almost certainly say if he was alive...and a folk fan...and allowed out wearing such a ridiculous moustache)!

So take a a few minutes out and send a message to the old fella. You don't have to have a degree in "Fairportism'...I'm sure he'd be just as keen to hear from those new to the Swarbricking world.

If e-mails are medicine then get dispensing!

Go on...let him know how much means to us 8)

Cheers, Carey

Jill Swarbrick sends this message to all at Talkawhile.

"As many of you who have seen the most recent bulletin know, Dave is still in hospital awaiting a possible operation to resolve problems created by previous tracheotomies. He has asked me to thank everyone at Talkawhile who has sent a message or contributed to the sterling efforts by Ces on behalf of Swarbaid. (A special thanks to Nuthouse - enjoy the evening!) We hope that you'll all raise a glass to Dave's recovery and keep in touch via the website. A HUGE thank you from me as well - you have no idea how everyone's good wishes have sustained us. Lots of love, Jill x"

I just sent another message to Dave and Jill, I'm afraid my messages must be a bit dull for them. I can never come up with anything that I've done that might be amusing to Dave and Jill.
Oh well, I tried. The important thing, I guess is that they can see how many people are really rooting for them.

At Cambridge last night, Simon seemed to suggest it wouldn't be too long before he was playing again.  :-\

It sounds as if that's a bit optimistic, given the last few months, but wouldn't it be great if he can at last have a decent quality of life with Jill etc and think about performing when he is well

Good news indeed..

Just a thought.. with regards to
Quote
I've an album part way through with Martin Carthy. We started it in September, but then I was called for my transplant and haven't done or heard much of it since.
... if JK Rowling can have advance copied of the new harry Potter book, why not ordering advance copies of the forthcoming Swarb/Carthy collaboration ? I would be more that happy to pay for an advance copy for whenever it comes out.. you know it would be worth waiting for... also might help Dave & Jill.

Perhaps someone closer to DS can consider and advise ?

Title: Re: Message From The Swarbricks
Post by: Andy on February 27, 2005, 12:22:17 PM
I'm not close to Swarb, but I'd advise against it. For one thing he may already have had an advance from the record company! ...and presumably it'd be the record company selling a non-existent disc, which would be just a tad dodgy.

The main differnce here is that Rowling has already wriiten her book and the publishers already have it. Swarb may be better than he was, but there are no guarantees and the album may get finished, or not.

I think we'll just have to be patient.

There will be many postings about last night and Dave Swarbrick's appearance at the Birmingham gig. What a night  ;D

Anyway... SoN and I were privileged to be able to meet Dave and Jill and what I would most like to pass onto you all is how much it has meant to them both to receive the messages of support from all fans and well-wishers. We all know of the ups & downs that Dave has been through, and obviously, Jill is on that road too so it has been tough for them both but the flow of good will and support  has helped and should not be underestimated.

I hope this does not sound pompous or preachy as it surely is not meant that way.... I just wanted to make sue that Jill's thanks to everyone are properly passed on... and I would add........ don't stop now  :D.

It is indeed a wmv file but there are other players available if you want to avoid using that particular player.

I use VideoLan Client for example on my Mac and its fine. Plays most formats as well. (and its not a Windows app ;))

But whatever you use isnt it great to see Swarb blow out his candles  :)

Update from Jill on Swarb's site.  :)

You'll have to visit to find out how he's getting on, but nice words from Jill and Swarb about Carey/Ces.

Swarb wearing Jills earrings  :o Now there would be a sight to behold.

And I'm sure Ces would have smiled (a lot!)

Swarb's name was mentioned several times, from the stage, at Sellersville, Pa.

Each time a cheer went up from the crowd.

Never had the pleasure but seems to be a very poplar fellow.

anyone know how Swarb & Jill are?  Alex @ Atrax maybe?

I haven't heard from the Swarbs in a few weeks either, Paul. I think it's "no news is good news" though - Swarb's just recuperating quietly so there probably isn't much to say.

Thanks for the alert Dianne.
Good to see that Swarb is progressing well still. Sorry to see he is having problems with osteoporosis in his back though, hopefully they will be able to sort that pain out very soon, seems a shame that Swarb can only stare longingly at his freshly tuned piano ;) I have a feeling he won't be staring for long though, because he's a tenacious little b*gger (and thank goodness he is!!) ;D
Good to see continuing good news

Just thinking. There's a lot of fiddle playing in country music and that is known for attracting cowboys.  :-\

If the renovations are needed because of Swarb's illness perhaps they should have a chat with Swarb's occupational therapist to see if anything can be arranged. I know when my elderly gran needed a new bathroom after becoming registered disabled it wasall arranged that way.

If the renovations are needed because of Swarb's illness ...

Not particularly. They've just bought a new bath and washbasin that need careful, professional fitting.

Well I could fulfil one of the criteria but I think Dave and Jill would prefer professional rather than careful  ;)

Hope they find someone soon.

Many of you are now proud owners of Carey Convention t-shirts and you will delighted to hear that two are winging their way to Swarb Central.

As part of the message to Swarb Central gratitude was expresssed for Swarb's support for the Carey Convention/SftBH version of Rosie.

I have been asked to ... "Give our love to all concerned" and wishes for a Merry Xmas!

I know that glasses will be raised in cheer and cheers in reply.  [;-)
