Hi all,

Just watching solo items by Richard and Sandy back to back on BBC4's 'Folk at the BBC'.... and now it's 'Fog on the Tyne' from Lindisfarne! And now Paul Brady!! I'm holding out for some Steeleye too... What a treat!! Catch the repeat if you can!

And a repeat of the Martin Carthy concert featuring swarb later on....

Richard's version of 'Adieu, Adieu' is fab.

Cheers

Very amusing... a shame we didn't get the Martin Carthy/Ashley era Steeleye from the BBC vaults!

Yeah, they tempt us with little clips of that live daytime TV footage on various documentaries, but in the programme with full songs/no voiceover stuff we're given 'All Around My Hat' instead. Arrrggh!! They did the same in the Martin Carthy documentary where they showed a clip from a cracking Steeleye jigs set from the same archive....

I hope everyone stayed tuned for "This is Genius" Folk Britannia's "SpinalTap" piss take. Absolutely superb! Quotes:

"Yeah my dad collected and recorded many traditional folk songs - largely because they were copywrite free"
"People think that folk music is just beardy men whining on about the countryside but that's wrong - they don't all have beards"
"I have got a thick headcold but it still sounds good"
"My father got my name wrong on the album sleeve but it was only six weeks after I was born"
"We're doing a cultural exchange with Brasil - Pam Ayres is in Rio"
"My father found folk music everywhere - maybe that's why he was so often accused of plagurism"
"He went on to use folk music in a political context - urging gypsys and immigrants to leave Berkshire for instance"
"That's my great aunt - she was blinded when her first accordian blew up"
"I'm tone deaf though a lot of people would say that being tone deaf is not a big problem in folk music"
"My half brother and my dad had a big falling out when he bought an electric guitar for his 16th birthday. Dad thought that folk music should be played on an acoustic guitar and a recorder"
"He produced a celtic Irish protest album - Songs in the Key of Orange" It was badly received"
"I mean to the Brazilians, Ralph McTell is like Ravi Shankar"

The 'This is genius' bit was good, wasn't that John Tams & Ashley Hutchings in the background of the solo Morris dancer?

Yes, but did you notice that as the credits were rolling and the voiceover said that Guenivere had gone to Brasil there was a quick shot of a grave with a wooden cross with "Tennyson" written on it

Even worse - Peter Knight miming fiddle when the solo was clearly a mandolin!

It was fiddle & mandolin so not quite that bad, but still pretty noticeable. Almost as daft was Rod Clements' somehow managing to play his bass guitar without using his hands during the fiddle bit in 'Fog On The Tyne'  Smiley And I'm still laughing at Si Cowe...

I didn't catch the 'Genius' show - hopefully my mate has recorded it to DVD, along with all 16 hours of the folk season apparently - but it sounds like the Albion/morris clip is from the excellent 1980 'Lively Arts' Albion Band documentary.

Where did that Sandy footage come from!!!!

Seems that this suggestion is the most agrred on, according to various email lists....

I presume that this is from the 'Ten In One' video set recorded in 1971. It
was reshown at the launch party for Clinton Heylin's biography of Sandy in
Banbury 2000, and somehow leaked into the public domain. It was available on
the internet for some time, although the quality of my copy is less than
perfect. Also recorded were "Late November" and "North Star Grassman".

RT was filmed in Shirley Kershaw's house in Cropredy last festival-time. Seems though they cut Simon's piece, as well as Jude's piece....

Hello Suzip, and welcome to you in Adelaide  Smiley

A few people, myself included, have been recording the series. There may be some who can forward copies on. (I'm still trying to figure out how to make copies of what we've recorded. We don't have a second recorder so would have to persuade the DVD to record via the PC or something.)

Meanwhile, if you go here - http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/music/features/folk-britannia-season.shtml - you can find some clips and background to the series.

Cheers
