Fairport. Mr R Thompson to be precise. When recently questioned on the meaning of the lyrics he replied, with his tongue very much in his cheek I suspect, that he thought it was one of his easier ones to understand!
How quick is that?

To me it's a sweetheart that doesn't hold with him joining up and going to war, and when he does she leaves him.

Assumed it was an anti war song with the title being a reference to how easy it is to let bad stuff happen simply by doing nothing. But sloths are really cute as well.

Ah Cute!
Funny I was just listening to Sloth on Full House.
I'd always followed it along the lines of Malcolm - war as an analogy for relationship problems - but Mix's interpretation seems to make sense.
Assume the title refers to it's speed/length?

I understand it as a relationship that is slowly collapsing as two parties move further apart and cannot find common ground. "Sloth" is not about speed but the lack of effort either party is prepared to put into putting things right.
IMHO

Isn't the sloth of the title a reference to one of the seven deadly sins?

Interesting this, because lyrics are usually the last thing I listen to. I just love RT's guitar work on this song.

He had planned to write about the other 6 ... but lost interest and couldn't be bothered.
