As mentioned in the great song 'The Angels took my racehorse away'

Some coverage in the Scottish press over the revival of the Lanark Silver Bell.

One of Scotland's most famous races, the Lanark Silver Bell, may be resurrected some 30 years after it was last run. A plan is under discussion to hold a prestigious race for the bell - which is in the keeping of South Lanarkshire Council - at Hamilton Park as part of a day to promote Lanark and the surrounding district.

The Lanark Silver Bell is one of the oldest sporting trophies in existence. It may even be the oldest in the world, because some experts contend that at least part of it dates back to 1165, when a trophy was presented to the Burgh of Lanark - perhaps to mark the silver jubilee of the burgh's charter of 1140 - by King William the Lion. The king visited Lanark often for hunting and racing, so such an idea is not fanciful.
