The Lady Lies by Genesis from And Then There Were Three.
It has a dark fairy tale theme like much of the Liege and Lief material.
The intro would sound great on twin fiddles.
Simon would sing the verse
" From the mouth of the monster,he rescues the maiden fair,
oh,but we know she's a demon, come to lure him to the demons lair...."
(see you're hooked already aren't you?)
Chris and DP on the chorus
"Come with me I need you I fear the dark and I live all alone.."
(don't listen to her!!)
Chris could do the high middle 8 and Ric do the 'keyboard' solo which would sound great on violin,
etc,etc.
It's not one of my favourite Genesis songs to be honest but really, guys it was MADE for you to cover.
Better than the original it would be.
Trust in the Force you must.
Hmmmm.
Turned into Yoda I seem to have.

Ok - if Fairport do the D's Tribute at Cropredy next year,
when the Devil asks "Be you Angels?"
Do we in the audience shout back "No we are but men - FOLK!!!"

In general I find Fairport doing covers to be a really bad idea - because I almost inevitably like the origional better, and also I don't want them to turn into a folk Hayseed Dixie.
Having said that I think they could do a great (read less schmaltzy) version of Anthony John Clarkes 'The Only Life Gloria Knows' (I think thats what its called). It would suit Simons voice I think.

...you could argue that the concept of one band/person owning a song is inimical to the spirit of folk music..
