Cropredy 2018

« on: June 14, 2017, 04:26:31 PM »

I have been listening to the 25th anniversary Cropredy album and realised how much I liked Close to the Wind as a song. BUT although it was in the FC set for a while as far as I know it was never a studio performance being a Swarb and Nicol track. What other songs, part of Fairport sets, but never recorded by them do we love?

Was there ever a non-demo studio version of Ballad Of Ned Kelly? That's a good one

I'm having difficulty thinking of examples. All Along the Watchtower? The Grateful Dead had loads of songs that there was never a studio version of.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure it's the case that there's no studio version of Close to the Wind. Isn't it on In Real Time (which, as we know, was not really a live album)?

Well... it's on In Real Time, which was recorded as-live in the studio with the band all playing at the same time and fake crowd noises added... but they've never done a conventional studio recording of it with each band member doing their part separately.

Staines Morris was never recorded in the studio, though it did make a live album.

Thinking about it, RT did it with Ashley for Morris On, so it sort of was.

And perhaps it would have made the album after Full House if Richard had stayed with Fairport.

How about Shattering Live Experience? A Great SN composition, which (I think) has only seen the light of day as a radio session.
