First Bass

Hi Dave,

Thanks very much for coming to Talkawhile. Back when I was a teenager you were a huge inspiration to me, so much so that I went out and bought an old Grant Jazz Bass Copy, wired it up to some speakers I tore out of an old radiogram and eventually learnt to busk along to some of your bass riffs. It was much was easier once I'd realised the elastic band that powered my record player was knackered, up until then I had assumed Fairport played in some very exotic and unusual keys.

Who or what inspired you to take up bass playing?

How did you learn the basics?

What was your first bass like?

hi Andy, I took up bass after going to an audition with Birmingham band "the uglies" as a guitarist. They chose Roger Hill as he was much betterer than me. However on the way out of the Carlton club in Erdington Brum. Steve Gibbons the singer said that if I changed to playing bass  I could join the band. I gave John their departing bassist£80 for his' 62 precision, and that was my first bass. It's on most of my early F.C. albums, Tulls "A" and Nick Drakes "BryterLater" and when Chris and I split and there was a need to sell stuff, it was purchased by Mat Davies who was playing with"Little Johnny England" Luckily Mat became my son in law so it is still "in the family" Regards, peggy.
