I finally had time to listen to my copy of The Marksman last night. I think I would deem it inessential. It kicks off with a song by Christine Collister, very 80s pop in style but with RT clearly playing in the background. There are a couple of nice instrumentals which clearly have his fingerprints on them too but to describe the rest of the music as "incidental" would probably imply a greater sense of excitement than it actually posesses. It is mostly bland, easy listening with 80s production values. RT receives a co writing credit on every track but to be honest, it would be hard to detect that he had been anywhere near most of the tracks.
The album finishes with a solo piano piece which is actually very pretty and on which RT receives a writing credit but piano is not his instrument and I doubt any performing involvement.
All in all then, it was interesting to hear and I did not pay a lot for it but I doubt that it will get many repeat listenings. I have converted the whole thing to Mp3 but I suspect that there are only about three tracks that will stay in my library.
