Hilary James & Simon Mayor
Farnsfield Acoustic 11/6/05

Hilary looked stunning in her gorgeous pink ensemble, surrounding her giant mandobass on the full sized Farnsfield stage last night!

We packed the room and everyone went away very happy..  some back to Leicestershire, some to Yorkshire and even to North Devon!  But by far the happiest and most surprised was Mave.. the mother of Pastieboy..  she had a birthday dedication from Simon and a tiny birthday cake from me!!

Hilary and Simon were incredibly professional..  chatting like old friends one minute, playing so exquisitely the next, not only is Simon a world class mandolinist, he also plays guitar and is an excellent fiddler too.  Hilary played mandobass and guitar..  The two sets were a mixture of Classical, such as Vivaldi and the Arrival of the Queen of Sheba; folk songs .. The Sally Gardens; a couple of Jake Thackray songs.. The Lodger being one, and having the whole hall in stitches. There were several Blues standards by Hilary;  a Texas fiddle tune, Lime Rock; Celtic tunes, a three part medley including The Dark & Slender Boy.. a tune written for a pint of Guinness. The whole evening was one of the most varied of any gig I’ve ever been to, we also had two hilarious children’s songs..  The Spider in the Shed as heard on the FC Wintour and the Parrot Song…  preceded by Simon’s infamous ‘Parrot’ joke/anecdote! (See ‘Duos’!!) Spread throughout were Simon’s own tunes..  my favourite of which is The Buttermere Waltz a gorgeous tune evocative of The Lake District a favourite part of the country for Simon.

I did scribble a brief set list but can’t find it right now!

The Merch table did very well being busy throughout the whole of the interval, loads of CDs went to new homes.  Hilary met an old school friend and her mother, not seen for many years, and neighbours of theirs from Ilkley were a big surprise too.

A fantastic evening and we’ll definitely be inviting them back!

Amy. I see from your set list that they played something called Lime Rock.  I am not familiar with this tune, but Oliver W-D and Eddie Jay played a tune called Lime Rock Polka, so I guess there is a fair chance its the same one..... Smiley

Lime Rock is a Texas fiddle tune that they use a lot in competitions.. it's very fast and very exciting..  I love it.. loads of peeps play it..  don't know if it's a polka though....

Here go`s . What a superb evenings entertainment we all had last night at the Farnsfield Acoustic Hillary James and Simon Mayor gig. H&S gave a blistering ecclectic array of humour and music anyone could ask for at the pricely sum of £10. Tables laid out with candles added to the ambiance to a truly brilliant night.  . Massive thanks to Jen, Puggs, Jill and Mike for doing this on a non profit basis . Pastiemum  loved it , pity she did`nt share her cake out with us all  (she`s a bit greedy). She got the VIP treatment from H&S ,they posed for piccies and signed her DUOS cd . Mave had a night that she will never forget . We will remember that one for a very long time. It was superb . I`m after a season ticket  for these gigs, they surely must sell out once folks realise how good they are . Remember the venue is only a slight detour off both the A1 and M1.
If you`ve not seen them  DO  ----fantastic

Thanks to Simon & Hilary for a great evening and for making the technical side of the performance so easy. Can you imagine amplifying such a wide range of acoustic instruments? I was wetting myself I was a little apprehensive. However they set up everything on stage and plugged it all into a small mixer located near my PA mixer/amp. All I had to do was take one lead from their mixer, make all my setting "flat", set the volume and stare at the pretty flashing lights. Top marks to H & S.  Smiley
