I've relocated the 'chatting at gigs' discussion, which I inadvertantly started, into its own thread in !Active.

I'll make myself really unpopular here I know but I may as well voice my opinion seeing as I can! Not sure I can get as excited as you lot about wRants playing at Cropredy. Don't get me wrong, fair play to them etc. etc. and I'm sure they'll be well received... but only for what they are. I've said this before in a thread referring to Tiny Tin Lady, they're very talented for being youngsters and I love to see that but this kind of thing is a bit too close to a novelty act for my liking. I watched most of the wRants set at Banbury Canal Festival and must say I thought they were good for a bunch of kids. I'm sorry though, I don't think they're close to Cropredy material quite yet. Olly - I know you're a regular here so please don't take my negativity to heart, I'm truly pleased for you (maybe even a little envious!) and I'm sure you'll have one hell of a good time up on that big stage! wrant over (!) - please don't flame me!

Not seem them yet so can't comment on wRants but there does seem to be a general policy that the opening act is a local band, so I'm just pleased that in 2006 we get a local folk band rather than a pub rock band knocking out cover versions.

I think policy is that the opening act be a local band - correct. In that respect, I agree with your comments JackDaw.

We're also happy for the wRants to be playing this year because they were denied the chance to play last year. They were on the line-up then had to be withdrawn due to some school beaurocracy problem.

What about the encouragement an appearance of this stature can give some very talented people?.....if only one (& I'm sure there'll be more than that) is encouraged to take up music seriously to the point of gigging for the rest of their lives, I'm happy to have hem take up an hour of my Cropredy experience. Youngsters should be encouraged! <wrant2 over>

Hope to see you down the front at croppers Olly.

PS. Why did peggy invite us to play at croppers if he didn't think a 'bunch of kids' were good enough to play at croppers?

Last nights Mike Hardings show featured several brilliant contenders for the Young Folk Award 2006. He said that they were bet the ages of 15-20 and that all the acts were so good he was glad that he didn't have to make the choice between them. This is our future, and out of it will come the next Martin Carthy, Christy Moore, Maart, who knows?!

Some of us should cast our minds back to 1967 (those of us who are able, can do so in reality, others must make do metaphorically ) to a semi-pro band being asked to open for Pink Floyd at the UFO club. I rest my case. Rock on, Olly. look forward to seeing you.

Flame you? No - I don't even follow the logic of your statement. So what you are saying? Is it that unless you are an established pro act you shouldn't be playing at Cropredy? ........... (maybe even a little envious!)................................ Perhaps this explains the post? Sorry Jono, your post comes over as mealymouthed and bitter.

What about when Clarion opened Cropredy a few years ago (97 or 98, not sure). They went down a storm and, excepting Fairport themselves, were easily the most popular and talked about act to play that year!

....and at the other end of the scale, nothing could have been more 'dire' and 'unCropredylike' IMHO, OF COURSE, than Musafir from India in 2001!! C'mon Olly - lets Rock!!

this subject is possibly a week or so over the old news threshold, but people kept mentioning cave at crop for 2006, and i scanned back plenty of posts and still am unsure which cave, i am only familiar with one, and that would be nick, of mercy seat fame, which would be fantastic, but am i barking up the wrong stump?
