As you may know this is a category in the BBC Radio 2 Folk awards. Liege and Lief is currently riding high in the voting apparently. Thought that some of you might agree with me that the album is well worth this title. Another spanner in the works, I'm afraid. I voted for 'Unhalfbricking'.
'Liege & Lief' is often quoted as the 'seminal' English folk-rock album; but without the 'psychedelic folk' experiments of 'Nottamun Town' and 'She Moves Through the Fair' on 'What We Did On Our Holidays' and the epochal 'A Sailor's Life'(with Swarbrick) on 'Unhalfbricking', there would have been no 'L&L'.
I love those first 3 albums and far prefer the 'psychedelic' folk approach than the traditional arrangements rocked up we got afterwards - good as they are. They didn't really come back to that sound until Trev and Jerry joined up for 'Rosie' - which may be why the Lucas-Donahue(-Denny) line-up is my second favourite Fairport era.

On Mike Harding's programme on Wednesday night he said the 4 leaders were L&L, Penguin Eggs (Nic Jones), Pleased to See the King (Steeleye Span), and a Dick Gaugan record.

Just a thought but it seems that the nominatioins are for the albums that 'folkies' think are the most influential to 'folkies'
How about the album which did most to influence 'general' music listeners to broaden their horizons to folk music ?
Obviously, there is no way of determining which this might be but it might raise a few interesting thoughts.
How about Bob Dylans' Highway 61 Revisited, maybe Whales & Nightingales by Judy Collins (your Mum and Dad may have bought it for Amazing Grace but there were some other very good songs on album), maybe Simon & Garfunkel ? There are loads more... could these be considered the most influential folk album.
I guess it's the difference between preaching to the converted or winning hearts and minds ?

That's what did it for me, followed shortly thereafter by the Waterboys and then being dragged to my first Cropredy, which made a nice change from the likes of Deep Purple and ELP S&G's Concert in Central Park *is* the album that got me into folk... |
