I bet you won't recognise me at the bar!!!!

« on: January 09, 2006, 05:45:06 PM »

Has anyone had an e-mail from this company in relation to Fairport?

I've just recieved one with a link to a website asking me to confirm subscription to a newsletter.

The e-mail claims to be from Fairport themselves

I've checked the Fairport website but there's no mention of this company, plus they are using a Yahoo e-mail address.

Is it legit or spam??

It's sent out by Ian Northcott and, according to the Fairport List, is a Fairport-approved e-mail version of the newsletter coming out twice a year.

The yahoo address is to avoid Fairport or Ian's marketing company getting spam themselves.

There's quite a healthy debate being going on on the "List" about it but it is kosher it seems.

Has anybody had this e-mail from fairport (copy below).

I am not sure it is genuine, as it is from a Yahoo address, not the proper Fairport one. Cany anybody confirm it's genuine before I reply to it please.

See "Northshaw Marketing", Paul.

The email is ligit and officially backed by Fairport advertising an email version of their newsletter.

For more discussion on this, see the "Fairport List".

Thanks Cocker.

It just seemed odd they were using a Yahoo address to send it out.

I've got it too, and I thought it looked odd.
I can't cope with the volume from the fairport list at the moment so missed it there.
But why a yahoo, non fairport address?

The debate on this on the list is raising some interesting issues on spamming. I'm staying well away from signing up until I know a lot more.

The email you have recently recieved from <nmaltdfc@yahoo.co.uk> regarding a continuing relationship with Fairport is entirely legitmate and is originated and authorised by us as a band that you know and trust. Its purpose (because you have all individually volunteered your e-contacts along with your postal addresses hitherto) is an entirely ethical one deliberately to obviate the SPAM factor we all find so dreadful. You are being asked to “opt-in” formally to confirm this relationship, once or maybe twice a year. Your own personal details are to be held privately, not shared in any other domain,  and I urge you to trust us in this and all other matters: this was my idea of finding another way of reaching out and letting you know what we’re up to and keeping in touch with you. The people who run the system are trustworthy and I would have liked to have made a personal message like this part of the “handshake” procedure but space and time did not permit.
Meantime, if it’s not too late, Happy New Year.

Sorry folks - this doesn't necessarily come out clean in the wash.

This is being handled through:

http://www.northshawmarketing.co.uk/wst_page4.html

who is possibly the same guy as this:

http://www.transformationstrategies.co.uk/ (note the link to internet marketing)

The link we are asked to click is http://www.aweber.com/z/c/?znzs3cv2nglh4lnuznmprb2dn9nu1ty03a2g==2606

Some info on aweber.com is here http://www.hostasaurus.com/spam-aweber.com.php

I am less than happy about this, and suspect that I'm not alone. Sorry Simon.

Aweber.com is just a web maketing firm, not really spammers. They are the people who provide the service and software that the newsletter operates on.

Some versions of this can be configured to be employ quite aggressive marketing, by sending out a sequence of apparently personalised follow-ups, which would probably be considered Spam. That's what has got the bad comments.
From the statements, the Fairport newsletter isn't intending to use this. So I'd say it was probably harmless, but ill advised.

However the invitation email didn't look good, especially with a Yahoo address. It's not very 'folk family'.

« Reply #16 on: January 10, 2006, 11:17:00 PM »

I haven't had one of these emails, possibly because the email address that the Fairport Newsletter had for me is no more.... and I forgot to do anything about it.
Question: I re-regstered my email details through the FC Website, but haven't had any confirmation that its registered with them, so should I be registering through the link that Simon has posted, or just sit back, wait and think of England?

Hi Mix,

Don't click on the examples of aweber links that others have posted here - they are personalised to that particular recipient of the email and confirm that persons opt-in, not your own. If you are unsure if Fairport have added you to their list for this run of emailings, then it's probably a good idea to ask them via email on their general email address listed on their contacts page.

I'm on their list, but have not yet received an email... Has everyone else who has subscribed to the Fairport mailing list received an email already?

SteveK
I can't comment on the ethics of aweber. Had had I received such an email would have been suspicious, but I would have been able to trace it as being from the chaps or not. My basic investigations seem to agree with Colin's statement above. Thanks to Simon for confirming the authenticity of the email.
