Daily Telegraph Arts & Books section yesterday reviews "CD of the week", Anthems in Eden by Various Artists.

"A box of treasures from the folk revival's first two decades with meaty contributions from, as might be expected, Steeleye, Fairport Convention, Pentangle..."

" Re-acquiantance with Davy Graham's Anji, Fairport's Fotheringay.....etc....inventiveness....etc....vibrancy that is being uncovered again in its current bout of respect".

And me! I'm on it too!

A Trader Horne track.

I was sent a copy and it is a pretty comprehensive 4cD set.

Is this CD set in the shops, or is it a website only thingy please?

Would Jude or Malcom post the details of the set please, like who has published (is that the right word, or do I mean produced Undecided)
so I know what to ask for, when the staff of the shop look at me as if I just got off a space ship Roll Eyes

Sounds like a great addition to a catcher-upper's collection Smiley

Shame they couldn't come up with an original title, though, isn't it  Angry

Why do they list it as 'Various Artists', when it clearly has 'Shirley Collins & Dolly Collins on the front label? Huh Huh

No ..... that is the cover of the original "Anthems In Eden" album from the 1960s.  A legendary album for its combination of musicians.  My point is that this new box set shows a total lack of imagination by nicking the title.

The Bees Knees says:

'Anthems In Eden', 1969, featured a suite of songs centred around the changes in rural England brought about by the First World War, had a terrific impact upon recorded folk music. The glorious and unusual ensemble of early music instruments - rebecs, sackbuts, crumhorns and all - proved once and for all that the guitar was not the only appropriate accompaniment for folk song. Several critics have suggested that it is impossible to imagine that electric accompaniment for traditional song, as successfully purveyed by Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span, could have developed quite as it did without the pioneering 'Anthems In Eden'. All these recordings strove to marry a deep love and understanding of the English folk music heritage with a more contemporary attitude to musical settings.

Another little bit of trivia.

The ISB song "God Dog" is on this set. Shirley Collins covered it on the originak "Anthems in Eden" The only song to be on both.

The nice people at Amazon have put one in the post for me.  It sounds interesting, particulary as I have not heard of many of the artists on it.  Just wonder if I can claim it as a educational item against my tax Roll Eyes

If you're after a CD version of the original Shirley Collins "Anthems in Eden" it's available ATM. Check Amazon. It's the original plus the alternative B side from "Amaranth" on one CD.
