ok.
just been sitting here discussing bands which lack original members but keep the same name, and that led us to fairport....
so who knows what the fairport family tree really is?
and who was the drummer before gerry, or is he the only one?
did they keep him in cos they couldnt afford to change the skin on the bass drum?
when they do that fairport old and new thing at crop, how come nobody comes to relieve him?

(should have bought that album.)

Hopefully to answer your question.

Fairport still have an original member and there will be a prize if you can guess who he is.

The family tree is far too complex to explain adequately here, I think there is one in one of the boxes and an early one that was already very confusing on the History album you were looking at.

The drummer before Gery was Dave Mattacks who may plays at Cropredy this year, reasons for leaving are shrouded in mystery and probably rightly so. Before him was Bruce Rowland and before him was Dave Mattacks, see how confusing this can be, before him was the much admired Martin Lamble. Also somewhere in here was a stand in but I can't remember his name.

They probably keep Gerry because he is good regardless of whether or not the skins need changing.

Gerry is not replaced at Cropredy because of afore mentioned mystery, Mr Rowland has retired but has been known to bang a mean tambourine at Cropredy and Matin Lamble was killed in the crash.

Yes you probably should have bought the album.

But I hope this helped.

I don't think either Tom |Farnell or Shaum=n Frater were stand in's they were both proper members (even if Shaun Frater only played one gig).

But yes, they both should be in the list of drummers.

It's worse than Spinal Tap.

Who they upset I don't know, but they were never let out to play on the record, another statement waiting to be proven wrong. Like I said it's hard to keep up.

Who the Eff are Fairport, you ask?

You have obviously bypassed our stringent membership requirements in not studying the following item to GCSE standard.

http://www.fairportconvention.com/features.htm

Your homework this weekend is to answer the following:

First question:  'Which female vocalist sang with Fairport?'
Second question:  'What was the name of the other one?'
Thirdly:  'Fill in the blanks    (        ) Nicol, (             )Thompson, (             )Mattacks, Jerry (            )
             Dave (            and              ),  (           ) Allcock,  Elvis (              ),
Fourthly:  In the last question, which was the odd one out?

Tom Farnell's recordings wih Fairport eventually saw light of day on The Manor Sessions (Never officially released, but around as a sanctioned bootleg). Shaun Frater only ever played one gig, so unless he's on some obscure track on The Guvnor or something (did he play in the Ethnic Shuffle Orchestra?) there are no recordings.

Hope I've got that right.

According to Patrick Humphries, he did one gig as Fairport. Also confirmed on Fairport's own website.

And to return to Groove's original theme, of bands where the original members have all gone, I'm sure Simon has expressed the hope that Fairport might continue on to future generations. After all, how many original members are on the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra? Or the Black Dyke Mills Band?

Very nearly, Groovieness.

There were some trick ones there - but it's enough to pass you're eleven plus.  Get to Key Stage whatever by passing today's test:
1.  What was the most influential album of all time, ever, in any genre?  Possibly.
2.  Which band is the odd one out - the Albion Band, Steeleye Span, Dylan Project, Fairport Convention?
3.  How many members of Fairport Convention does it take to change a lightbulb?

And revise question 3 again, Groovy.  Lips Sealed

I know the answer Peely. Please please please. It was that queue out of Crop bottom gate in 1998 where someone sang a very rude version of Steeleye's Hat song and no-one else's specially not the bands you said. It's true innit?

Can I please claim my prize now?

I'd like to borrow the portable commode and paraphernalia includin the secrecy wind-break fer this year's Crop. Oh and could you arrange that 6X pipe from the bar to where I'm sittin.

Thankee old dear.
