Hello All, Recently spotted a dvd of Sandy Denny on www.play.com and wondered if anyone knew what it was? From the waffle attached it appears to be interviews with people who knew Sandy. Don't really know, I pre-ordered it as it is out in august, hope its good any info appreciated. (The 1000 years of popular music : Richard Thompson 2 cd 1 dvd set sounds like a good offer as well?) Jim is very good at typing, I've noticed. I think he may have been a secretary in a previous life, typing things about Sandy Denny, and that sort of singing person.

The music of folk star Sandy Denny is put under the microscope; featuring insightful interviews, rare performances and comment from those who know Sandy.Hmm - the only company I know doing that kind of DVD is Classic Rock Productions, who get around paying royalties for footage they use by only featuring short clips of one number from a gig, on the premise that it is for 'review' purposes. Google them & check out other 'review' type DVDs....

I think this is documentary that they interviewed Martin Carthy for at the Oxford Folk Festival.
I did not get their names (it was not the Aussie crew but another one) but Martin was happy to co-operate.

Still had to pre-order despite the lack of info as my wife likes to have as much sandy related items as possible. Saying that, only official releases, haven't bought the clips that are always on offer on ebay. Did buy BBC sessions twice once on release for 16.00 (which was lost) then for 40.00 off amazon, both original copies. But you won't see us buying albums signed by sandy, that she isn't even on for £400 as previously available on ebay or these weird japanese box sets that keep on popping up. Brendan

Seems to be produced by a company called Chrome Dreams ( www.chromedreams.co.uk). Earlier ones in the same series on Syd Barrett, Velvet Underground, etc get the thumbs up from Amazon customers, so here's hoping this will do her justice.

Thanks for all the links and info. I can but wait now. Anything is better than nothing and with Colin Irwin and Nigel Williamson involved it can't be that bad. Brendan

I bought a copy from A New Day's record stall at Nantwich yesterday (Sunday) for £10, and am listening to it now (do this interweb thingy on FreeBSD, but "multimedia" on Windows). Sounds interesting, but has far more talk than music. Won't have time to watch it untill after The Green Man. Ahh. A snip from something I have never heard called "The Boatman" has just been played. It is available NOW from http://www.chromedreams.co.uk/ for £12.99 [UK] £13.49 [Europe] £13.99 Rest of the World. Case details include 119 minutes, All regions (0), 4:3, stereo, SIDVD057. Can't find "Sexy Intellectuals" (the publishers) on the net. (Martin on Dylan going electric is interesting). "In the shops, or from Amazon, from 20th August". I think Jude has the right to be offended about part of the commentary.

Here's the salient bit of the press release I received, a few days ago...
> SANDY DENNY - UNDER REVIEW > > “My favourite singer out of all the British girls that ever were." - > Robert Plant > > This documentary film reviews the music and career one of Britain’s > finest female vocalists and songwriters: Sandy Denny. She is revered > deeply amongst fans of folk music and the singer-songwriter genre, > but has never received universal acclaim for her tremendous talent. > This program attempts to redress this imbalance and reveal why she > remains such an inspiration to so many. The features include obscure > footage and rarely seen photographs, musical performances reviewed > and re-assessed by a team of esteemed experts, and live and studio > recordings of Sandy Denny classics, reappraised by our panel of > contributors. > > Tracklist: Solo, Crazy Man Blues, I'm A Dreamer, Northstar Grassman, > Next Time Around, The Pond And The Stream, This Train, > Blackwaterside, Green Grows The Laurels, It'll Take A Long Time, It > Suits Me Well, One More sad Refrain, Like An Old Fashioned Waltz > > Bonus Features: ‘Remembering Sandy Denny,’ “The first Sandy Denny > digital interactive quiz,” Full contributor biographies > > Selection # SIDVD507 UPC: 823564508498 > Run Time: 90 minutes
I've got a review copy on its way to me.
