So - resident experts - is this the original, or has it happened since ??

Not an expert, and haven't been around long enough even to be 100% sure this is the building I think it is... But I'd be inclined to guess that it's not "the" hole. But looking closer I could be wrong... Replacement bricks do look kinda weathered... I dunno, just saw the thread...

They clearly put the arrow sign in the wrong place. Glad to see it missed the original 3x4 Georgian windows though.

Today, it is strictly one direction at a time, controlled by traffic lights.
As I came down the hill and saw the building ahead, I just knew it had to be the former Angel Inn.
Easy to see how vehicles could drive straight through the wall !
Doesn't look very lived-in these days ?

I wonder why the window bottom right is a 4x4 - must be a later alteration. Definitely not Georgian. The rest of it looks very convincingly like a Georgian inn (especially that gap on the left if it lead to what might have been stables or latterly a pub car park.

I live about three miles from the Angel. Standing back, you can see the near perpendicular run of replacement bricks much higher than what, I imagine, was another door.
A pal of mine lives exactly opposite and was the first one into the building to help . Having pulled the occupant of the right hand seat out alive, he realised that the 'passenger' was, in fact, the driver, unfortunately dead. He was a Dutch truck driver in a left hand drive vehicle.
My pal did say he had never seen anyone as white in the face as Swarb. Hardly surprising.
The only time I have ever spoken to Swarb was at the 'obituary signing' a few years ago. Having told him where I lived, his only reply was "Good God!"
Everyone I have spoken to in Little Hadham who was around in 1971 speaks fondly of the band.

Thanks for adding a bit of local info, Malcolm. I was going to say that the replacement bricks looked more like an in-filled doorway but you've beat me to it. Here's a couple of pics, the first one mid 70s I think, with a second doorway, the second photo is from the Angel Delight CD booklet and rather puzzlingly has another window in place of the door/brick in-fill.

I'm confusing myself Looks like the second doorway has been replaced by a window, and the area of in-fill was originally wall....so that may well be "the hole in the wall where the lorry came in".

the bottom bit looks like a bricked up doorway but some of the bricks above it look like they have been replaced, so it could well be the "hole in the wall"
