It's all there on t'internet :-
Steeleye Span had agreed to appear in a special television show in which they would play alongside their only folk-rock rivals, Fairport Convention, on Ainsdale Beach, just north of Liverpool. As the performance was being given just for television, it had been arranged that a token crowd of about 200 should come along as the audience. Unfortunately a Liverpool newspaper got the story totally wrong and announced that there was to be a free festival.
The result was utter chao 5,000 people turned up.The two bands stayed around for a while to play for the crowds when the recording was over and then - as more and more people kept arriving - the man operating the generator brought proceedings to an abrupt halt by driving the generator van away. It was then that the gallant Ainsdale police, all three of them, arrived to tell of another 5,000 people boarding trains in Liverpool. The resulting 10,000 furious fans first demolished the empty stage, then promptly set fire to it.

Not sure about infamy, but I was there, and the only event I recall that could lead to any notoriety was that FC & Steeleye (or at least some of each band) played some tunes together after the recording had been completed, and were still going strong when the Granada crew started to pack up. There was some booing when the music finally stopped, but not directed at the bands. At which point, most people started the trek back to Ainsdale station. Whether the event has subsequently been "embroidered" I don't know, but I certainly don't recall reading at the time of any "riot" - these reports seem to have proliferated over the years. I can't believe the figures often quoted of 10,000 people milling about on the foreshore.
(I'm looking forward to viewing this clip when I get home...)

I think the guy in the German helmet may have been one of the guards from Stalag Luft Pontins close by.
(And to think, 12 years on, those very dunes were part of one of my regular running routes...)

my favourite as well, probably because that was the line up when i first saw them I love that 4-piece sound...(my first was with Bruce 10 years later, but the same thing holds)...its a lovely sonic dynamic for folk-rock...works perfectly. |
