I met a guy at a party last weekend. He seemed to know plenty of obscure facts about folk music in particular. Anyway he claimed Mr. Swarbrick played the mandolin outro on Rod Stewarts "Maggie Mae". I had never heard that he had done that.
Is there any truth to this statement?

More likely to be Peggy, given his connections - and definitely not John Peel  <research mode> In fact it was Ray Jackson, of Lindisfarne. In the same ballpark then, but not such a happy story: "Their profile was also raised when Jackson played mandolin on Rod Stewart's breakthrough hit single "Maggie May", even though Stewart only credited him on the sleeve of the parent album 'Every Picture Tells a Story' as 'The mandolin player in Lindisfarne...the name slips my memory'. Definitely not Swarb. (Oh dear name dropping again sorry) but I shared a flat with Martin Quittenton and his girlfriend at the time Maggie May was being written (incidentally by Martin and Rod) and recorded and I knew most of the musicians involved with the project, and I'm sure I would have known if Dave S was involved Jude  |

Ha... I knew this was nonsense about Swarb.
Thanks for the info and the good bit of trivia regarding the real mandolinist.
$15 for what could very well be the most widely recognized mandolin riff ever.
Unbelievable.

I knew most of the musicians involved with the project,
I was googling on this thread and learned that the slide guitarist Sammy Mitchell had died. He lived in Putney in the 70's ,was a regular in the Half Moon ,was a great session playerand a good friend of Ralph's Sammy RIP Drew |
