Yes it was.The Jan 1971 OGWT performance with Swarb in great form.Is that really Simon on the Clapton-signed guitar?Whisperin' Bob tells us at the end that it was from part of a longer medley-shame they couldn't show it all.Great couple of retrospective programs-as well as FC there was particularly fine stuff from John Martyn,Roxy,Ry Cooder and Rory Gallagher on it too.Does anyone know if these "best of " progs are available on DVD?

No, definitely not Simon. I think it's Roger Burridge who was a temp replacement......(simon left FC pretty soon after the Babbacombe Lee album I think...)  Slippy |

Yes the DVDs are fantastic and bring back wonderful memories of a less manufactured time (musically), but personally I'd recommend skipping the commentary from David "up my own arse" Hepworth and Mark "even further up my own arse" Ellen. Pompous "we were there so nu-nu-nu-nu-nu"-type ramblings. Looking forward to tonight's prog - BBC4 has had some really cracking (good Welsh expression, that!) progs since it was launched - well worth the licence fee! Talking of rambling ... I'll shut up now  |

Or possibly even cheaper still from Play.com, or in the HMV sale ?
I bought all 3 separately as they were released, then saw them some time later as a set of 3 much cheaper.
They are great fun - a real reminder of the past. Having watched it all the way through, one 'DVD extra' option is to watch the music being performed, but with extra commentary from the old presenters - they really go to town slagging off anything and everything - it's like OGWT Grumpy Old Men version.
Worth trawling internet sites. No P&P charges on Play.com

11th Jan 1972 I think.It was Roger Hill on guitar,right.Thanks a lot for that.Should have checked Pete Frame's family tree from the box set.It seems Roger was in the band with DM,Swarb and Peggy between Nov '71 and Feb '72.If this short-lived "experimental" line up left a legacy I saw it on BBC4 last night and haven't stopped playing Babbacombe Lee since!! He continued in the band up to June '72 with Tom Farnall on drums in an all Brummie lineup before leaving to make way for Trevor Lucas.Thanks also for all the tips on where to get the DVD's.Much appreciated. |

There are two more Old Grey Whistle Test shows on BBC4 again tonight, from 11 o'clock, this time featuring the years 1974 and 1975.
Richard and Linda Thompson will be on the the 1975 programme. Nice!

Rhea's 'Maverick Child and a couple of other goodies from those abandoned sessions turned up on 'UNOCONVENTIONAL'.

That reminds me, my Oregon friends saw Dave Rhea in concert recently. Their ears pricked up when they overheard someone say 'apparently he was in Fairport for a while'. So he's still gigging and living in the Portland, Oregon area Cheers Nick |
