At a guess it's fitted with 3 normal pickups, and a microphone pickup. One lead goes to a guitar amp from the standard pickups, the other goes to the PA from the underbridge microphone.

Well I can count 10 strings there. Generally speaking, a 5 course double stringed instrument would be called a cittern and a four course double stringed instrument would be called a bouzouki, unless, of course, the instrument has a scale length of more than about 23 inches in which case it could be called a ten string bouzouki. Now a four course double stringed instrument with a scale length of less than about 23 inches but more than about 18 inches would be called an octave mandolin and one less than about 18 inches but more than about 15 inches would be a mandola. The cittern would have octave strings in the lower two courses, likewise the bouzouki although the bouzouki can be strung like the mandolin, mandola and octave mandolin as unison pairs. There is also a mandobass (as played by Hilary James) but you would need one hell of a strap around your neck unless you are sensible and play it upright like a double bass. The mandobass is unique in the mandolin family of instruments in that it has only four strings.

The two connections/leads Chris has is for high availability, if one goes down, the other takes over - the two connections having a combined virtual address with each connection having a unique physical address. Now each address, both virtual and physical, has to be unique or you end up with communications problems and one hell of a confusion with the band, sound engineers and audience not having a clue what is happening and incorrect reviews appearing in the newspaper.
