Just picked up a copy in a 2nd hand CD shop, for a fiver. It's pretty good, in my humble. Now where's that flyer about re-released stuff that came out with the Newsletter last week...

One of my all time favorites; never understood the hostility it generates among some.

Could've been a bit of a shock at the time? Whereabouts is it in the Maart era? Early? People who were expecting stuff more like the Swarb era could've been in for a bit of a surprise. Of course I could be talking utter gibberish...
Gold is a fantastic song, as is the 2nd track - All your Beauty or somesuch. And the instrumental that comes between them.
Need to get the space to listen to the lyrics of Wounded Whale properly, but I think it's probably a masterpiece.

It's ok. I bought it after Red and Gold, and liked it at the time. Very MOR, not at all folky - but Gold is nice (not a reworking of the Gary Kemp classic)

I find it much more folky than, say, XXXV or OTNH. But the MOR schmaltz was definitely starting to make its presence felt, despite Maart's best efforts Some great gigs played around that time, too... when you could still rely on the audience getting out of their seats and crowding round the front of the stage for Matty and MOTL...

Oh God - them were the days... they even used to play some 'rock' venues as well didn't they, instead of the theatres alone.. Aye, when I were a lad etc etc

Five Seasons was really a mixed bag for me, Maarts instrumental, Claudy Banks, Wounded Whale and the Card Song all great, real FC stuff. Cod C&W nonsense like All Your Beauty, dreadful schmaltz like Ginnie, and non commital sub rock like Sock In It were pretty poor. Mind you, that was a great line up alhtough Maart was playing too many keys and not enough strings at the time.

Ah, now I actually like Ginnie... and I wouldn't say it's schmaltz. I'd say it skirts just the right side of twee and non commital sub rock like Sock In It Agreed that it's nowt special, but at least it's got a bit of balls to it, unlike a lot of FC stuff since etc etc etc. I think it's fair to say that I'd happily listen to The Five Seasons twice rather than OTNH once.

Personally, I think that's a pretty good summation of the band at that point in time. The disappointing thing to me is that, although I agree with most of the inherent criticism in the above, it still strikes me as a far more creative and vibrant time in the bands life than the last few years....still, can't go moping about in an anniversary year can I?!!

"Claudy Banks, "The Wounded Whale," "Gold," "Ginnie": to my ears, all really wonderful songs, marvelously performed and recorded. Among the best the band has ever done.

Yeah it sounded like he'd had an accordian for Christmas that year! Pleasant enough album, not my favourite. Bit over-produced IMO
