I had not realised they appeared on Danish TV in 69. Has anyone researched whether the footage remains? Will this be another YouTube surprise?

Any ideas what this is going to be? It's due out in early August according to HMV. johnnysaint
It it's anything like the John Martyn double CD re-issues, it'll be the original album plus various live tracks and session recordings.

maybe simon could enlighten us...
Absolutely the first I've heard about it. There is no newly-discovered archive stuff, and we certainly haven't had a get-together to re-record it as older versions of our original selves. Well I haven't anyway. Maybe the invite was sent to that Nicol chap from Steeleye Span instead.

I guess the point about calling something a 'new reissue' rather than just doing a new pressing of a recent reissue, from the marketing point of view, is that it gets press - reviews in music magazines, flagged up on websites, and thus attention. It's got us talking right?

Wasn't agreed in the Live @ the BBC thread that Lady is a Tramp isn't actually Fairport? I'm not impressed with this CD at all. If you have Liege and Lief and tyhe BBC Box set, you'll have all the tracks already. This bandwagon is starting to slow down with the sheer wieght of the people jumping on the back of it.

No, you're thinking of Light My Fire. Lady is a Tramp is definitely RT on vocal, DM on piano, SN on drums. I'm not impressed with this CD at all. If you have Liege and Lief and tyhe BBC Box set, you'll have all the tracks already. This bandwagon is starting to slow down with the sheer wieght of the people jumping on the back of it.
However, I do agree that BBC makes this release unnecessary. Of course, for people who did not want to spend the money for BBC, this might be a good purchase.

Mind you, for anyone who didn't get the BBC box set and can't be arsed to wade through the Free Reed complilations, it looks like a good addition to the car glove box. One does have to wonder about the degree of "Well, since we've dug this up anyway, we might as well stick it out and see what happens..." involved but, as ever, as far as I understand it the way the principle of the market works is that purchases of such compilations aren't actually compulsory. Or is it mandatory?

So much for the "Danish TV session" theory! It seems however there is the usual trick of having one previously unreleased track...
10 In Other Words (Fly Me To The Moon)
... to tempt wavering buyers. Whether one would buy a full 2CD just to get it, especially if it can be bought separately via ITunes, is another thing.
What's the story behind that particular track, I wonder? Sounds like a bit of a throwaway piece to me.

Could it be this?
(Ashley on the 2002 rerelease): "Other items found included a long jazz improvisation featuring Dave Mattacks on piano, but the band vetoed its inclusion on the extended CD verison as being out of character with the other material. It will certainly be released at a later date" (Hinton/Wall biog of The Guv'nor, p131).

Does packaging ever become a consideration in buying something like this? Would a nice booklet, with rare photos and a good critical essay about the importance of Liege & Lief, would that sway anyone into picking this up? Just wondering. TG

I don't know. But this release bugs me. It doesn't inspire me to buy it but now every time I look at my single disc version, I'll be wishing I had it. Dammit - I loathe being a music business sucker! Jules

I'm not buying it because I have the original, and I've never been a slave to any band. In fact too many extras and reissues tends to alienate me. Genuine good tracks that have collectable status are one thing; commercial filler is another entirely.

It would have to be pretty spectacular packaging for me to be tempted to buy the album for a 4th time! Especially if the one unavailable track is available as a download. And I can't imagine what sort of packaging that might even be, or what new major revelations could be in the booklet. I'm really perfectly happy with the last bonus-track single remastered L&L. Especially since I have RT & Swarb's autographs on it.
