I'm hoping someone can help me here.

Whilst getting changed at the gym a couple of weeks ago I found myself humming along to a familiar sounding tune. I usually try and avoid the frankly terrifying music that gets played at the gym by jamming my ipod headphones tightly into my ears to block it out. However this turned out to be a rather enjoyable poppy arrangement RT & Tim Finn's wonderful Persuasion, performed by a female singer somewhat in the style of someone like Natalie Imbruglia.

I have been trying to find out ever since who it was by but without success. Nice to hear RT picking up cover versions and especially ones that are populist enough to be played somewhere like my gym (usually the preserve of Will Young/Dido/Girls Aloud types). However, does anybody have any idea who this is by?

I'm not sure what you are implying!  Embarrassed

Pretty certain it is not Chris & Kellie While. It has a faintly dance feel to it.

I don't have facilities to listen here so I will check later but I think it is unlikely. It is a little too obscure. They don't tend to play anything by artists who do not troubel the Top 40.

It could also be the version as sung by Stellar on the 2005 album "She Will Have Her Way ~ The Songs of Tim & Neil Finn"

Certainly that's a very poppy version.

I'll try that though my instinct tells me that it was probably a single judging by the rest of the music they play.

Funnily enough I was looking at this album on Amazon the other evening, having just rediscovered Tim Finn via an old CD single of the great Hit The Ground Running. I am now in the market for a copy of the Before & After album, which seems to be deleted. But I digress...

Have now heard it. I can't be certain but that could well be the one.

Thanks.

As i understand, he lyrics were written by Tim (i think?) Finn and the music was written by Richard Thompson.
My trio have been singing it for about three years now.

Just to fill in the gaps here. The music was written by RT as part of his soundtrack for the Australian film Sweet Talker and it appears in instrumental form on the soundtrack album. Tim Finn added lyrics later and included it on his Before & After album. I first encountered it vocally at an RT acoustic gig in Crawley as a duet between Richard & Teddy on the tour that was recorded for Celtschmerz, on which it also appears.
