The Arts Centre at the Norwegian Church , Cardiff Bay was the small but beautifully formed venue for Dave Swarbrick’s solo gig last night. The compere came out to introduce Swarb and said something like “Dave Swarbrick. What can I tell you?” Indeed.  On he came, to warm applause. He said we looked like a tough crowd. Cheek! He began by saying that he would be telling us a bit about his life in music and some of the people he has worked with and who influenced him. Luminaries such as Beryl Marriot and A.L. Lloyd were included of course, and there were plentiful references to Martin Carthy, Trevor Lucas and all things Fairport. The evening was a delightful mixture of music and humorous anecdotes. He was in fine fettle and played with such energy and dexterity, it almost took my breath away. The tales and anecdotes were hilarious – and his delivery of them was second to none. Ancient Muse and I were practically rolling in the aisles.  Some way into the second half we had a really special treat. Swarb sang a song called Kennedy, Kennedy and Martin Luther King. Quite apart from the pleasure of hearing him sing again, I can vouch for the fact that his voice is sounding really good. Let’s hope this bodes well for more vocals in the future. I couldn’t possibly write a set list, but we had a wonderful rendition of “Dirty Linen”, “Carthy’s March/The Lemon Tree.” (The former preceded by a very silly story about how Swarb wrote this tune whilst asleep).  All too soon, it was time for the last set of tunes. He received a rapturous standing ovation, gave us a very generous encore and received another standing ovation as a result. He looked very pleased with the reception he received. It was a fabulous evening, and a musical memory to treasure always. Thank you Swarb.  |

It certainly was a cracking night, Swarb is the consummate storyteller and I wish my eyes could watch his fingers as fast as they could play - all I could do was marvel at the blur and enjoy the wonderful colours his music painted!

I can't believe it! I was across the square watching the stage show of "I'm sorry I haven't a clue" at the Cradiff Millennium centre - I could have dropped in and raided his dressing room when he was on stage....
Small world eh?
By the way, it's a lovely hall and it was packed with laughter. That Humph and his team certainly know their stuff, even if Samantha was detained elsewhere.

So the world is not QUITE as small as I implied. Temporal dislocation etc. But hey, he stopped sending me his diaries (any of them!) some time ago. V. pleased to hear he's able to start warbling again though, I know it's been a real ambition of his since he had that succession of disabling but life-saving tracheostomies. The man is indefatigable to the point of legend indeed.
Incidentally, Graeme Garden (a near-neighbour who invited us) defined in the Uxbridge English Dictionary round "Warbling" as wait for it.... Geordie Jewellery.

Excellent evening at The Croft, Bristol but could have done without the support act, pointless poetry from pretentious Bue Aeroplane person...although the guitarist was ok. "What time is it?" he said between poems, "Swarby time!" I suggested.
Swarb played for at least an hour and a quarter, really nice to see him solo as you could really appreciate (even more) what a genius musician he is, good anecdotes too, very funny. Also a nice tribute to Trevor Lucas. Can't add much to the sentiments expressed in Gower Flower's splendid review (of an earlier gig) but it was a memorable evening indeed.

Who's son, I learnt today plays keyboards in the Scissor Sisters... nice little interview with Graeme in the ever-excellent Word mag (which also has a good piece with pics on the Radio 2 awards featuring Martin Carthy et al)...which is about as close to getting this back on topic as I can manage...sorry |
