Dear friends, today I carefully listened to Bright Phoebus, the beautiful 1971 album by La and Mike Waterson. RT plays acoustic guitar in most of tunes. Well, what I noticed is that some slow, haunting songs from that album (above all Lal Waterson's compositions) sounds like an anticipation of "future" RT self penned songs style. Also remarkable is RT acoustic guitar notes also have a "Pour Down Like Silver" flavour.
Then I fancy if RT was influenced, consciously or not, but maybe deeply, by his colalboration to that album - in my opinion, a gem from weird folk years neglected by many.

I don't see Mole in a Hole on my copy of Bright Phoebus  Yes, it was written by Mike Waterson ... ah, I think I see what you are saying: RT learned it from Mike during the BP sessions, so there was a BP connection even though the song did not appear on BP. |

You're quite right of course. I was making it up. Funny thing, the memory, isn't it. I expect it'll be on there as a bonus track when the CD release comes out. Remarkable album though. |

Ollie you are right. This is very controversial, and apparently the CD copy which is out at the moment does not pay royalties to the artists. It's a very complicated story and has been debated endlesslessly over at Mudcat. Go and have a read if you want to lose the will to live. Certain artists e.g. Nic Jones are losing out on lots of money because their old recordings are locked away and the owner won't release them. |

My only concern over what has been written here is the word 'controversial' - I'm not sure there is any real debate over what has happend.
If anyone looks up the mudcat threads on the Nic Jones stuff, you might also be interested in what Dick Gaughan has to say there about the fact his earliest albums are subject to the same 'non -release' and royalty issue - you can buy a few of these albums (including the Five Hand Reel stuff) but not one penny goes to the artists who made the records.
