Following on from Sense of Occasion's use of songs from Andy Partridge, Glen Tilbrook, Steve Ashley etc; what about an album of songs written and recorded by other artists ie in the style of Bowie's Pin ups or Bryan Ferry's These Foolish Things.

Could be interesting and entertaining.
Without going too much into specific single songs, I could imagine Fairport doing a brilliant album by "re-interpretating" classic rock stuff eg Smoke On The Water, etc. by adding their folky edge.
On the other side, I would be very interested to hear Fairport together with some "classical line-up"
let`s say together with a 4-piece horn section and about 6-8 stringy things like violins, cellos, etc and then go over classical Fairport material. Wouldn`t that be something on Cropredy stage?

I'm not sure any of this would be a good idea at all. The 67 - 68 Fairport had a fine ear for a cover version but they have tended to be the most anaemic selections on albums by recent incarnations.

That would work with mando and fiddle, though they may need a female vocalist to really get the subtle nuances into the lyrics.  A version of Neil Young's Piece of **** would be good! |

I love the original as well...how can one not love Leonard Cohen? I just like the little extra kick of Fairport's version. |
