Today on 1968: Day by Day, on Radio 4, while playing news reports covering the sad demise of Tony Hancock, they played End of a Holiday. Still works after all this time Mr Nicol, excellent, definitely far superior to Sabbaths "Fluff" in my book.

Perhaps, but "Laguna Sunrise" comes awfully close, IMHO!

Didn't he play a bit of it as part of the Hiring Fair medley thingy he did with Ric? Or am I drunk again. I'm sure he played a couple of bars of it.

Didn't it get played as part of the introduction to Matty Groves? Or was I imagining that?

Simon did a rather fine new recording of it in 1989 for the "Mastercraftsmen" Album.

I don't think it's still available. It was on the Nico Polo label. Various artists with the common link that they were all playing instruments made by Rob Armstrong. Track List

1. Armstrong's Almain (Martin Allcock, Simon Nicle, Dave Pegg, Ric Sanders)
2. Goin' Back (Vikki Clayton)
3. The Last Magician (Pete Laity)
4. Showtime Baby (Martin Jenkins)
5. Downsteps (Gordon Giltrap)
6. I Know My Love (Kevin Dempsey & Chris Leslie)
7. After the Hop/Cambridge Dawn/Carnival (Phil Beer)
8. End of a Holiday (Simon Nicol)
9. The Parting (Bert Jansch & Pette Kirtley)
10. Rooftop Rhapsody (Martin Jenkins)
11. Frank Depsey's Lament/You Can Let Go Now (Kevin Dempsey & Chris Leslie)
12. Spring Dance (Gordon Giltrap)
13. Carrick Roads (Phil Beer)
14. Our Sip is Sailing (Martin Allcock & Dave Mattacks)

All in all an excellent album. Of particular interest is the last track, Our Sip is Sailing. This had words added by Chris Leslie to become Lalla Rookh on "Old, New, Borrowed, Blue"

Now that really sounds like my kinda sampler, can't imagine why I never found it before! Thanks for the suggestion, pity it wasn't made when there were still copies to be found!!  Sad

Not a sampler, all the tracks were recorded specially for the album.

I don't know what happened to the Nico Polo label, but they also released Ric's first solo album, and the One to One album with Ric and Gordon Giltrap. It was run by Mark Ringwood as a subsidiary of Marco Polo. The web domain appears to be no longer live. It would be interesting to know who owns the rights now and whether there's any prospect of a re-release.

Sorry, of course not an actual 'sampler', more of a compilation, but it would have sat in my 'Serendipity' section of CDs.
- now there's an interesting topic...

Was it ever a CD? I've got it on cassette.
