Hi everyone, I posted elsewhere but Jude kindly directed me to the welcome topic so my name is Barry and I thought this would be a nice place to hang out and maybe even offer  a few tips for recording etc. (I am sure there are plenty of you in the know already, I won't tread on any toes!)

Well my background is working in audio as an engineer in a large radio production company. When I voluntarily left I was head of engineering at a large independent radio production company in London and went freelance. I was working on BBC and commercial radio programming and as well as mixing programmes for broadcast (such as Jazz on 3 / Gardeners Question Time /  Charles Hazelwood / Soul Solutions) I was pushing on in the forgotten art of "straight to stereo recording". I had the great fortune of working with many talented and friendly musicians and recording 100's of acoustic sessions, from jazz, folk, rock, soul and anything in between.

These days I am concentrating on mastering audio and have a small but well equipped online mastering facility which is priced to suit independent musicians and artists. (although I work for some record labels too)

I hope to be able to contribute some decent information if any technical topics come up.

I dare say I will run into you on the forums some time, I think a mugshot with be forthcoming soon.

I must admit I'm not familiar with those events.

4.   What kind of music do you like?

Almost everything. Mainly folk, classical, metal, jazz, rock and all its subgenres, ambient, experimental, etc... I dislike hip-hop, rap, and that kind of sound. You know

5.   What was the last gig/festival/recital/concert that you attended?  What was it like?

Well, it was a Metal concert. It was O.K.

6.   What was the last CD that you bought?  Would you recommend it?

I buy all sorts of cd's. It depends on your tastes. I don't recall if my last purchase was a metal album, or a Bach one!

Hello everyone,

I recently joined the forum and was greeted by Jude and directed to the Welcome Mat to make my introduction. So here I am ...

My name’s Peter and I live near Bedford.

I found Talkawhile when I was trying to find out a little more about the upcoming folk festival at Butlins in Skegness. There was little information around about this unlikely (but, on the face of it, good value) event. However a discussion thread filled in some gaps and someone was first to mention The Unthanks would be playing ... and that was enough for us to book up. It seems there will be quite a few from TAW also there! I’ve also enjoyed browsing the forum and hearing about several other things of interest.

I listened to Fairport Convention in my younger days along with a wide selection of other music but I wouldn’t say I was an expert on their music. I know of Cropredy but have never been.

Currently my main musical interests are folk. There are so many established artists doing exciting new things (thinking here of The Imagined Village for example) and lots of younger artists coming on to the scene. The regular touring by many of the interesting acts has ensured that my passion for live music has had a resurgence in the last year or two. Having said that I am partial to jazz, have maintained my interest in King Crimson and I went to see The Streets (and enjoyed it!) a couple of years. I was interested to see the post about Van der Graaf Generator touring next year which led me to dig into my archives and add that to the “possible gigs” list for 2011. The five “must sees” for me at moment (all of whom I have seen several times this year) are The Imagined Village, Chris Wood, Megson, Lau and Eliza Carthy but could easily add a lot more to that ... like, er, Andy Cutting, Emily Smith ...

The last gig was Demon Barber Roadshow in Milton Keynes. A wonderful live act and full of energy. And tomorrow it’s similar (but different!) with Bellowhead in Cambridge. Been looking forward to this one for a while!

The last CD I bought (I think!) was Hedonism by Bellowhead which I really enjoy. Other recommended recent purchases include Heidi Talbot’s The Last Star (saw her in Cambridge with John McCusker and Boo Hewerdine – fantastic evening) and Hannah James & Sam Sweeney’s Catches and Glees. My favourite bought in last year (missed it when it was released and performed live) is John McCusker’s Under One Sky.

OK, I’m sorry not to answer the final question as there is no question of me ever singing in public (although I have been known to mime in folk clubs if I feel too out of place!   ) ... well, ok, Robert Plant singing Stairway to Heaven.  

Well, I think that’s quite enough from me for now. It seems you all have a love of good music and many of you have (rather worryingly perhaps!) a similar sense of humour to my own! I look forward to meeting you all around the forum and perhaps at a gig or festival in due course.

I wonder if there is anyone else I know on here as well.
I am from East London and have been a follower of Folk and mostly every type of
music for as long as I can remember, what is life worth without music anyway I say!
I have to admit that I haven't been to Croperdy for a few years now, I must say that
its a great friendly Festival as you will all know anyway.
I hope to meet some of you sometime and hopefully make new friends at the same time.
Are there any Tim Grimm and Cam Penner fans on here?

The Promise by Bruce Springsteen. Quality Music IMHO.
