January is my least favourite month of the year. It's all a bit of a let-down after the festivities of the previous one. So what better time to have two much anticipated Cd's drop onto my doormat. I couldn't decide which one to play first: the one from last year's Cropredy - fabulous performances which are still fairly fresh in my memory but which I longed to hear again ... or the unknown one which I feared might not live up to expectation. In the end I plumped for the unknown and need not have worried. I'm not sure how I managed to miss all this Excalibur stuff but it is brilliant! My excuse is that I only discovered Fairport in 1998 and have spent the last ten years catching up on the back catalogue. Of course I am familiar with Castle Rock but the rest are completely new to me. (There are a few phrases that I recognise  ) The obvious thing to do now is to explore the five Alan Simon albums from which these tracks have been taken. And then there's the whole Pentangle/Jacqui McShee thing – wow, what a great voice! I only ever heard her once at one of the Cropredy warm-ups and am rather ashamed to admit that I didn't pay much attention then. And then there's ... Do you ever feel that there is too much good music in the world and that there's never going to be enough time to listen to it all? |

I haven't got this yet so I'm intrigued. 5 albums? There is Excalibur, Le Concert Mythique, Excalibur II and the as yet unreleased Anne De Bretagne. What is the 5th album? |

Well the Cd notes mention: Excalibur le Legende des Celtes (1998) Excalibur le Concere Mythique (1999) Gaia (2003) Excalibur II - the Celtic Ring (2007) Anne de Bretagne (2008) And there is going to be Excalibur III I might have got it all wrong  - it's completely new to me and I'm feeling a bit confused and to be honest in a bit of a fluster because it is all so good!  |

There is only one track on F&G from Gaia - Danza del Crepusculo (Dance of Twilight) - composed by Ric Sanders. Gaia is a concept album about saving the planet. For those who would like to hear more Fairport electric, this is the one for you, unless you already have the Excalibur albums of course. Excalibur II seems to be the only one currently available – just ordered it from Amazon - so it looks like I might have missed the boat I'm wondering if this year's winter tour will be the Fame and Glory tour or whether there will be a mini-set: Simon to sing the title track (and a few others hopefully  ), Chris to sing The Soldier, Ric to play Danza del Crepusculo and I can definitely hear Peggy singing Marie le Cordeliere  |

I've listened to the clips on the web site, and intend to buy a copy in Basingstoke in only just over two weeks now What I was wondering is: will we ever have a chance to see this whole thing live? To quote the site: "This huge project is truly impressive when fully staged - there were over 100 musicians on the stage in Paris when last performed." And: "We hope you'll be pleasantly surprised to hear us playing some less-than-familiar songs with some unexpected colleagues (including the Prague Symphony Orchestra)". How cool would it be to see that? Are there any current plans to stage it again, in Paris or elsewhere? * Starts counting Tesco tokens, to see if enough for Eurostar tickets* |

Some of the tracks on F&G wouldn't require as many as 100 musicians but there could be 7 with Ken Nicol and Phil Cool As to seeing the whole thing live ... I live in hope |

I don't think the first album was ever released in the UK but it has recently been re-released in France in a double set with the DVD of the live show (of which Le Concert Mythique is the soundtrack). As for seeing it live, there are plans to stage Anne De Bretagne in Brittany later this year but nothing confirmed yet. |

We watched Le Concert Mythique. The chaps and everyone else, including the audience looked like they were having great fun. There were high kicks from DP while playing the bass - very impressive! And Gerry ... centre front stage - marvellous! We're still trying to work out Simon's character - was it Arthur or Lancelot?

I wouldn't bet on it: no-one seems to know much about these concerts and recordings I'm even beginning to believe my own typo in an earlier post ...
