Haven't got my album to hand....surely Simon didn't really play mondolin, violin and autoharp on Solid Air, as it currently says on wiki?  Did he?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid_Air

So what did he play, and on what?

Allmusic shows the same credit listing ... RT on violin and autoharp ... ?  Shocked That's as surprising as SN on those instruments!

According to CD Universe:
Personnel: John Martyn (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, synthesizer); Richard Thompson (mandolin); Simon Nicol (autoharp); Sue Dranheim (violin); Tony Coe (saxophone); John "Rabbit" Bundrick (acoustic & electric piano, organ, clavinet); Tristan Fry (vibraphone); Danny Thompson (acoustic bass); Dave Pegg (bass); Dave Mattacks (drums); Neemoi "Speedy" Acquaye (congas).

This makes more sense ...

Somewhere in the back of my mind I seem to recall that Simon was the first violin-player in FC.

I left the stereo autoharp behind when I left Fairport, and it was obviously played by Richard and Simon when they thought it would fit.

I believe it was destroyed in the crash.. Sad

I always liked the attribution on Full House:

"SIMON NICOL: Vocals, Electric, Acoustic, & Bass Guitars, Dulcimer. (Look out Steve Stills)."

The sleeve notes of Solid Air say:

"Mandolin, Autoharp and Violin on Over the Hill - Richard Thompson, Simon Nicol and Sue Draheim respectively"

Therefore, Simon played autoharp on Over the Hill and nothing else.  Peggy on the other hand shared bass duties with Danny T throughout Grin

So, Jude, it must be at least an outside chance that Simon was using your autoharp on Over the Hill - I think we should be told, Simon Smiley

Well we will call it Fairport's autoharp as it was loaned to the band, but probably the same one that I used to play.. Cheesy

I don't think it could have been the same autoharp. Solid Air was released in '73 and wasn't the harp that Jude played destroyed in the fateful road accident? Cry

Cheers

This is half off topic - no Solid Air, but stringed things on other artists' albums.

There's a song I love on Iain Matthews first album (Matthews Southern Comfort) - "Once Upon  a Lifetime" -there is definitely what sounds to my untrained ear like a harp, but no mention of anyone playing anything harp-like in the credits. (Credits include Gerry, Ashley, Simon and Richard amongst others)
Anyone able to solve the mystery?

Not destroyed, just a bit battered and bent (not unlike your correspondent.) It still was playable in the main and I wish I could remember enough about the sessions to recall what happened so I could clear it up. I can't find my copy of the album. If someone wants to send me an Mp3 of the track it might bring something back...
