Extraordinary drumming for sure, but there was so much more, of course.
That's the real sad part. Even with Sandy's untimely death, she was here long enough to give us some insights about her. By contrast, Martin is but an enigma - very little stuff to go by. Not enough tales to formulate an impression of sorts.
For most of us, he can only remain the little drummer boy in the leaves.

I remember when we were first working on 'Suzanne' (yes it was part of the repertoire in the first incarnation) and how the hairs stood up on the back of my neck when Martin came up with that bit of drumming.. still gives me the shivers... as does the drumming on 'Violets of Dawn'  |

Particularly the pre Swarb version of Sailor released on Watching the Dark. The drums own it brilliantly - no question!

Jules I'm glad you said that Jules. I hadn't said anything because I did not want to appear disrespectful. Not to diminish Martin's drumming in any way but I love DM. The circumstances of his joining the band were sad but he brought a real power and excitement to Fairport's sound, particularly on the run of albums from House Full through Babbacombe Lee. |

DM is one of the top ten rock/folk/jazz drummers of the past thirty years. An absolute star and a fine chap into the bargain. No doubt about it. I love his drumming.
Gerry C is another terrifically powerful inventive and tight drummer... I still think his best work was with Fotheringay but he remains a great drummer.
This ain't a competition. Just a feeling about Martin's sad passing, his fantastic ability already at such a young age and an appreciation of his work.
