If his description is accurate, then it's almost unheard of to find a 40 year lp in that condition...hence the (somewhat ridiculous!) price. I've seen more than one variant described as 'first pressing', mind... |

One has to wonder how somebody has the foresight to buy and keep records in such excellent condition for so long. Perhaps a shop's stock? Good luck to him anyway.
If only I'd looked after me teeth records!

I'm in total agreement, why on earth would you buy it, play it once and then keep it for 40 years?
Unless of course it was bought, played, recognised as what it was going to be so that he went out and bought another copy which he played to death. - In which case ---- RESPECT!

Alot of the collections that he buys for resale were bought from collectors who recorded the lp's to tape and put them away.

Yowsa! I've heard "I'm Confused" from Live Yardbirds - Keith Relf was no Robert Plant, my friends.
In the '70s and '80s, I would transfer my vinyl to cassette, so most of my records were played only once. I also put my albums in plastic outer bags and replaced the paper inner sleeves with anti-static sleeves.
None of my records are worth a dime, of course, but they're still in great shape!

You can't exactly, unless you bought it from new - but there are clues, no spindle trails, and no scuffs from inner sleeve removal under strong light. A small % of fans bought albums and copied them to tape to listen to, and in most collections, there are rogue items, I once bought a collection of easy listening cack, for the near perfect copy of 'Art Gallery' which the woman had been given as gift, played once, and hated. This stuff takes some finding though, thats for sure.

Here's a thought.
Why should an immaculate first pressing be worth so much more than one which has been played and looked after?
A little 'patina' adds some charachter and living history to a thing.
Any road up, I wouldn't be paying that much for a record. Or a holiday, come to think......

Just to join the rest of you in sounding like that bloke in "High Fidelity"....
My gatefold sleeve copy was bought on 21st Dec 1969. It looks a bit weary (like me), also I devalued it by neatly writing the purchase date and "Drawings by Bob Pegg" on the inside. Ashley Hutchings forgot to credit Bob at the time and I was incensed because I was at school with Bob.
The poor old thing has survived Dansettes, Garrard SP25s, Sinclair amps going bang, cartridges held on with baler twine, and an attack of Silly Putty via the kids. It's had a large scratch on "Toss the Feathers Medley" since about 1971, inflicted during one of our parties round the corner from Portobello Road.
I've also got the later non gatefold version, the first cd version, and the fancy later one. But I love the old original and it'll go over my dead body! And I'm not going yet.
