Nice job Ian. Can't help but feel it for Vinnie Welnick who was a very sweet man, who made the decision a couple years ago to deal with the sometimes overwhelming pain of life by taking a knife to his own throat. Oddly I suppose, though he had known Jerry for a much shorter period, he had the most difficulty dealing with his demise. For me and thousands after that coma Jerry had in 86, it was more a matter of when, I recall Brent Mydland's passing 5 years earlier as much more shocking. Will always be pleased that apparently Jerry left this world with a smile on his face, like the song Brokedown Palace says, "I love you more than words can tell."

Vince Welnick killed himself? What a tragedy.
I've been listening to NRPS, and can't help hearing 'American Beauty' gestating in there. Dave Torbert sounds like the rock version of Phil, great bass player.

Didn't expect to see The Dead come up over here. Just joined today. They've long been my favorite band, caught 'em 81 times between April 17, 1987 and May 21, 1995, even on an off-night they were still the best band on the planet. The vault releases have been wonderful. I was a longtime DAT trader but gave it all up once CD-Rs became available and quality instantly dropped. Realized I'd never have the time to listen to over 2000 Dead shows and sold off my collection, they've kept me plenty satisfied over the years with the vault releases, could go for a bit more acknowledgement of the 80s and 90s but I don't complain!

Good news for the 80's Heads.... This was posted on S7 (an online GD forum): -----Original Message----- Subject: [S7] New vault releases These look good. The listening party samples are a real tease http://www.dead.net/listeningparty-v3n4#http://www.dead.net/listeningparty-warlocks#Grateful Dead Archival Releases - Formerly The Warlocks & Road Trips Vol. 3 No. 4 < http://www.glidemagazine.com/hiddentrack/grateful-dead-archival-releases-formerly-the-warlocks-road-trips-vol-3-no-4/> The Grateful Dead's vault must have a gash because two big releases on are on the horizon. Road Trips Vol. 3 No. 4< http://www.dead.net/road-trips/road-trips-vol-3-no-4>features highlights from May 6 and May 7, 1980 while Formerly The Warlocks< http://www.dead.net/features/release-info/our-first-80s-box-complete-1989-hampton-warlocks-shows-6-cds>contains the complete Hampton '89 shows over six discs. The latest Road Trips release focuses on an interesting period in the band's history. Newcomer Brent Mydland was injecting new life into songs and becoming more comfortable with each passing show. This pair of shows - played at Penn State's Recreation Hall and Cornell's Barton Hall - focuses heavily on material from the recently released Go To Heaven and also includes a number of stellar jams including a blazing China > Rider and a top-notch Cassidy. There's also good versions of the Lost Sailor > Saint of Circumstance and Lazy Lightning > Supplication pairings. Formerly The Warlocks contains every note played at the band's legendary run of the same name at the Hampton Coliseum on October 8 and 9, 1989. This marks the group's first box-set release focusing on material from the '80s. There are plenty of highlights on these shows - of which high-quality recordings have circulated for years - including bust outs of Dark Star, Help On The Way > Slipknot! and Attics of My Life. Both sets are available for purchase now with Formerly The Warlocks running $69.99 and Road Trips setting you back $23.98.

Thanks David, faster than Deadnet! But hark. What's that? It's the sound of p*** being taken. With p&p, over one hundred American dollars for 9 discs? The Road Trips I can live with, even without bonus discs, but those shysters at Rhino are certainly ratcheting up the price, with 6 discs & a bunch of tacky "souvenirs" for $70. C'mon.

This is rather lovely. (Incidentally, the Yonder Mountain String Band would be great for Cropredy). The Yonders doing Franklin with Bill and Mickey on board.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVkglGFSDEs

Thought maybe somebody here might like this, figured this was the right thread - my band, who plays out maybe once every 2 years or so, whether we want to or not, covering "Scarlet Begonias", with our usual reggae-ish treatment of things (at least before the jam section): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1_KBB7R_OQ

Does anybody know if the 'Closing of Winterland' dvd set was ever available in the UK format? Thanks. Checked packaging & can find no indication that it is region specific. Plays OK on my undoctored & ancient steam driven DVD, so assume it is readable in all areas.

Sorry, I've reached the outer limits of my competence on this. I've checked my copy again, but cannot find any reference to it being exclusively NSTC format, although it is a US release. I'm sure someone around here can offer sound advice.

Assuming they're not vegetarians.

Does anybody know if the 'Closing of Winterland' dvd set was ever available in the UK format? Thanks. I think it must be multi region Ian. My dvd player is about 8 years old, and it plays superbly on mine too. You'll love it incidentally.
