A most enjoyable evening had by all..attendance was good (about 50 - 10 or more higher than was needed to make things pay for themselves so everyone was happy). I particularly enjoyed the reaction of the confused regulars in the pub. One was asking about who the band was and why everyone was wearing those colourful t-shirts?  If anyone is in France in June...they might be interested in this event....it's another rather special gig by Deadicace, another excellent Dead covers band. When they played at SOL a couple of years ago, Barry Melton sat in with them. The band's Bill Giles writes: Tuesday 21 June 2011 - Fete de la Musique. 1945 - 2100
Place de la Mairie, Auvers sur Oise (30km north west of Paris)
Hey, we're playing on the Solstice as part of the Fete de la Musique at
Auvers sur Oise. (All French towns celebrate the Fete de la Musique -
you can play in the street, plug into a lampost .... but this is the
event organised by the town hall.) As you'll probably know, the Dead
had been scheduled to play at the Auvers festival on the weekend of
19/20 June 1971 but the whole event was rained out (Jean-Michel can
testify). Staying at the nearby (5km) Chateau d'Herouville which housed
a recording studio, the band played in front of the Chateau to an
audience mainly from the village on the 21st. This will be the 40th
anniversary of that impromptu concert.

I don't think it's bad or anything - but a Dead album without some shorter melodic songs isn't going to be one of my faves.

I can understand your thinking. At that moment in time - being unaware of what delights were to follow in later years - it WAS the pinnacle. I was quite disappointed at the time Aoxomoxoa was released, mainly because it contained too many songs, and not enough solos. I've since changed my mind on that album, of course. It was a similar thing with Quicksilver. When Shady Grove was released, I could have cried. Unfortunately, unlike the Dead, poor old Quicksilver never released anything to surpass Happy Trails. |

I'm wondering what the bonus disc is all the same, with a eye to maybe grabbing one on eBay. If anyone finds out what the bonus is, please let me know. Answering my own question, here's the lowdown on the subscription-only bonus disc:- Recorded live at Cleveland Public Auditorium, Cleveland, OH (December 6, 1973) All selections are previously unissued recordings Track listing: 1. Greatest Story Ever Told (5:42) 2. China Cat Sunflower > (9:18) 3. I Know You Rider (5:31) 4. Dark Star > (43:33) 5. Eyes of the World (14:03) Look at the length of that Dark>Eyes pairing! Jeez! Don't get into Dick's Picks until you get some other live albums would be my advice. DPs are wart and all, complete concerts, and vary a lot, though the good ones are very good indeed.
Good Studio: Mars Hotel, American Beauty, Workingman's Dead, Wake of the Flood.

Jules No, I can live without that one- I don't even know if i'd live long enough to hear it in its entirety, especiall the way i keep CDs - 2,3,4, 5 year old unplayed discs on my shelves. |
