Not come across the National before. Any recommendations for an entry point?

Alligator was their first 'big' album...2004/5 I think without looking... Not heard anything of theirs I really dislike, and that gives a fairly representative idea of their 'sound'...

Yes great lyricist/poet, and a very understanding and forgiving man by all accounts.   He wasn't, apparently, always too impressed with some of Weir's tunes written to accompany his work.

I'm not always impressed with them either!  

If Hunter/Garcia had, say, a 75% success rate, then I'd put Barlow/Weir at around about 40%.

Of course, the best Barlow/Weir songs are right up there with the Dead's best.  But there is certainly some dreck as well.

New Dave's Picks on its way. The whole of 22/10/71 Chicago on two discs & a selection from previous night on a third, including a very rare, if usually dispensable,"Frozen Logger", think FC's "Yellow Bird".  Keith Godchaux's 2nd & 3rd gigs. After the disappointing DP2, according to reviews of this tour, this release should be a welcome return to form.

Yeah Ian, Logger Song a bit of a throw away, certainly the weirdest one I recall was when it popped out for the first time since about 71 (could easily be wrong about that nugget, strictly on memory)during the Red Rocks run in 85 with Mickey introducing one or some of his percussion exotica instruments, sounded kinda like a musical saw, into the arrangement, while sound guy Dan Healy worked his strange magic on Weir's voice, probably worked well on that percentage of the crowd that was well baked. Seemed to be completely unplanned, maybe before one or some of the others wandered out onto the stage, cannot recall their ever having come out together. In fact that was always sort of a pre show ritual to see who could first be spotted wandering around backstage, would amp up the expectation level in the crowd.
On memory again I think that new release was from the Auditorium Theater in Chicago, sound and construction wise, one of the finest in the world.

We Quodlibets were upset as we had tickets for the Madison Square Gardens run in September. Still, I suppose it was worse from his perspective.

Sigh, I know what you mean.  I'm tempted, but I remember a few years ago thinking that I had enough 1990 Dead.  That being said, I think I will be picking up the two CD sampler.  I think that's a good compromise.  

I do like the box sets they've been putting out.  I mean, I like the idea of putting out runs of shows.

At last, despite the best efforts of Parcelfarce to delay delivery indefinitely, the Spring '90 box has arrived.

The packaging is more robust than the Europe '72 trunk & is stuffed with pretty irrelevances that could have improved the cover price dramatically by their exclusion.
More importantly, the recordings & performances are both superb. Crystal clear sound with well balanced mixes. The whole band seems to be up for a good time. There's no hint of the ennui of many late '80s shows & the Brent / Jerry interplay is often quite stunning. Sad that this was Brent's last tour before his untimely demise, but despite the bloated & extravagant presentation this box is a nice addition to his legacy.

Quite a number of Deadheads of my acquaintance hold later Dead performances in low esteem, but in my opinion, a lot of this material stands up well against "classic" periods; different indeed, but just as engaging & rewarding.

It would be nice to have a set of the Autumn European tour with Hornsby & Welnick, especially the superb Paris 27/10/90, but I expect it'll be a long time before they revisit this period.
