Just happened on this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jge4mjWfpVw&feature=related

DM's only venture with XTC (my other favorite band).  One of the great matchups, in my opinion - they should have done more together than just that one LP.

He obviously was not just a hired hand, by the looks of this video.

LOL!!!  I love watching footage of bands rehearsing and playing in the studio.  I'm so bloody anal... I mean I've played all of the Pet Sounds box set you know...repeatedly.  Yep, I've got it that bad...

I'm almost as bad but not quite.  I was uttery transfixed by Let It Be when I first saw it as a kid, and anytime I've been in a band since I've always wanted to make an in-the-studio film.  Never have though.  Truth of the matter is that most of the time spent in the studio is utterly tedious.  It's all down to the editing - you'd probably get 20 minutes of decent footage from one day.

The other one I remember well from being young(ish) was the Rockpile made for TV one - Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds working on the albums Labour Of Lust and Repeat When Necessary, both of which I bought on the strength of that film.  And both remain favourites of mine.  I managed to track down a copy of that film on DVD, but alas it has a big glitch half way through it which means you have to miss out a fair sized chunk.  Still, great to see (most of) it again after all these years.

DM reading the tour dates for Mary Chapin Carpenter and hurrying up the workshy popsters
he probably had a Paul McCartney session booked for that evening Roll Eyes

I completely disagree!  I think it's actually one of their best, though I admit you can't really tell that here.

Cheers for this. It's reminded me that XTC are still perhaps the most underrated band ever...

Fascinating ! Love this band Smiley

I guess it's not too likely, but I do hope XTC reunite and go back in the studio again !

There's a nice little ditty in the biography "Chalkhills And Children".

Dave (XTC) Gregory's brother Ian was a big Fairport Convention fan, and had gone to see the band at the Oxford New Theatre (Apollo in those days!) In the 1991 tour programme Dave Mattocks had listed a few bands and artists he'd most like to work with, and hadn't already. Sandwiched between Ry Cooder and Randy Newman were XTC. Ian took this back to Swindon to show the band.

Days later the Fairport tour reached the Wyvern Theatre Swindon. DM arrived to find a message taped to his drum stool asking him to call Andy Partridge. "I thought it was the crew winding me up" Dave laughs, "because they knew XTC were a Swindon based band".

Lovely innocent days before Email and mobile phones took over the world !   Undecided

All on his own here, reminds me of cropredy sound checks in the 90's.

Brilliant.  And even more interesting because Ian Gregory was XTC's drummer for their Dukes Of Stratosphear side-project...

So has DM ever played with Ry Cooder?  I think I have all of Cooder's albums and don't remember that.

I'm pretty certain he's not played on any Ry Cooder recordings. I think at the time of writing (1991) DM was just listing artists he would like to work with in the future. Smiley
